Strength:

Great price and the sound for DD is one of the best I have heard

Weakness:

Long silly remote

I heard the Yamaha RX-V793 at The Wiz in stereo mode only and the Salesperson told me for the price that it can't be beat. I took it home and hooked it up to Polk Audio RT55 for the fronts Polk Audio 400 for the center a pair of Polk
Audio fx/500 for the rear and a velodyne sub. The sound is unbelievable. I love this reciever. Thank you The Wiz.

After seeing that the RX-V793 was only 80X5, I was a little hesitant. At the time, I had a Pioneer Pro-Logic receiver that was 100X3 across the front, and I didn't really want to go down in power on my upgrade to Dolby Digital. Well, I went ahead and bought the Yamaha from my local retailer for $699 and they gave me a 30 day return guarantee. I'm VERY happy with the Yamaha, and let me assure you, the 80 watts from the Yamaha is much better than the 100 watts from the Pioneer. Anyway, this is just my personal experience and opinion, but the RX-V793 is a great receiver!

I Bought this receiver just a few days ago from a mail order company for $599. This receiver is capable of giving 80 watts of power to all 5 Channels. This receiver has great AC-3 Performance and Good DPL Performance. The Tuner is good too. The DSP Modes are the Best. When watching a Movie in AC-3 without DSP it sounds bad. But when watching a Movie with DSP (Especially Digital Movie Theater) the Sound is Large. It sounds like you're inside some big theater. There were alot of good features though. Such as Tone Bypass which puts all frequencies at 0db to give a Flat Freq. Resp. This makes it alot harder for the amplifier to overload. There are other modes too. One Mode takes all bass from all channels below 100hz and directs it all to the Subwoofer. This Receiver is one of the Best i've ever heard. What Do You Expect? It's a Yamaha

This is a great receiver, but honestly, if you mail order the 992 for $740 (less than buying the 793 at a store), you will be much better off. The 992 has better amplifiers in the front speakers. I heard the two side by side and although they are both 80-Watts, the 992 has much more bass and is smoother. Besides mail order it for what you will pay retail for the 793 and you win.

Sorry I have to post this here but I would like to Know the name of the place Rene has. I've read and heard good things about the 793 (stereophile G to Home Theater) and that is a great price!! Gracias!! (thanks) Miguel
P.S. The three stars is for lack of 6 chanel input for external decoder (DTS) + haven't " really" listened to it so can't fully coment.

I bought this receiver from Bryn Mawr Stereo a couple of days ago. I was pleased with the power and the dsp settings. But a couple of things that i didn't like was the fact that if you're using DVD than the User-Interface can't be used. The reason is because there are S-Video inputs but it's only for the VCR Function. Therefore you can't hook up the DVD's S-Video input into the DVD Input. What the hell is this? what utilizes the S-Video Input more? DVD or a S-VHS VCR?
If anyone who is interested in buying this receiver knows anyone who can get them a discount from Best Buy than, ask them to get you a Discount for the R-V1103. It is EXACTLY the same except the Cosmetics and the Power Ratings. (Both are 80w x 5 when in the full spectrum).

I recently bought the RX-V793 for $550 and am very pleased with it. The Yamaha replaced my Sony STR-D450Z (which has good Pro-Logic Decoding but not too good amplification). I got a new Polk System with the RX-V793. I love the RX-V793. The Amplification is perfect and to me it has one of the best AC-3 decoders (Dolby Laboratories Rated it as one of the top ten AC-3 Decoders along with Sony ES, Cinepro, Zoran, Motorola, Pioneer Elite, Harman/Kardon, Theta Digital, JBL, MSB Technology, and Rotel. The rating was based on the fact about how well the Decoder met the standards of Dolby and how well the decoding was). If you don't like the sound of the RX-V793's Amplifiers than use it as a Second Room Sound System and use the Pre-Amp outs to hook up a more powerful and better amplifier.
Currently I have a RX-V793 as the main receiver, Sony DVP-S7000 (looking forward to geting the 7700) as the Video Source, Panasonic PV-7450 as the second video source, Sony DSS for satellite source.

My speaker configuration includes Polk CS350LS as the Center, Polk RT800p as the Front, 3 Pairs of RT7 as the surround, and a Polk PS150 as the subwoofer. I got it all from Gramophone LTD. for $1750.

p.s. Anyone want a full Home Theater System?

It's my old system. It has 1 Sony STR-D450Z, 1 Polk CS250 Center, 2 JBL SVA1600 Front, 2 Cerwin-Vega HT-SAT5, and 2 JBL PSW1000.

The Whole System price is for only $500

Price I paid:
Sony : $299
Polk CS : $199
JBL SVA : $799
C-V : $229
JBL PS : $459

everything is under 1 year old. There are no defects or anything like that. They work fine and the only reason I am selling them is because I have knew components and I do not need a second room sound.

Well, I must agree with most people here. This receiver is quite the product for the price. When I first set it up, I was just amazed at the DSP modes provided. I also find that the 80*5 rating is a little low. I think this little puppy could probably pump out 100*5 for a good amount of time without much problem.
I had bought mine for $940 CDN ($670 US) and they threw in 50 ft. of 12 gauge wire. I don't think everybody can get a deal like that especially since I am a regular customer at the place I bought it. Now, the only downside to this receiver is the fact that it has only 2 S-Video inputs. Even worse, is the fact that one is for VCR and the other is a video aux. This means that if you have a DVD or DSS, you can't have S-Video and Dolby Digital. You can have one or the other. I think they made the front panel S-Video to use for a camcorder which is kind of ineffecient to me. But if you don't need S-Video (and don't plan to use it in the future either) then you will probably love this system. I traded in my 793 for the 992 because of the lack of S-Video and to tell you the truth, if you can spare the extra $200 CDN ($140 US) then go for the 992. Look for my review of the 992 for details on the difference between the two models.

Steve,There are alot of things you have to think about before mail-ordering. First what about the warranty? and what if you don't get all the parts. All Mail-Order companies for the Yamaha RX-V lines are not factory authorized. You might now get a Remote control. Which alone costs $185. There are not better amplifiers in the 992 but there are more Amplifying Stages. Which gives more tight bass not louder bass. The more Amplifying stages is known as Linear Damping Factor. You SHOULD NOT USE S-VIDEO SWITCHING. Reason? unless you have thick cords there will be signal-loss when using the S-Video Switching. That is why most Videophile's recommend using a direct-tv connection.

p.s. I still support the RX-V793 and will still give it the same rating.

This is a great receiver for the money. It is definately not audiophile material. For that you need to move to the 992, 2092, or A1. By the way, I can get all of those mail ordered cheap. For example, the 793 will cost $560 shipped and the 992 will cost $740 shipped. The 2092 is about $1,200 shipped and the A1 will be under $2k. If your interested let me know.
