Strength:
Very transparent with the speed and bass of quality solid state, and the air and body of tubes. Dynamics are terrific. Awesome presentation of music. Dealing with Keith Herron is also a major strength.
Weakness:
Not quite as much air at the top end as with the very best preamps (Audio Research Reference II) and not quite as detailed as the Lamm L2. Then again, these preamps are costing 3 - 4 X the cost. The Herron preamp is rather plain looking and is limited to linestage only. The machine work is top notch quality throughout, and the feel of quality is evident. The Herron pre produces a very natural sound, with low lows and high highs without the traditional tube pre rolling off of the highs and overly bloom to the bass. I liken the Herron to the CAT pre in that it does not sound like a tube preamp or a solid state preamp - it sounds like music should sound. Smooth when the music is smooth, hard and edgy when the music is hard and edgy. Similar Products Used: VTL 5.5, Audio Research Reference II, Joule Mk III, Bryston BP25 and Lamm L2. |
