A! Most of you are a remote section difficulties. Will, me it the best remote I ever know in the since that it is included in the package! You have to read & understand everywords in the manual or shall I say manual of this unit is not a bit user friendly kind it was made. But with the help of our common senses sure you can use more of the simple program you have with this great piece of equipement. Me I can use part of my GUI( graphica user interface for DVD)& 2 diff. brand of Svhs & TV as well. In short I really don't have regrets with the unit I have, the YAMAHA RXV-995 in my home theater .......Full blast as of the star rating is concern...... GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strength:

90Hz 12db/oct redirect on command, digital input flexability

Weakness:

remote somewhat a hassel to use

Just picked it up on 12/29/00 and spent about 6 hours dialing it in. Major upgrade for me - not only now in the Dolby Digital age, but the features are far superior to the Kenwood I replaced adding much more flexability. Able to run the system with all the tone controls "zeroed" now, and for that, a much cleaner sound. No need to "stretch" the signal to meet my listening demands with external procesing (EQ, etc.). Yamaha's DSP is very impressive. Never though I would own a Yamaha, now I am promoting it!

Strength:

Power, Clarity, That great Yamaha Natural Sound.

Weakness:

None

I own both the RXV995 and the Marantz Sr 7000. The Yamaha I now have powering a pair of B&W DCM7NT's. This receiver is incredible. I think its very easy to use, and its sounds much better than the Marantz, both on Home Theater and Stereo. My Marantz is powering some Boston Acoustic VRM-60's with a PV 600 Sub. It is not nearly as smooth as the Yamaha. I've switched speakers and the Yamaha still sounds much better. I don't think you can go wrong with this receiver. It's an incredible bang for the buck!

Strength:

Great receiver, very good quality construction. I have the dual voltage 'General' model. Better quality than US model.

Weakness:

Missing one feature I really needed, Remote spaker selector switch. Was misinformed that the 995 had this capability.
Might have to part with this at a loss unless I come up with a way to resolve my setup.

Denon, Sony, and Onkyo units in same price range were auditioned but Yamaha was clearly better for the money. I had not previously owned anything this nice and was very satisfied. Highly recommend.

Strength:

Styling and enough connections for most people

Weakness:

The "glow in dark" remote control

This a pretty good unit for the price. Any expectations of
equaling the DSP-A1 or Denon 5700 will not be realized. There is a different quality of sound from these Flagship units. But the 995 is still a very good unit. I have not physically used the similiar priced Denon, Sony, Onkyo or HK units, but I've heard them all. I can live at peace with the 995. The tuner is good (both AM & FM), the DSP modes are enough for MOST people, it has plenty inputs for whatever you want and I've experienced NO problems with the remote. It is not a lighted remote. The remote will "glow" after exposure to light.
Worth every cent, but beat by the DSP-A1.

Strength:

Discrete Power Transistors; Built-in Dolby Digital & DTS Decoding; On-Screen Display (via S-Video) w/Speaker Test Mode; Solid Above AVG Construction, all 31.1 lbs. worth; Extremely quiet @ REF Level while the DVD is paused; Extremely balanced AMPS, providing outstanding and solid, seamless DD-5.1 surround effects presentation (after 75 dB SPL Calibration using Video Essentials)

Weakness:

None - though some below think it would be the Remote - I don't!

I bought this monster Yamaha RX-V995 A/V Receiver (2nd from the Top Yamaha line) from RedTagOutlet.com for an unbelievable low-price of $529 (+ $15.50 S/H, no Tax) and I'm still pinching myself that I could get this Highly Rated Model (not a "B" goods or refurbished unit), "NEW" for this price.

RedTagOutlet's service and tracking system is excellent! This is the second product I purchased from them, and the experience was identical, complete satisfaction with substantial savings!

Hookup and understanding the features took a few minutes, but I was able to REF Calibrated the unit to my HT speakers within a half hour after powering on. I used Yamaha's Internal Test Tones for DPL, and Video Essentials DVD for Dolby Digital.

Hat's off to Yamaha, for the quality products within their product line. The year old Dolby Digital A/V Receiver, which is replaced by this new RX-V995 A/V Receiver, was another Yamaha product, . . .the budget priced Dolby Digital Yamaha RX-V905 (identical to the RX-V595).

My initial response was not how the RX-V995 dynamic impact, w/crystal clear, seamless surround effects sounded, but, . . . how close the R-V905 sounded, when I sampled my very familiar DD-5.1 DVD's (The Bug's Life; Mystery Men; Star Trek 1st Contact; Tomorrow Never Dies/SE).

