Krell evolution 402 Amplifiers

Krell evolution 402 Amplifiers

DESCRIPTION

Stereo amplifier 400 watts per channel with cast , large 5000va power supply. Active Cascode Topology eliminates global negative feedback, only nested local feedback is employed around individual gain blocks. The result is an extraordinarily open, liquid, effortless sound.

The signal path incorporates Krell Current Mode and CAST circuitry using proprietary multiple-output current mirrors in a complementary and balanced arrangement for extraordinary open loop linearity.

Evolution circuit topology breaks through bandwidth limitations of conventional designs resulting in near perfect performance in the audible range.

Strength:

1. Shear control and driving of most power hungry speakers. 2. Solid bass slam , control of overall performance. 3. Double output when the impedance are halved till 2 ohm.

Weakness:

1. Poor heat dissipating fins built inside the casing which make heat dissipation difficult. 2. Runs hot and make the machine even hotter with the in-case sinks. 3. Still hot even in stand by mode. Not possible to place inside the cabinet as heat will accumulate easily. Also with the main switch is at the rear of the unit, it is not possible to switch off when the set is placed in cabinet.

Strength:

I have built a number of ported and horn enclosures using both vintage (Trusonic) and modern (Klipsch) 15" woofers and the 402 for one brings out the bass in the Trusonics better than prior amps I have used, including McIntosh, Audio Research and Mark Levinson. I remember how the Trusonic 150 Frs sounded back in the 60s and some of that wonder has returned to these older ears. Otherwise beautiful sound all around.

Weakness:

It take two to set this monster up and it does require a dedicated line. It draws a lot of watts on standby so I don't leave it on when out. I have read the 402e has solved this problem.

Strength:

Gorgeous piece of equipment. A work of art. Marquis brand. Clean clear power. Pride in ownership. Great resale value if bought used. Good packaging.

Weakness:

Runs hot. Long warm up. Seemed underpowered to me at loud volume -- lots of clean power, but did not sound at ease.

Used with Watt Puppies 6, tube pre and transparent cables. Nice at very low volumes. Natural sound for solid state but a little lean (or too perfect?) in the midrange. Not at ease at high volume. Does not sound best on start up -- sounds better every hour - if cost no object leave it on (not me). Gets hot. Nice amp for an apartment in cold climate (again not me).

Strength:

excellent control, superb overall sound, great bass. details and phenomenal resolution, very luxurious sound with huge power reserve.

Weakness:

better if you have a friend over to help pick it up

krell has created something special here with the evolution 402. It is very natural sounding, probably the closest sound reproduction that I have heard. My Amati Anniversarios work well with the 400 watts. Krell is a wonderful match for them. I have 3 other systems with tube amps which are very good and I tested many superb tube amps (otl, ocl and with transformers) with the Amati's. The krell evo 402 sounds just as good in the midrange but much nicer sound overall , from the lows to the highs it is exquisite, superb contol and that famous krell slam. I am a fond lover of the tube sound and for years have never found any solid state that I could enjoy except now with this wonderful new krell , it is niether tubelike nor solidstate, its just real pure hifi sound.
