Strength:

Better than a receiver?

Weakness:

Featureless. No balanced outputs. Stupid contour switch in the signal path. Tone controls are another pointless feature - always in the signal path. Poor FM quality...Poor volume control with inaccurate balancing at low level listening.

Very disappointed for the price and what I'd expect from Adcom.

Well Adcom has produced another dull sounding preamplifier that does no justice to the MUSIC. The 450 has good FM reception a great build quality and an assortment of line-level inputs, no phono pre-amp. The sound is not very good it has a dull treble presentation and boomy bass. It dosen't sound any better than a good japanese A/V receiver. But it is very very inexpensive.Thas IS the ONLY thing this preamplifier has going for it.

Nice unit. No problems whatever. Am using with an Adcom GFA 535 II, and a pair of Paradigm Studio/20's. The 450 seems completely transparent. FM is quite sensitive for distant stations. My only wish is that it had a mono/stereo switch.

Been using the GTP-450 since 95 or 96 (memory failing me, ears are not) I have no complaints with the sound quality. It is built very solid and has simple clean lines that I prefer.
I am now at the cross roads in my audio system where I am ready to add on DVD and AC-3 and I am afraid the GTP-450 may have to be disposed of. I haven't done enough research to determine if I can add on a good AC-3 signal processor and run the center/rear/low freq channels and still keep the 450 ? If any of you have any suggestions please email because I truly like my 450.

I've owned this unit for over a year. I haven't had any problems and it sounds quite good. Hooked up to my Infinity Quantums 5s it sounds fine, the bass is deep and controlled, the treble is crystal clear. No phono input. Tuner is also fine, all the stations I want come in nice and clear.

I've owned this unit for about a year now and find it to be a nice unit for the money. I've matched it with an Adcom GFA5400 amp and a set of Definitive bp10b loudspeakers. The GTP-450 is very transparent during playback of all types of music. I matched a NAD phono preamp in the AUX input and found that combination to be very "pleasant" to say the least. Remote control works well from anywhere in my listening room. The tuner works well, picking up the farthest stations with the aid of a $20.00 aluminum antenna purchased from a local electronics store mounted in my attic and connected with coaxial cable.
This is a preamp that will compete with ones costing 3 times as much!!!

I hava had the GTP-450 for a while now. I love the way it sounds. I think the tuner section is excellent. Although I don't have great speakers or cd-player (yamaha cd and klh speakers) I can tell the difference between this and my yamaha rxv-992 (which I thought sounded great when I got it.) I intend to purchase a pair of mission 774's and a denon dcd-1650. I will re-review the gtp-450 then and tell if I still like it

I have the GTP 450 as the front end for an Acurus A150 and a pair of Magnapan 1.5's. The GTP 450 is clearly the weak link. I wish I had the money to replace it. While it does an acceptable job, I get some bleed from the tuner if the tuner is set to a station while I listen to CD's. I have to tune the receiver portion of the pre amp to a portion of the band where there is no station while I am listening to CD's. In my opinion the receiver should be designed to not operate unless you are using it, and even if it does, it should not bleed through. Try another brand, or spend more and get the 550.