The 3D-like separation, shimmering airy highs, seamless surround ambience and panning effects, were all there, like the very familiar R-V905. It reflects that the R-V905 to be an excellent, designed unit, following the Yamaha tradition, along with great performance vs. price!

Don't get me wrong, to the trained & untrained ear, the differences are there, and, ALL favoring the 2nd from the Top A/V Receiver in Yamaha's line, . . .but, . . .they were subtle! Subtle is the key word all right, then couple that with the refinement and smoothness associated with the higher priced Yamaha product, . . .and you'll get the picture that the Yamaha higher priced units reflects the justification for the higher price because of it's performance & features.

If you did a side-by-side comparison like I did, you would not regret the decision to purchase the budget model, if that's the one you choose. All the impact, dynamic presence is there, . . . but, if you had the money and choose the RX-V995, to a certain degree, it could be based on the better sound, subtle refinements and features. One thing is for sure, the difference is not like when you first compared the obvious startling improvement, coming from an DPL A/V Receiver to the wonderful world of 5.1 Dolby Digital! So again, hat's off to Yamaha!!

The Features that I really like in the RX-V995, that was not in the budget Yamaha R-V905/RX-V595;
1) Lighted (Red dot) Volume Knob Indicator
2) On-screen display
3) S-Video Inputs
4) More buttons (Unit & Remote)
5) More DSP modes

DTS??: Limited DVD's and $25 DTS CD Music, . . .uh, no thanks. But who knows, one day, they might be competitive in selection and price!??!

The Remote is functional, and can be intimidating. My main Remote is the All4One av Producer 8 (URC-8080) and most of the codes that operated my R-V905 works, . . .so the big Yamaha Remote is not an issue for me. Although, I do like the foldable door, and again, all the buttons! In time, I'll even "learn" some functions and create operational "macro's".

Highly recommended - not just because of the lower price, but because of the consistent Yamaha high-quality throughout their product line with performance vs. price!

Uh, well, OK, especially so, when you can get one @ 47% off MSRP!!! :)

Strength:

Clean power, digital coax and optical connections, DD/DTS

Weakness:

Remote is a joke. Dual banana plugs do not fit into the center or surround posts! Truly unbelievable.

I bought this unit for $690 and then saw it for $529 at redtagoutlet the next week. Painful timing. It replaced a Carver CT-29v DPL pre-amp. This unit does everything reasonably well and cannot be beat for the price. The OSD and menus are decent and set-up is relatively simple. The amp section sounds very clean but I am still using a separate 2 channel 250W amp on the mains for stereo listening.
I simply cannot believe that these knuckleheads built the back panel to accept dual banana plugs on the main posts but not on the surround and center posts. That is just staggeringly stupid but was my only real problem with the unit (And overall that is a pretty small problem).
The Denon AVR-3300 was a close second but I wanted the digital out. The Denon 5ch stereo did not matter too much to me. This unit should be sitting in my stereo cabinet for years to come.

Strength:

All around flexibility, quality, sonic reproduction, home theatre, S-video inputs, on screen menus.

Weakness:

The remote, which isn't quite as bad as some reviewers claim. The biggest problem is that there are way too few commands that control satellite/cable receivers, which is surprisng given that this is a home theatre receiver. I am still tweaking the programming of the remote and think I can assign some commands from a VCR2 input or another. But let's face it, the remote should allow full control (scan, guide, index, execute, etc.) of satellite receivers. Other than that, no weaknesses so far.

Excellent all around receiver. Obviously best used as a home theatre receiver, it is strong in virtually all areas. Enough power to move my Martin Logan Aerius speakers along with Klipsch subwoofer and center channel, and MB Quart surround speakers. The various effects are okay but ther are only a few I use (DTS, Dolby Digital enhanced, TV sports). I recommend it highly.

The Yamaha RX-V995 is an outstanding receiver. The level of detail is fabulous. My previous receiver was a Yamaha RX-V470. I thought that I was simply buying more power, better connectivity, DD and DTS. I turned out that I got so much more. The tuner is amazing. It makes FM worth listening to again. The detail of stereo music is much better than I had expected, without being too bright. In addition, when I switch sources, the receiver remembers the appropriate settings. For example, if I am listening to a cd in stereo and want to watch TV, the receiver turns on Pro-Logic as soon as I select the TV as the source. This is a great feature. As for the much maligned remote, I bought a Marantz RC 2000 last year so I can't really comment (I do love the RC 2000).
My speakers are Energy's Reference Video System. The DVD player is a Sony DVP S500D.
