Strength:

Solid build, musical bass and a ton of headroom.

Weakness:

Set the dogs off when this thing goes(not joking!) and fears about the relays though I'm not having trouble with them.

Very musical. Excellent bass and a lots of power. I am currently using it to power my home brewed subwoofer box with a Didital Designs I think 4500 12" subwoofer I bought a few years ago. It will out perform any other amps I owned and smashed about any amps in the store I listened to.

Strength:

Power by the bucket load but with ample control and able to be subtle when needed. Very airy/detailed sound when combined with the Illusion cables. No onboard active cooling, so quiet as a mouse. Can be switched to mono if you change career and want to host a rave in your back garden!

Weakness:

None so far, it even keeps the house warm. May need to update this when I get my next electricity bill.

Following having the idea to add to my previous integrated amp by plugging in a Power amp and using the 3130's pre section, I searched through the NAD archive pages to find a power amp from the same era. The idea being that I liked the sound of the integrated amp and wanted to build on that. I decided on the 2200 and then set off in search of some reviews and ended up here. From the majority of positive reviews I was confident enough to set about tracking one of these down. I eventually found one for sale, but it was being advertised with a channel out and was also being sold with its matching 1155 pre amp. Once purchased and repaired I pressed it into service and after switching around a few items such as interconnect I am now in HiFi Heaven. I opted for the Black Rhodium Illusion solid core silver plated interconnects with Eichmann Bullets and can strongly recommend these with the amp and also use them in the connection to my VRDS-7 DT-1 Teac CD/Dac Combo. The results were fantastic. I have read so many articles written by people who claim to have re-discovered their CD collection post a major upgrade and now know exactly what they are talking about. For the first time I am finding out which of my CD collection has really good production and which leave a little to be desired. My Rega P2 has been given a new lease of life as has my Vinyl collection. I am now thinking about some upgrades to the RB250 arm including rewiring etc which I have read can elevate it to another level and also a new cartridge to take advantage of the Moving Coil Phono Stage in the 1155 Pre Amp. It seems like you start off planning to buy one item and it doesn't stop until you have run out of things to replace. Thank god for boys toys!

Solid performer. Ample headroom

Weakness:

Heavy and large

I bought this amp new in 1986. I have bought other amps since and always go back to it. It sounds great. Very solid piece of machinery. I had some work done on it recently and it sounds better than ever.

Strength:

Enough power to go deaf permanently. Loud, strong, distortion free. Amazingly cheap on the used market, $300 or less. (2 went for $225 and $250 a week after I bought mine on ebay) Definite upgrade from a typical rack/retail outlet system. Makes entry level surround sound look downright silly. Very impressive sounding showpiece. Great for classic rock listening. Sounds superb even with cheap speakers.

Weakness:

None other than must buy a good pre-amp now. It's also a bit large, on the heavy side, and gets a little warm. No biggie.

Bought this NAD on a recommendation from someone who had one. Turned out to be very good advice, fits my audio needs perfectly. Was looking for more power on a budget, my 110 watt integrated amp started sounding a bit underpowered after 17 years. This NAD sounds 2-3 times as powerful ! My left ear is still ringing from the trial run 2 days ago. Currently don't have a dedicated pre-amp, using the pre on an old Akai reel to reel. WOW, awesome power even with 10 ohms speaker impedance per channel. Tried 3 ohms impedance it's practically unlistenable to me, way too loud for home environment, will knock stuff off the shelves. Would rule for an outdoor party though ! The bass hit feels like you're getting smacked in the face with something. Requires a dedicated pre-amp, if you don't already have one- for proper control. Doesn't need highly efficient/expensive speakers. They will either sound great, or be destroyed with power. Currently running 2 speakers per channel in series, they sound absolutely superb (all 2-ways with 8" woofers and bass ports- cheap Technics and Sonic, that are about 20-25 years old) The sound is astounding, simply blows away my old amp. Can't hear any distortion at all, crisp, clear, NICE- but very powerful. I run an equalizer between the pre and the NAD, to lower the gain 12 db across the spectrum when playing it quieter- gives more control. That says something about the NAD's power (the Akai pre is definitely bumping the signal way up). I can see why some reviews may call this a "bright" amp, and not the most musical. It's a very flat, true sound- not a jazzed up bass and top end like the cheaper receivers/amps have. CD's sound great through this, and I'm an analog guy ! Now I'm listening to my CD player more and appreciating clean sound with no background scratch or hiss. I played a few old blues 78's through it too, using an Educator phono, and a patch cord from phono headphone to NAD. AWESOME. This amp simply killS any so-called "surround" system out there, priced under $1000. I listened, compared, Sony/Yamaha entry level surround systems ($300) are a kid's TOY in comparison. You'd have to spend $1000 or more new, to match/beat this amp in an audio drag race. I'm satisfied so far ! Advanced power supply system gets away with no cooling fans. (it actually has 2 power supplies, a high and low)

Strength:

Never run out of power. Great bass and mid-range. Haven't been able to make them clip yet.

Weakness:

A little bright. Don't use them with 2 Ohm speakers.

I had a pair of these back in 1986 when they were new. At the time I was bridging them in mono powering a pair of Polk SDA SRS2.3 speakers. Loved the combination but had to sell them when I got married (isn't that always the case). About 2 years ago the former service tech for NAD said he knew of someone who was selling a pair. I jumped at the chance and picked them up. He checked them out for me and they were in perfect condition. I use them bridged for the front channel of my home theater setup. They have been powering a pair of Celestion Impact 300 towers. Unfortunately the amps are a bit much for them. I'm currently looking at the NHT SB3 or the JMLab 707 speakers as replacements.

