Can the PA5800 handle a 4 ohm load?

Good Sound, Good Price, Made in USA

For the price this is a great receiver. It has enough power to push my speakers with ease, and as it breaks in I'm just more and more amazed by the quality.

There were a couple of questions in the reviews about the "trigger" operation to turn on the PA5800 automatically. I just wanted to report that I got the trigger to work. I used a 9V adaptor, with a mini-plug connector, +ve lead in the center.

There is a mechanical switch that gets activated when you push in the plug. This makes the amp go into standby mode when you push the power button and the color of the LED turns amber. Then, when the trigger voltage is applied, the amp turns on (LED becomes green). If your amp turns on when you push the power button, and the LED goes straight to green that means you haven't pushed in the mini-plug all the way or you need a longer miniplug.

I noticed that the LED takes a few minutes to turn back to amber when you switch it off.

Enjoy.

Strength:

Nice smooooooth sound. Seems more powerfull that its specs report. Looks as good as it sounds.

Weakness:

Toridial Transformer picks up noise from houses with bad wireing.

This amp sould go down in audio history as one of the best values in audio gear ever, while it was on closeout. If you missed it you might have to wait another lifetime to find value this good. H/K should re-release this amp as a 6 channel version. You still can find one every now and then on Ebay if you are persistant.

Bought the amp @ J&R after reading all the reviews.I had an AVR25MKII before, liked the sound, but wanted more...

This thing cranks...great sounding amp, especially for the cash.

However, there is a weird hum through the speakers as the amp gets energized in the initial 0.5 sec.
I have had the unit emit a low (barely audible) hum (when no signal is sent o the speakers) on rare occassion, but I'm going to chalk it up to a bad AC power source.

Now saving the pennies for a Signauture 2.1

I have read (with great interest I might add) each of the reviews for the HK PT 2500 and the PA5800. I really don't have much more to add except a story about a real deal. A local company here in Mpls. bought all of the Wiz's stereo equipment from the east coast. To make a short story long, I picked up both pieces (after some price negotiation) for a paltry $340! Both pieces were new in the box and came with a full factory warranty.

My point is this - the deals are out there if you are willing to look AND negotiate. The manager that I ended up dealing with revealed that they still made a decent retail mark-up even after the negotiation. Of course, I believe that I got the better end of the deal since I now have, pound-for-pound, some of the best mid-entry equipment in the industry and money left over to enjoy other fine rewards.

Strength:

At $350, they're givin' 'em away.

Weakness:

A little noisy at power up, but no big deal

This is my first step up to separates and I'm glad I took the plunge. I have the HK AVR-75 receiver and I was reasonably happy with the sound until I purchased the Infinity Overture II speakers. They sounded OK, but it didn't seem like they had the kind of kick and the clarity I had expected from higher end mass-market speakers.

Because of the extremely low price ($349 from J & R Music), I decided the amp was too good of a deal to pass up. What a difference! The speakers have come alive! I was not ready for the dramatic difference between the output of the amp and the receiver. They are both rated at 80 watts per channel and although the HK receiver is high current, there is just no comparison between the two.

This is a great entry-level amp for the money. I am extremely pleased.

Just bought a 5800 from JandR for $400 plus shipping. Also ordered a Citation 21 preamp and tuner from Harman for $200. Absolute STEAL. Comes with factory 3 year warranty. Although the guy on the phone said it won't look new the internals are all guaranteed factory new. Sweet. I have not heard the combo yet (haven't received it) but I did demo a 5800 in a local shop and it sounded beautiful. I am going to bi-amp it to a set of Century 600i's (once I have the cash to buy them). Should be awesome when all is said and done. Although that Teac CD-Player is just not going to cut it. Marantz here we come.

Strength:

The pros of this amp
+Price $345 I don't think you can find another 5 channel amp of relative quality for anywhere near this price!

+Decent Performance - I get about 60% of the best amps I heard costing thousands of dollars

+Looks - Very nice looking and complements the decor of any home theatre system

Weakness:

The Negatives of this amp
+The Amp is a little too heavy and is more geared to home theatre (what is was meant for) for 2-channel music, it is too harsh. It's okay though, when mated with a good pre-amp, the five channel musical format is enough to shed tears.

+The construction is a little sub-par, I've seen components that have a little higher workmanship, but I don' t think it will matter in the mid to short term (I'm sure to upgrade by the time problems start occuring - if that

I think this is a great amp for the money. I wouldn't recommend it if your not into home theatre though, because I found it's lacking compared to other 2-channel amps. If your a true audiophile, and want a clean 2-channel amp, look elseswhere, but if you listen to your music in a 5-channel setup and/or plan to use in a home theatre, it is great. Make sure you have a good pre-amp and dac, Considering the performance I give it 4 stars, considering value 5 stars, so overall I give it 4.5 stars. I put 5 since I rounded up.
