I bought the deck in the early 90´s for 4600 dgld. For that price I expected a workhorse. ( Compare Revox) After 3 years of intensive use ( 7á 8 housr a day) the capstan motor began to skreech. I took it apart; dust of the coolbrusches had gone into the axis bearings on both sides. Black dust throu the whole motor! Davenport Mobile Truck Repair Weakness:

Strength:
musicality, looks, vocals, I need to throw in my 2 cents on the Defy.... I have had 10 or so power amps in the last 10ish years including several krells, ML's and currently have the Defy and an ARC vt200.. I would NEVER say the defy is dull...BUTTTTTT it is amazing powercord dependent.... all of the 'killer' cords I used actually seemed to restrict the sound and musicality and a cheapie Belden had by far the most open sound... the thick Jadis cords stifle the sound...try another cord you may be amazed... |

Weakness:
WEIGHT(REALLY HEAVY)NOT EASY TO LUG AROUND I'm a bit perplexed by the reviews that the defy 7 has received from the previous 3 reviewers. It's either they purchase audio equiptment without auditioning them to see if it favors their suppossed sophisticated trained ears.....improper gear matching.....or hot air.. perhaps a combination of all mentioned. There is no one to blame except ....?????? I have the Defy 7 mark iv...and although not perfect , iT is a very fine tube amp.I replaced my arc vt100 mk 2 for the jadis. My opinion is the jadis is more musical..sweeter...and less fatigueing.there is less slam and oommph! THAN THE ARC..BUT MY TASTE IN MUSIC HAS CHANGED THROUGH TIME(MOTHER NATURE)AND IT IS BETTER SUITED TO MY PRESENT REQUIREMENTS. Similar Products Used: AUDIO RESEARCH YBA LINN ML KRELL |

I guess the previous three reviews are from the same nay sayer. Very unfair to Jadis. Defy 7 may lack the muscality of JA200, but it is a fine tube amp. |

Strength:
Warm and Vibrant
Weakness:
Narrow in the mids and hi's It is a fairly good amp for people that do not put detail and clarity as their priorities but musicality, easy sounding and warmth are unmatched! I must agree with the other reviewer uncompetitive now against newer competition. Value was expensive then and still expensive now vs competition. So a 1 star on value but maybe 2 to 2.5 stars for overall. Similar Products Used: Valve Audio, Audio Research |

Strength:
Laidback natural sounding
Weakness:
Lack of detail, soundstage and power I think the other posters here don't give justice to this amp. It is slow, lacks detail but it is musical in it's own right. For it's age this is a very good amp though compared to newer tube amps, it can be outclassed somewhat. 1 star on value but at least 3 stars overall. Similar Products Used: McCormick, Cary Audio |

Strength:
Power and good looks.
Weakness:
compared to newer tubes from Conrad, VAC and Cary Audio Defy 7 sounds dated, narrow mid and treble Sounds narrow compared to newer tubes. It fails on dynamics and openness. Used it for over 5 years and started to question it's dynamics 3 years back twhen I accidentally listened to the Conrads at a local dealer which was 1/4 the price.
