Strength:

Superior Stereo/DD/DTS performace. 6 channel external
input. Solid build quality with a quality amp.

Weakness:

No analog bypass mode. 20-bit DACs. (24-b would've been nice)

This is my 3rd receiver since March 97 and I've used the
2095 since Nov 1998. Needless to say, I've been extremely
happy with it's performance and have no plans to change
it in the near future. I listen to lot of DTS CDs and the
Yamaha performance is outstanding to say the least. Yamaha
DSP for the novie soundtracks are the best I've heard in any
receiver. Once you adjust the parameters to suit your
room environment they can sound very realistic. However,
I prefer not to use the DSP modes when listening to DTS
CDs. IMHO, DTS music sounds more natural with regular
DTS decoding mode (5-ch). 7-ch DSP modes are great for
film soundtracks, although I tend to just use one or two
modes (adjusted to suit my room) pretty much all the time
when watching DD/DTS movies.

I strongly recommend this receiver to anyone considering
buying a receiver. The DACs in the receiver are 20-bit
and it has no analog-by-pass mode to avoid the internal
DACs. Even with these two limitations, I think it's a great
value for receiver shoppers.

Strength:

Unreal build quality. Has reserve power to spare-seems to have a very conservative rating. Very nice uncluttered look with just 2 knobs and 2 buttons visible.

Weakness:

Remote-kind of wierd but does work once you get used to it. Many parameters can ONLY be accessed through the remote.

Got this receiver new in the box for an excellent price because of it being phased out for the RX-V3000. I could not pass on the deal, and I took a chance and bought it without even listening to it just on the strength of the quality of the reviews here. I am not dissappointed. Even though it doesn't have the latest gadgets and gizmos, the quality of sound and build is outstanding. I am a 90% 2 channel music listener who likes to watch an occaisional movie and this thing has all of the features that I need along with quality of power. I couldn't believe it, but instruments sounded completely different and much better with this receiver as compared to the other two mentioned above. I didn't think that a change of receivers could make that much difference-I feel as if I've been taught a lesson about how important the quality of the signal processing and amplification is. If you can still find one, grab it. It'll be worth whatever you pay for it.

Strength:

Great for both music and home theater

Weakness:

Limited for upgrading

I loved this reciver when I first got it but now I'm seeing the new line of recivers from both Denon and Yamaha and this particular reciever fails in comparison. About 3-6 months ago this was the best reciver out there for the buck no questions asked. Now i'm looking at the Denon AVR 3801 and the Yamaha RXV 1000. What your missing in the Yamaha 2095 is the following: Component Video Input/Output, 6.1/7.1 Dolby Digital and DTS, 5/7/8 Channel Stereo, 32-bit processor/DSP's.

The biggest disadvantage I think is not having component video inputs. This means that this reciever will not be able to do HDTV in the future or right now if so inclined. For that reason alone I would not purchase this reciever at the present time. I have not listened to a 6.1 DD setup as of yet but i'm sure in the future you will be able to hear the difference. But right now there is a limited amount of material that has 6.1 capability, the most notable being the new Terminator 2 box set that has 6.1 and I would love to hear. The 5/7/8 channel stereo is also a nice feature that is lacking on this unit. It fills the room a whole lot nicer, this unit has that ability when using DSP's but it's not the same. The musical DSP's are horrible in my opinon where as the movie ones are excellent especially the Dolby Pro Logic Enchanced and the Dobly Digital Enchanced. The problem is that the DSP's are using 24-bit processors which are outdated. The last complaint is on the remote itself. While it is not as bad as the previous posts make out to be it is lacking in the ergonomic perspecitive and is awkward to hold. But it is a multi-fuction learning remote and that says something, it controls my entire system flawlessly.

Now for some good points. For now it processes Dolby Digital better than any other reciever I have heard, and the same with Dolby Pro Logic. It also is a very musical reciever and when using it in just Stereo mode with the front 2 speaker and the sub it sounds magnificent. It hits the highs better than any reciever I have heard to date. The problem is I haven't heard the next generation of Yamaha's as a yet and I am sure they will be far cleaner with updated processors. This reciever has seen it's days and was the best bang for the buck reciever you could purchase when I bought it 5 1/2 months ago. I have since just sold it on Ebay to someone for the amount it is going to cost me to buy the Denon 3801 from Ecost.com with money to spare and I thank that sole because I got a free upgrade. I am still going to give this unit a perfect review because it has been discontinued and will be no longer availble when stores run out of stock. This was the best of it's time and I am now on the hunt for it's predicesor.

My Home Theater includes
No reciever as of year

Klipsh RC-3 Center Channel
Klipsh RS-3 Rear Speakers
KSW-15 Sub Woofer
All Monster Cable Connect
JVC VCR I forget the model number
T.V. that is to pathetic to name but i'm getting a Sony Vega soon.

