Strength:

I love YAMAHA products especially amps & receivers. Its sound is so unique and live

Weakness:

Don;t know yet but I hope not

Ubid.com f***ed up. I bid on the 795 and they shipped me the 995 so basically I got a brand new 995 for only $407 though they ripped me off in S/H ($52, ouch). It serves them right.

My setup
YAMAHA 995
Front speakers: Infinity RS8
Rear: Infinity RS4
Center: Infinity HPS Center
DVD: Pioneer 302

Does anyone know if the Infinity HPS Center is voice-matched with the RS speakers ????

Strength:

competent all rounder excellent power and clarity

Weakness:

Maybe a tad bright for music (I fiddle with the tone controls and it's fine)

I Run the RXV 995 with:
Klipsch RF3, RC3 & RS3 speakers
Toshiba SD1200 DVD
Sony SLV EZ77 VCR

I have had the Yamaha RXV 995 for about 1 month and feel it is a very competent allrounder. Definetely it's strength is in Home Theatre. The Impact of the punches during the fight sequences of The Matrix are outstanding. Aided by my horn loaded Klipsch front speakers with 98Db/w/m sensitivity it goes LOUD!! The Yamaha handles dynamic changes effortlessly from a whisper to an explosion and it does so with excellent clarity. Modern soundtracks with their high dynamic ranges really do require serious power and the RXV 995 provides.
Switching to CD and the Yamaha does sound a little bright and maybe a bit more impact in the bottom end is needed but this is my personal taste and the tone controls are very effective without any detriment to the sound integrity. It is competent for what one expects from a home theatre oriented receiver but is certainly far from poor

I have always been anti DSP but the RXV 995 modes and their adjustability provide a program for most situations although most movie viewing is done in straight Dolby Digital. (Unfortunately there are no Region 4 DTS encoded discs so I have no idea what DTS is like!!) I like playing Playstation with the Pro Logic 70mm Sci Fi setting. The members of the household listen to everything from Sepultura to Underworld and Primus to Depeche Mode and the Disco, Rock and Jazz settings provide clearly audible sound field improvements. They do need to be tweaked to suit the listening room otherwise they sound terrible.
The Yamaha provides enough inputs for all but the most serious systems. It's nit picking but an extra audio tape loop would be handy because I may like to add an MD deck in the future to supplement my Yamaha KX 580 Cassette deck.

I definetly don't like the remote though. I think it's almost impossible to use without the door open. If it's closed there are simply too few keys to perform all the useful functions of the various components. (I like to 'zoom' watching DVDs or record on VCR etc...)

The Yamaha RXV 995 Is definetly a home theatre oriented receiver, an audiophile will still want a stand alone stereo amplifier. But I don't listen to Mozart and the yamaha will easily cope with most mainstream recorded programs. It doesn't want for facilities and it looks good to boot.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Strength:

Nice style DTS and DD sound great

Weakness:

2 channel stereo mode has very harsh highs. Remote only learns 20 functions. Different versions- USA, General ,etc Don't know what you'll get over the web.

This unit was replacing my Adcom GTP-450 preamp and Yamaha DSP E-200 surround proc. because I wanted to have DD and DTS but not pay the price of the Adcom surround unit. The yamaha sound excellent in DD and DTS. I havn't heard my sub play that low during movies before, but when playing a CD I could tell that the high were more forward or bright sounding. With my adcom Preamp and GFA-5400 amp I could crank it up until the distortion lights on the adcom were just about come on and the music was still clear and easy to listen too. With the Yamaha I couldn't turn the volume up past the 9 o'clock position without hurting my ears from the highs. I had the tone bypass on and had this running through my adcom amp so the only real change in my setup was in the preamp stage of the adcom vs the yamaha. The other issue I had was that I received a general version instead of the US model which of the 2 coax inputs the DVD one had the RF-AC3 module in it so my DVD player had to be connected to the CD coax input and the video went directly to the tv. So much for the digital DVD and CD connections and video switching capability that I want also as part of my upgrade. I also wouldn't recommend anyone buying a receiver from moreaudiovideo.com as they made me pay a 15% restocking fee (which I feel I should not of had to as if they would have sent me the US model I probably would have kept it and made what ever other adjustment to the highs and purchased a touchscreen remote) and they only offer a return within 3 days. I have sent this unit back and purchased a Onkyo TX-DS676 which has assignable digital inputs and a better learning remote.

