Strength:

Incrediable sound quality- exact same as the 2095, and even the DSP-A1 For under 1K!

Weakness:

Remote, unless you know how to take advantage of it.

This was the very first component when I wanted the addition of a home theater in my home. I did a lot of research, mostly focused on Yamaha for the reviews pointing out the excellentcy of their Amps and receivers. I first considered the DSP-A1, but with no tuner, and a heavy price tag ($2499 MSRP), it wasn't an option. I then got a recomendation for the 2095. This little brother to the DSP-A1 (not to little might I add, meaning they were almost the same product) was $1599 MSRP, and had a tuner. Boy I wanted it, but just under $1,000, and that's what I got, the RX-V995.
Away with the personal side of it, this receiver is incrediable. The 2095 was a 7.1 system with a few more DSPs, than the 995, but that's where the differences end. The 995 is a 100 watts (8 ohms) X5 receiver with 25 DSP programs, 4 optical (CD/DVD-LD/TV-DBS/Tape-MD for best audio connection) and two coaxial (DVD-LD/CD) inputs. The system can take 4 main speakers (A, B, or both), and has pre-outs for all including subwoofer. Basicly it has everything except RF (only for LD coaxial anyways). The tuner has 40 station pre-set, and the system as a whole is incrediable, worthy of THX certification (in my opinion) but that being the only thing it doesn't have, but also doesn't need.
As for the sound, it is a true experience, and has 6 channel upgrade for future expanion to another 5.1 system or DVD-Audio. You'll be amazed at it. As for the remote, you get used to it, and if you know how to program the macros, it can come in handy, and being backlit makes it easy to use in the dark. Overall this is one of the best, until something better... The RX-V1 (DD 6.1EX/DTS 6.1ES) due out next year.

Strength:

Great sound, easy to use

Weakness:

Remote could be a little more intuitive

Overall a great receiver - I know several other people who own them and love them. I'm very pleased, especially as I bought mine when Yamaha switched models to the 1000, and saved $200.

One comment in many of the reviews is that when the volume is turned down on this receiver (so you're not creating spousal discontent...), it's hard to hear the low sounds. One thing I've found on the receiver is a dynamic range menu, which lets you go from maximum (theater sound), to minimum. On minimum, it compresses the dynamic range so that there isn't such a large gap between the really loud sounds and soft conversation. It helps quite a bit.

Strength:

versatile unit for home theatre and music listening

Weakness:

remote is cumbersome, volume knob feels light, bass and treble
could be more defined.

I have owned my 995 for almost a year and am still very
happy with my purchase.I have really driven this unit in
home theatre and music listening modes,i think it might get
warm a little fast but that may be just me.As others have
stated the remote is something else and the volume control
just does not feel like it should and i think the bass and
treble are a bit on the broad side but the power and features make it a small issue.

Strength:

Lots of power, plenty of inputs for whatever you might need, excellent audio quality, easy to install and start using, learning remote; cinema modes

Weakness:

remote control a bit confusing; remote macros doesn't perform quite well

It's a great AV receiver. Probably the only one you'll need to buy in a long run, 'cause it has everything you need in such a device, even provision for external decoder for future audio formats. Can't go wrong. Make sure you get good cables with banana plugs. Makes conections a lot easier.

Strength:

clear,clean sound,powerfull,excellent surround sound

Weakness:

bass is ok not the best.

this is my second review.

i went to BestBuy to buy a DVD Test Platinum Edition. Put it in my Pion 525 player, select DTS surround sound demos. you know.. the sound is incredible, 4 x better than DD( forget Dolby Logic !). After the DTS test, my speakers smoking, my ears bleeding, my fishes belly up, ..and worse, my wife cursing ..man ! wow .. there is no drop out or shut down... nothing. the machine works like a champ.

my conclusion: this is a good receiver. the hi is clean and clear, the bass is medium , surround sound is excellent. the bass can be fixed by adding subwoofers(i have 2 power subs ). other brand receivers high / mid may be muddy and it is very hard to fix muddy sound..believe me.

I am happy with this receiver and will keep it for a long time.

Chao and happy yammy !

Strength:

Exceptional amps, extreme flexability, clean solid looks cant beat the price per performance ratio even if you paid full retail when it first came out.

Weakness:

could use a little work on the remote, but its not that bad once you get used to it.

As you can see I like yamaha products and I have heard all of the competition in all classes, I was looking for a little more wattage and flexability and I stumbled on the yamaha rxv995, I had heard it before and was simply amazed but the $999.95 was a little steep at the time so I started saving my pennies to get one, well when I came to the shop to pick one up I decided to try and talk the salesperson down(like i usually do lol)told him I only had $560.00 cash and he said sold no complaining simple as that, brand new in the box from a authorized yamaha dealer, well the 995a is coming out so I know these are going pretty cheap,I really would take all day telling you how great this thing sounds (2ch and 5.1) it has a very smooth sound to it also keep in mind the speakers you match with your reciever if you have bright sounding speakers and a warm sounding amp it just might balance the sound as well as a bright amp and warm speakers, my system consist of:

Yamaha rxv-995
Paradigm 7semk3s(mains)
Paradigm cc-170 (center)
Paradigm atoms(surrounds)
Paradigm pdr-10(sub)
Kimbercable (speaker cable)
Hitachi 32"

I recommend this reciever wholeheartedly with more than 5 stars, not just because Im a yamaha fan, but it really does perform above and beyond its retail price tag let alone the $560.00 I paid this is hifi heaven, happy listening!!!.

Strength:

Efficient power, abundance of facilities, Music DSP modes, classy gold finish

Weakness:

Front switches not wieldy enough, remote quality & functionality, internal fan not working, Dolby Digital via coaxial digital input not working

This is generally favourable critique on the product, although I shall highlight my problems.
Right chanel stronger than left prompting me to adjust balance to left.
Dolby Digital coax input not working (link from coax output of Sony DVP-705 DVD Player).
Internal fan only switches on momentarily when powered on and then never runs again. (Can anyone explain if this is normal... Maybe my unit does not get hot enough to activat the fan?)
Volume knob feels plasticky.
Remote construction & functionality is an insult to Yamaha itself.

The unit took quite log time to burn-in. Sound feels smoother after 3 months.

Strength:

extremely clean sound with about as much sonic accuracy you can get for the money. Loads of inputs.excellent dsp modes(if your audio interests are to be taken away from your living room from time to time),pre-outs(for future amp upgrades)
great DD and DTS reproduction

Weakness:

would have likeed to seencoaxial in's and out's for Tape input(coax is best),but that could be considered nit-picking! Although I like te remote,it can be a bit cumbersome at times with it's size and the lack of illumination makes nightime controlling a hassle.(once again....nit-picking)

I truly believe this product to be a great one.I mean is there better? Well, yes but better how??We who consider ourselves enthusiasts, audiophiles etc,all want the best. The only thing that stops us is budget conciousness(or your wife!!)So having the best comes down to what you can afford at this present time, right? The yamaha 995 sounds great,is easy to use,and most importantly leaves you in an upgradable situation. As I mentioned above I used to own a carver thx certified amp which I no longer own(loong story) That amp was and still is in adifferent class, but when I hooked up my 995 I couldn't believe my ears. One day I'm sure I'll upgrade to new amps,or maybee 6 channel dvd audio...or who knows. What I do know is that in the meantime,on my quest for audio perfection,my comrade Mr.995 can do a splendiforous job for me now and into the future as I graze down the path of both, audio bliss and economic frustration!!
