Strength:

Many speakers, Optical Ins and good wattage

Weakness:

more video ins, remote control dosent operate some brands

I am a 15 year old teenager and i love nice clean audio and i looked at Sony,Denon and some other brands but this one was the one that standed out cause the Sonys are too much stuff chucked in for a low price and crap sound and the Denons are to much

I have 6 speakers 4 fronts(2 floor standing and 2 normal) and 2 rears i have'nt got around to center and sub yet cause i have been busy getting a new TV and now i need to save up for a car.

This amp gives me everything i want from it and the remote is perfect and who needs a volume LED and DTS cause not all DVDs have DTS. My amp is hooked upto my computer and its gives good sound other then the crap sound card i got.

The sound quality is clear even on tuner and CDs maybe the problem other people have is not setting the right DSP setting cause i have mine on the DISCO setting and it sounds fine

I love my Amp and am not planning to change it for ages and it really annoys the neighbours

Strength:

Excellent clean sound quality, very powerful for a 60 watt amp.

Weakness:

No DTS, but DD is standard no need to invest more $$$$ for a receiver that has both decorders built in.

After careful shopping I decided on the Yamaha RV-X396. I almost purchased an Onkyo (which is a good receiver) but after listioning to the home theatre system set up in Tweeters I fell in love with receiver. I brought it home and set it up in my living room which is 17' X 18' I was told by some sales people in another electronics store I would be wasting my money purchasing the system for it would be too weak to fill up my room. I set it up expecting the worse and got the best. I can not even raise the volumn 1/3 of the way without having to turn it down. For a 60 watt amp it rivals anything out there that I heard that is 100 watts of power. Anothere reason why it sounds so good are the speakers. I bought a wise buy package from Tweeters which is a complete surround sound package, that includes Boston Acustic speakers and the receiver. I could not believe how fantasic the sound is in my room. I would highly recomend this receiver to anyone who wants a receiver for home theatre. And if you are looking for a surround sound package I recomend going to Tweeters, they know their business and they treat their customers right.

Strength:

Awesome sound. Makes my old Jensen Concert Serie speakers really sing a mean tune. Great for Home Theatre digital audio and digital CD Audio. VERY clear and precise.

Weakness:

The RX-V396 system could use a little more bass amplification. (Analog audio is bland anyway). I am running an older model Technics EQ to make up the difference.

Overall - This A/V receiver functions exactly the way I expected it to, if not better - and I love it. Let's face it, the 5x65W config on this receiver wipes the floor with some higher-priced receivers bragging 5x100W that pump audio with much less AMPs.

AND....It's got a tape loop, which is a pre-requisite for me because I watch my VHS movies EQ'd and record EQ'd cassettes from CD's occasionally. My EQ works through the tape monitor jacks and I wont part with it - YET.

Stereo sound

I´m using it with Yamaha acoustic boxes (210P) and
sub-woofer -- in Brazil, this combination is
sold as a bundle (YHT-B4).

The cinema sound is good, you won´t be disapointed.
However, the stereo sound that comes from the tuner
or CD is really, really disappointing -- my old Aiwa
minisystem offers a sound very similar to it.

So, if you want to buy it for music, think about
buying a more sophisticated equipment.

Strength:

Build quality (inside and out), dolby digital sound, useful DSP modes, binding posts for main speakers.

Weakness:

Remote is too thin to use comfortably, no volume level indicator or led, most importantly (the reason why I returned it) poor two channel stereo sound quality.

To keep things short and sweet; I purchased this reciever to replace my pioneer with a higher quality piece of eqipment. That is what was accomplished. It looks great, has excellent workmanship for the price, and would probably have held up longer than my pioneer. It sounds similar to the pioneer in dolby digital mode, which I would say is typically excellent. It is a tad easier to use by virtue of it's remote. However, it sounds much worse when playing CD's for 2 channel listening. It is bright and overly harsh. My Paradigm Mini-monitor speakers are very revealing of sub-par amplifiers. If you only listen to movie soundtracks, you will not be disappointed. If you listen to CD's often (with decent speakers),you will.

Strength:

Power,control,efects,looks,PRICE!!!!!!,sound......

Weakness:

No visible volume indicator

Looks great, sounds even better. It has "only" 5x65W output
power but it´s stronger and has more control then some
other receivers who claim they have 5x100W or larger amounts
of power. If you need cheap receiver that will give you Dolby Digital,RDS,Pro Logic, solid speaker conectors, lots of inputs(digital and analog),about 21 DSP programs(there is something for every taste),6 CH input, you can´t go wrong with this one. Sound is clear, open and strong with great control. I didn´t listen to it before i bought it and from what i have heard i didn´t have to. This Yamaha
receiver is a A1 product. Buy it before it´s gone.

Strength:

Powerful, great build quality, excellent sound.

Weakness:

I can't really think of any.

This is a great reciever.
Its not 100 watts x5, but it is true power so it does pack a punch.
The audio quality is great. I have a 4 piece speaker system in my bedroom right now wich consists of 2 Boston acoustic CR5's, a CR2 center channel, and a Yamaha YST90 subwoofer.
As soon as I add the rears I can better judge the surround sound features.
The sound quality is crystal clear.
I have this one in my bedroom, and mainly watch tv, listen to cd's, or watch VHS movies with it.
I also have a much more expensive Sony STRDB-930 in my living room that I watch DVD's with. I really don't use half the
expensive extras on the Sony, and probably should have just bought another one of these.
Its really worth the money.
I give it two 5's because its a great price, and you wouldn't expect something so good for that much.