Strength:

Exceptional stereo/2 channel sound. Very musical. Excellent DPL matrix decoding along with crystal clear DD/DTS decoding. DOES have an optical output for recording to MD or CD-R.

Weakness:

Flame wars entice deaf listeners to down Yamaha because they made the mistake of buying an inferior brand of receiver. Perhaps the lack of 96khz/24 bit DACs(shouldn't matter as most DVD players won't pass that digitally plus there is only a very SMALL selection of recording in the format. DVD-A/SACD is making these recordings a joke. Both these formats can not use a receiver's internal DACs.).

When doing an A/B audition on very revealing speakers, this receiver excels over the competition in the same price class and above.

Dynamics and instrument resonances are heard where they are masked by inferior receivers. This receiver reproduces sounds as they were recorded. In other words, if a recording was done badly, this receiver will show that recording's faults. In the same case, if the recording is excellent with exceptional resolution, this receiver will reproduce every bit of it. It will not mask poor recordings to make them sound better and it will not mask excellent recordings to make them sound worse. This receiver does as it should, reproduces accurately. Unfortunately, not many receivers at this price range have this level of class. Other manufactures reach these levels at higher price points.

Other's receiver are well above the $1000 MSRP to perform at the same level, let alone offer all the digital inputs/outputs with an advanced bass management. Others still haven't reached that level of bass management yet. I give 5 out of 5 for being the best in it's class.

Strength:

Very powerful and clear. Very crisp highs, and deep tight bass. Great Value, good performance for the money

Weakness:

The remote is cheep feeling w/ the door on it. Maybe a more user friendly remote would be nice

I originally purchased a Dennon AVR1601 for $400. With Denon's reputation I felt I was makeing a sound buy. When I got it home and hooked it up, I was very dissapointed. The highs were not there and niether was the bass. My buddy and I put on a DVD, Saving Private Ryan. We skipped to an action scene, and there was alot missing from the rear channels, that we normally here out of his OnkyoTX-DS575X.
I didn't say anything though, I just agreed that it sounded OK. I think he and I both knew that his Onkyo blew mine away for $50 more than I had paid for my Denon($400).

The next week when I had a day off, I went up to the store with my reciever, and explained how I was not happy with it. The salesman then showed me the perfect reciever,
the RX995. I am very happy so far! I guess I got what I paid for with the Denon.

My System so far: Yamaha RX995 , Panasonic DVD-C220(5-disk)
Mitsubitshi HSU-440, Proscan PS27115
Klipsch KSF 8.5(mains), PSB 50MKII(rears)
no good center yet

Strength:

solid constructon, inputs for most anything, clean sound, dts and dolby decoding, 2nd zone output

Weakness:

volume knob a bit cheap, lack of 96/24 dac's

i bought the unit as a replacement for a technic's dx-930. the sound from this unit is crisp and clear. the receiver seems to have an input for any type of component that i can think of - including 6 inputs for an external analog processor which will allow a hook up of dvd audio when it finally gets here. the receiver has a 2nd zone out (stereo & video only) that allows me to have a av set up in the bedroom (boy did that make the wife happy - she has that lorana bobbit look every time she sees it).

the down side is that the dac's should have been 96/24 but given that dvd audio will output analog only and the fact that my hk dvd player can output analog at 96/24 it really isn't critical to me, but it maybe for you.

The other parts of the system are:

Harmam Kardon DVD5
Various AR High Output Speakers (main room)
Yamaha Subwoofer
Technics SL1800-MK2 Turntable (still running great 18 years later)

Yamaha RX-V495 (bedroom)
NHT Speakers (bedroom)

Monster Cables for all inputs/outputs (except speakers)
