Overall I would have to say that the Hafler is a very interesting piece of equipment. The main reason this preamp is worth the money to me is because
not only is it an excelent preamp, it is also an extrodinary tuner as some
of you may well know it is difficult to find a high end preamp that includes a
tuner but for some of you the search may be over. Flaws: Tone controll-
seems to over compensate if you are operating decent speakers then I would
recomend leaving this preamp on bypass.

I used to use a 915 with both 9300 and 9500 power amps and have now upgraded to a Audio Research LS7. Compared to the LS7, which I really like for its dynamics and clarity, the 915 is a little coloured. Basically, the sound is very transparent but the transparency is a result of colouration making it sound over-airy for most recordings.
Still, not bad for the current price. Oh, it takes a few minutes to warm up properly.

A couple months ago I set out to replace my aging Hafler SE-100 preamp. When I originally purchased my Hafler 9270 amp (1992) I couldn't afford the 915 preamp as well. So, the salesman made me a package deal on the SE-100 and 9270. When I aquired the 915 recently I could barely live with it in my system. Not that it was worse than the SE-100 because it was definitely a big improvement. The problem was that I recently upgraded the 9270 with a 9505, bought new speakers and a new front end. The 915 is dull sounding, very flat and uninvolving. It doesn't sound musical! Two weeks after buying the 915 I yanked it from my system and replaced it with a Melos SHA-Gold Reference. HUGE improvement! Now the 9505 is being replaced too!! Hafler, it's time to go back to the drawing board.

$299.99 is a little bit too cheap for this preamplefier, don't you think?
You can buy preamp that give you many options but you won't have real music.
I'm not saying that you will get real thing from this preamp. Get real.
This is $299.99. If this preamp can give you just a volume control, you should be satisfy.
Anyway, you should give it a listen (a must listen) and you will amaze how good this $299.99 performed.

p.s. I should give it ***** but nobody perfect..!!

This unit sounds transparent, just like it's not there, and that is a good way for equipment to sound.
