I was looking for a FM receiver to play FM in the garage. For $75 at a church charity, this fit the bill perfectly. It came with the owner's manual and the learning remote.

In terms of power this receiver has more amplifier power than my new Sony Str-dg720. it easily drives the Bose Acoustimass II system it is hooked up to. These older receivers appear to have more power capabilities than the latest models. The FM stereo tuner is very sensitive even with just the short factory antenna. The tuning meter "pegs" on most local FM stations. The sound is excellent over the full range with the Bose satelite speakers providing a heightened mid range/high range effect. The remote has buttons for every function you can dream of. It's range was exceptional (50 ft - line of sight). So when you are underneath the car working you can be confident you can adjust the volume without stopping work.

If you are looking for a good alternative to a boom box for the garage or patio, the Yamaha RX-V690, should be taken into consideration. One additional point: if you ever need to sell the receiver you should be able to make a few $$. The older models are starting to appreciate.

Strength:

very powerful!

Weakness:

none

I upgraded from my Sony STR-DE515 and got this baby. My Sony was good for listening to music, but not so good for surround on movies, I ended up getting this baby from my friend and boy let me tell yea, I put on gone in 60 seconds in my Toshiba DVD, and it woke me up!.. This thing is amazing! Good surround sound and a real bang for the buck!

I am now a true fan of Yamaha!

Strength:

strong, clear sound....very useful DSP surround effects, High quality

Weakness:

does not remember previous surround modes when switching between inputs...other than that, none

This is an excellent receiver, especially for the price. Numerous DSP surround modes for both plain surround and Pro-Logic modes. Clear, clean sound w/ very nice remote. I highly recommend Yamaha....high quality sound and durable.

I bought my RX-V690 4years ago, Excellent reciever!!!!!! but the only problem is that it is not "DD Ready". I actually have to replace it, but i will go Yamaha again. The RX-V690 does play like a champ, from music to Movies. I was never dissapointed with it.

Strength:

Great Features, Crisp clear sound, good quality system, awesome surround ability

Weakness:

Not digital

I bought this in November 1996 as part of a home theatre system BEFORE home theatre took off. The sound is outstanding and coupled with a Panasonic HiFi VCR, Toshiba DVD and Marantz CD player, I have never been disappointed with it. This is a piece that I think will serve me for many, many years.
