Strength:

MUSICALITY, VERSATILITY, POWER, RELIABILITY

Weakness:

None that come to mind: extremely competitive in its price range

A major upgrade from my Yamaha receiver: better phono stage; more versatility, & definitely more musical. After reseaching a good number of British designed/made amps, I could not find one that offered both MM & MC phono stages; 3 complete tape decks; 2 sets of loudspeaker connections, and more than 50 watts a side, at such an affordable price. Any component that I have used with this amp has benefitted from its good clean neutral sounding power.
Though I have not used either the pre-amp out & power amp in facilities it was good to know that Audiolab had included them.
I never had noise problems using my Rega Planar 3 turntable; just very impressive results.
The appearance is very simple but its simplicity means its appearance doesn't really date. The front and the back panels have a lot going on, without being cluttered.
A real bargain, along with the venerable Regas!

Strength:

Amazing sound - 8000A model integrated.

Weakness:

Poor preamp stages, some low level buzz and hiss.

I design electronics and this design of amplifier is one of the best I've ever come across, dating from 1985. I have rebuilt it with better components than were available in 1985. It shall pass into history as a classic - better than the modern day Tag McLaren equivalents. You'll need $800 to get something close to this, but nothing so transparent without paying more. Always buy a service manual before favourite kit gets obsoleted.......