Strength:

great looking receiver, nice satin black finish, very good display with clear large amber colored text, extrenely good construction, very clean and crisp stereosound, awesome and exceptionally powerful homecinemasound, superb dolby prologic.

Weakness:

is very criticical on the speakers, remote control a bit too large, very heavy box, stereosound a little bit dull, sound can be a bit cold, but not agressive.

This receiver is an absolute king of the world in home cinema. It's bigger brother (A1) is a bit more sophisticated, but also a lot more expensive. For this money, I think no better receiver can be bought. Why?

Most people love the RX2095RDS, but there are some people that like other amplifiers more because of more musical and/ or warmer performance. It is certainly true that this receiver cab sound a bit dull in stereo mode and not too warm either, but there are good things about this receiver that makes everything alright, I'm sure of it.
This receiver has such a good construction that it must last longer than most other receivers. It makes the black boc also heavier than others, but that's not really important. There's always a solution to that problem.
It looks perfect. Actually I've fallen in love with it's looks, so mighty.
The remote control looks good too, but it's quite large. It's capable of learning to operate other units, but still it isn't very handy to use it. Good thing is the backlight of the keys on it.
Of course, the field in which it outperforms other receivers that cost even twice as much (except for the DSP A1), is it's homecinema performance, which is staggering. When you listen to a dolby prologic mix, separation is so superb that you think yoy're listening to dolby digital. Briliant! Especially when you set the surrounds to 0dB, it's quite spectacular. Before I decided to go for the Yamaha, I listened to lots of other DD and DTS receivers or amplifiers, icluding Marantz, Kenwood, Denon, Onkyo and Harman Kardon, but no models of these where as good as the Yamaha RX2095RDS in dolby digital and DTS. It's like you're in a bigger room than it actually is. It has kind of an expansive delivery! Very very important to note here is that must choose your speakers extremely carefully, because it can sound less good when you choose the wrong ones. It can sound even a bit claustrophobic when you connect the wrong subwoofer: I would go for a REL. I also advise you to get floorstanding speakers for front and surround and especially a good, large centre speaker. This amplifier has huge power.
Another exeptional characteristic of the yamaha is DSP. Today, every receiver or amp has DSP modes, but you simply cannot compare to those of Yamaha's. They're really good. It's no use to describe them, because ypu just have to hear them, but I think they're great. When you are listening to a concert for example, it adds just the extra realistic ambience to the music that's normally not present in simple stereo (it uses surrounds too). Some DSP's can have a bit too much echo, though.
Concluding, I'm crazy about this receiver. It has so much to offer for the money that I can simply say that it's worth every penny.

Especially when you're a movie fanatic, go for it, you will love it!

Strength:

Most Yamaha products tend to be uncolored/too digital, if it's a bass guitar or sax or a receiver, but for a me that's just what I want.
Good Tuner and a great Remote once you figured it out.

Weakness:

No 96 Khz Decoder support for DVD Audio.
No digital eq/delay on Surround/Centre channels.

Candidates:
DSP-A1(no tuner)/DSP-A2/DSP-AX1(Too expensive)

When I bought it I used 4 Bose and 901's and a B&W Centre C600 S2(?).
And I had enough power for DTS.
Almost two month's ago I bougth 2 Infinity IRS Omega's (See Review) and I needed more power... No problem took the bridge out thru the main power amps and linked the pre-amp out to a QSC USA 900 (I used for my Bassguitar Rigg).
Perfect sound!!

Still looking for matching Surround and Centre.
(Candidate Kappa centre with EMIT Tweeter)

Use DVD-976 as CD/DVD.

It is very durable and provides awesome surround sound. Remote is a bit difficult to program and it not very attractive. Has a ton of features including multi-room, multi-input sound. Music would sound much better if it could be played using 5.1 surround sound.

I've only had this receiver for about a month, but I must say it is awesome. I've noticed many posts where people say that the subwoofer doesn't work in 2 channel stereo. Actually it does. You need to go to the menu settings, then speaker setting and choose "both" under the subwoofer option (the other options are SW and main). By doing this, the subwoofer will also play. You can also get the subwoofer to work in 2 channel mose by simply selecting the "small" setting for the main speakers.

Let me know if this works.

Great receiver!

Had this unit, and it is not worth it. If you like "EAR CANDY" youll love the Yamaja. I went with the Denon for a few hundred more and it kicks butt!!! It is not that the Denons are "BRIGHT" , its that the Yamaha lacks brightness,. Shoot, I thought I needed new speakers til I hooked up the Denon....The Denon Is Ultra-thx-ex certified, and puts yamaha in the dirt...
