Strength:

It's built like a tank and just about as heavy..easy front panel always loved the simple Yamaha design.

Weakness:

PRO-Logic only, but now you can upgrade it. This link www.msbtech.com/Catalog/FAQ/5-1.htm Tells you how. Now we can have our cake and eat them too. Remote- Way too much on it, Never needed half the stuff, and a button broke early on but who cares really...

I have been reading the reviews about a product that I already have and love. I have cranked this unit up do much over the years it is like an old friend. I can rock the neighborhood anytime I want to. I purchased it with a powered Yamaha Sub, center and surround fronts and rears. These little Yamahas sound better than the compable BOSE at the time and were about $200 cheaper. The only weakness this unit ever had was the Prologic Only. But you can upgrade it now!!! DTS Here we come..

Strength:

Performance, reliability, useability, overall quality

Weakness:

Not upgradable to Dolby Digital, no center channel pre-out.

This is the best consumer product that I have ever owned. I purchased this unit new over six years ago, and it had been in constant use until replaced last month with a new Yamaha RX-V995 Dolby Digital unit. The RX-V870 was a joy to own. I really pushed the unit's capabilities with numerous high volume, extended listening sessions, and it never failed or degaded in performance. The fidelity was outstanding for a unit in its price range. The remote was a much better made unit than the new one that comes with the 995. The only reason I replaced the unit was to go to Dolby Digital, so I that could better utilize my DVD's. I hope that the new unit is as durable and enjoyable to own as the 870. This unit is highly recommended for anyone looking for a fine Pro-logic receiver.

Strength:

Amplifier Section, Remote, 2x centers, pre in/out.

Weakness:

aging model year.

Yamaha's last best receiver/amp at it's price point. It
can't match todays preamp and switching demands
but as an amplifier for low ohm speakers or for
second-room use it remains excellent.
This 80x3-25x2 watt workhorse weighs as much as today's
110x5 units. No gimicky torroidal transformers and
vlsi chips, just a massive transformer feeding a nice
output stage. Lots of heatsink and a very roomy inside.
Final stage on mains are Audio Black&Gold 10,000uf
6.3v .

Strength:

Great DSPs, clean sound, remote can learn

Weakness:

No s-video switching

I've been very pleased with my receiver, though it's getting close to upgrade time (Dolby Digital and DTS, S-video switching). It's been rock solid, no problems, very clean sound. If you want an entry-level receiver and don't need all the latest bells and whistles, this would be a fabulous closeout or second-hand buy.

Strength:

SVideo switching, main in/pre out, preamp outs for all channels, 2 center channel hookups

Weakness:

No 5.1 input (though to be fair, this was designed before Dolby Digital was on the horizon).

In its day and age, there was no better value in a receiver. The S-Video switching feature alone made it a stand-out piece for its price range (the gentleman below is mistaken, this unit DOES sport S-Video switching on every A/V input). I paid $700 from Uncle's Stereo, and I'm going on my 7th year with it in my main system. That means I spent about 30 cents per day to have this great piece of gear.

Even though it's time for me to go digital, this thing still pumps out some great sounding music and movies. I think the Pro-logic modes and DSPs are some of the best, even compared with other manufacturers' latest offerings. The amplifier portion has always sounded great to me. I think in later years, Yamaha has begun to skimp a bit on the amp section in all but their flagship models. You now hear Yamaha sound regarded as "bright" or "thin". This model does not suffer from that syndrome.

Alas, the Audio Bluebook has this reciever valued somewhere near $250. I will never sell it for anywhere near that. It is a great piece of equipment, and I will recycle it in anther room as the heart of a second system. My family will be enjoying this unit for years to come. What a great sounding, reliable piece. If you ever find anyone silly enough to sell theirs for $250, buy it. You won't regret having it around.

Weakness:

couple minor, but not noticeable.

The receiver is built like a tank, very heavy. I have had it for about 6 years. I use it for music only. It never fail me at any point, it works flawless sice the date I purchase it. I like the look and the built quality. The front panel and all buttons are made from metal. the amp is so powerful. I used ti to drive so many kind of speakers(including Bose 901, a big pair of Yamahe speakers, and now is the Accoustic Energy Aegis 3). In my own opinion, this receiver is better than the Denon 2800 and Onkyo 656 I currently have now. it give a very powerfull bass and a crisp high frequency(not like the Onkyo). I'n thinking to upgrade to the better one, but can't find any one with better amp. I have auditioned some saperate amps and pre amps, but still not get convinced to let it go.

Strength:

Great sound, plenty of power

Weakness:

can't adjust treble and bass with remote

I have another receiver the sony STR-D715, both cost me $100 used, so which one do I use as my main receiver.. The yamaha. Much improved sound, it sounds much fuller than the sony. It lacks some of the bells and whistles, like not being able to adjust the tone with the remote, but
the volume control on the remote is great. This is a great receiver, I feel like I got a great deal on it and I am trying to hold out from buying a dolby digital.

I should mention that this receiver can take low impedances, my cerwin vega fronts are only 4 ohms a piece. My rears are also 4 ohms and I have had no trouble with over heating what so ever

Strength:

Great, warm sound. Runs very cool. Great looks. Rugged as hell.

Weakness:

No digital inputs (were they even avalable then?)

I've been pushing a pair of Klipsch KG 4.5's, a pair of Klipsch surrounds and an M&K sub with this baby for about 5 years now. The sound is unbelievable. The Yamaha seems to have no limit to what it can drive: (Yamaha + Klipsch horn = concert level sound) and the sound is also warm at low levels. Wish it had digital inputs, but its a shame to trash a perfectly good receiver for one feature. Dolby decoding is better than others I tried at the time, but Pro Logic is long in the tooth now. Great product.