Strength:

Incredible power in bridged mono. Dynamic power in bridged mono is 1200 watts at 8 ohms and 1600 watts in 4 ohms. Perfect to drive an 18 inch JBL stroker sub. No fans means quiet operation.

Weakness:

Broken solder joint near filtering caps caused a dead short, but that was fixed. No auxillary a/c plug for an equalizer.

I bought this unit used at an audio dealer in Calgary. I was prompted to buy it cause the price wasn't bad and the condition was immaculate. It was like out of the box condition, even on the insides, but there was no box for it. I wanted a 'power amplifier' to run off my pre-outs on my Kenwood KR-10000III because of house parties I used to do for friends. I was pleased with it's sound quality, but was a little disheartend when I found it was only 100 watts x 2 channels on a google search. I was later referred to a PDF file about every spec about this amp and was blown away. It would explain the smell coming from my 250 watt rated liquid cooled speakers when I wasn't even close to clipping the unit. Now those days of partying are over and I use it to drive tower speakers with the front channel and sub woofer pre outs on my marantz SR4200 with the same incredible results. I suppose I'm cheating by using both the normal and LAB inputs as the two front channels go into the normal, and the subwoofer is split into a y jack and into the lab inputs. Doesn't seem to hurt it at all.

Strength:

- Excellent value for money - Tight bass control - Dynamic range - Loads of power - Flexibility to be able to handle low impedances

Weakness:

- Treble can be overly bright when matched with speakers that are already bright. - Binding posts need replacing

This amp is excellent value for money. I recommend having a look at NAD's website - product support section, and download the brochure on this amp. The specs are more impressive than their current power amps - far more dynamic range and a greater power handling when driven by difficult loads. I purchased this amp to drive the midbass drivers of my main speakers in a biamped arrangement, however I am yet to make the biamp upgrade. My speakers are MTM transmission line using Vifa drivers, which I designed and built myself. I was temporarily driving my speakers with a 20 year old 50 watt Akai amp (AM-U33). The first thing I noticed about the amp was the bass. Where the Akai was reaching its limits, the NAD was able to go further, yet still well short of its capabilities. The bass was firmer, fuller, tighter, able to reveal more subtlety and detail. When driving my speakers to their linear excursion limits, it was clear that the amp had far greater control. As a result, the bass was tighter, punchier and more revealing. Unfortunately, the treble was not to my taste and in this regard, the Akai, a vastly inferior amp was more pleasing. As some other reviews have mentioned, the highs are a little on the bright side. I would say this may be a little understated. I found the highs intolerably bright - to the point that I ended up attenuating the treble by 2 - 6 db to try to soften it. On the Akai, the tonal balance of these speakers was just right. When I biamp my speakers, I will be using an amp that is sweeter in the highs. I intend to build my own class A amplifier for that purpose. Given this configuration, the NAD will be just right. For anyone concerned about the brightness of the highs, I should mention that my speakers use a metal dome tweeter that was already on the bright side (and which I plan to change to a fabric dome). But if you have bright speakers, you may find this amp is not to your taste. I would actualy like to get two more of these amps bridged mono to power my power hungry stereo subs. I got this amp for less than the cost of a typical subwoofer plate amp with higher distortion and much less power and dynamic range!!! *** If anyone in Australia has one of these (or similar NAD power amp) that they want to sell or have seen available, please email me!

Strength:

Strong mid and bass Bridged power is awsome Lab in gives better sound

Weakness:

Output relay soilder joints bad

I bought two of these for my klipsch speakers. I am using a denon 4802 as pre. I am using the amps for the stereo setup(front two) I listened to one and it didn't have enough power, it sounded good though. So I briged two so it had 400watts a side. What a differnce, great full sound. It does have a tendacy to have more mid and low grunt. This works great with my klipsch. Both amps would flip on and off when playing. So I took them a part and resoilder to relay joints. Now they work great.

Strength:

For very affordable, solid state amplifiers, you won't find a more honest 100 watts.

Weakness:

Not the most musical amplifier. But probably the most musical amplifier you can find for under $250 that'll drive non-powered floorstanders.

My roommate, quite unaware of his good fortunes, happened to become the owner of this amplifier, the NAD 1020 preamp, a B&O Turntable and a pair of Vandersteen speakers with a blown woofer. Apparently, his uncle was holding the gear for a freind who is in jail and won't be getting out for a very long time. Of course, I bought the NAD pre/amp from him immediately. The amp may not be in the best cosmetic shape, but it still sounds fantastic. This thing is powerful! I am driving a pair of RBH 1044s with side firing 10" woofers, and this unit cleaned up the bass considerably. It may not be the most musical amplifier NAD ever produced, but it will never run short on power. I recommend this amplifier to anyone who can find one for a decent price. It certainly beats anything under $250. Associated gear: Music Hall MMF 1 Sony DVP 300V SACD Player NAD 1020 Preamp RBH 1044

Strength:

Dynamics

Weakness:

None

I bought this amp new in 88. I have used it with the 1240 pre-Amp to push my Polk 2.3 These are 6 Ohm speakers.I also have a pair of Allison CD-6, 4 Ohm boxes used for the rear. This is quite a load on the amp however no problems. The dynamic headroom has been awesome to say the least. I had been searching for a second amp to bridge over the years however have settled on the single. The quality is top notch. While relocating overseas I noticed a cracking on warmup that was not there before. It has met every reasonable demand I have asked it to perform. I can push it too overload when I am driving the Polks hard. I have never had any serious clipping (damage) with the relays on or off.
