I finally received my unit after several weeks of backorder. DD is very impressive. I upgraded from a ProLogic Sony receiver and there is no comparison to the 995. Has anyone noticed this? - When I play the alternate ending of Blade, my receiver goes into ProLogic. I thought that it should go into DD 2 channel. Does this happen because of my settings or is my receiver not reading the signal.

I am totally impressed with the entire system, I hooked up a pair of Paradigm monitor 9 speakers. I turn it up have way and my house starts shaking. This receiver is by far the best one i have ever seen and heard. Does anyone know where i can get a dts encoded CD, i think they are called master copy's or something. This is truely an amazing receiver.

Upgraded to the 995 from the 793 just a few weeks ago. Incredible product. picked it up for $750 from a local authorized dealer. love the dsp settings fun to play with.
for those who havent bought yet: check out gnat at www.costsheets.com they are selling it for $745 shipped. they purchase from an authorized dealer-surcharge and send it to you with the original receipt and full warranty. a number of guys from www.hometheaterforum.com have bought from them w/ good results.

I have had my 995 for a week now and I have only one complaint.... The remote. What a piece of crap! I HATE IT. This thing is an ergonomic nightmare.
First off it weighs to much. Secondly all of the weight is in the front. Third it doesn't have enough memory. Fourth why would you paint plastic silver this thing should be black like every other remote I own. Fifth what is with the cheezy flippy door thing?

What was Yamaha thinking! I would suggest everyone let your dealer know what your thinking and then let Yamaha know.

Here's Yamaha Electronics address, phone and email...

Strength:

DTS & DD, dsp's

Weakness:

too many to list

I didn't like this receiver much. For the price, stereo reproduction should be alot better than it is, Poor bass management, No component switching, no coax input for DVD, no 24 bit DACS, only one s-video input and the tuner is below average. The remote is also a mess but that's nothing to really cry about. It does sound impressive in certain dsp modes and 5.1 is also a treat. For this price though, it just isn't worth it. I've used alot of Denons, Pioneers and Kenwoods that were $300 to $500 cheaper that were equally impressive. The Pioneer VSX-D509S and Kenwood VR-309 come to mind. Unless you can pick this Yamaha up way below $600, I would stay clear.

Strength:

GAF (Girlfriend Acceptance Factor), effects, digital inputs for dvd, and cd players

Weakness:

Definately the REMOTE

Since this reciever has been discontinued in favor of the 995a you can get it for about 300 dollars less than the suggested reatil price. The display on this unit is excellent, it is clean, crisp, and easy to read in all ligting conditions. The remote, is very confusing, and quite cluttered, but does a nice job of controlling all peripherals such as Cd or DVD players. This reciever has more than enough power to drive my set of Bose speakers. This reciever is excellent for home theater as well as casual music listening.

Strength:

Clear, soft yet fine sound, without harshness.

Weakness:

Remote, volume control, and speaker connections.

Remote: Never know which tuner station you're changing to or what mode it's in (Guess church mode is discernable!). In this day and age it's hard to imagine that the remote does not have a display indicating both the station and mode. (major inconvenience).

Volume control: Could use gearing down and a more solid feel (minor inconvenience).

Speaker connections: Prefer snap spring, or whatever you call it, as opposed to screws which I find clumsy in a dark cabinet (minor inconvenience).

Strength:

Great dolby digital.

Weakness:

Poor reproduction of music--tinny sounding.

I was looking to replace my Yamaha RXV-1070, an awesome sounding receiver for music, with clean, clear, balanced sound. The one problem is that it wasn't dolby digital ready. So I tried the 995 which sold me on dolby digital. However, it sucked for music--the sound was tinny and hollow. So I upgraded to the 2095 which is better in all respects, including music. (It has too many unecessary gizmos, though.) I'm still trying to decide if it's good enough though. If not, i may try a Denon 3600.
