Strength:

Depth of Sound Quality, Remote, Build Quality, Inputs

Weakness:

No crossover setting, lack of amplifier section for center rear speaker.

What a supurb piece of equipment. For two years I used the RX-V795, also a good receiver for those starting out with surround sound. The RX-V1000 provides all the inputs and outputs I need for a system of my size. The boost in power over the RX-V795 (100watts vs 85watts) is nice to have so that the dynamic range of DVD sound tracks have more impact.

Don't waste your time with a Sony... the sound isn't clean and their service centers are not interested in providing customer service. Dennon, Kenwood, and Onkyo all provide quality competing receivers with the same features but for more money.

This receiver plays very cleanly in stereo mode with all effects shut off. My rock, jazz, and classical CDs all sound supurb with excellent clarity. Rock has great impact, jazz sounds smooth, and my classical CDs have a pure sound to them I have never heard before.

This receiver really shines when playing DVDs. The dynamic impact of louds and softs is amazing. The DSP modes are truly appropriate for a theater experience. When using the DTS Matrix 6.1 or Dolby ES 6.1 modes the sound totally surrounds you and immurses you in the movie. Playing movies such as the Matrix, Volcano, Independence Day, and Twister are truly theater experiences.

There is absolutely no need to spend $2,000 on a top-of-the line receiver when you can get everything you would need for a moderate size listening room in a piece of equipment like this. I noticed now that it can be purchased for as little as $666. It is truly a steal for what you get.

My system is in more of the low-end/reasonable range... and my speakers are older but reliable technology:

Panasonic PV-VS480 S-VHS
JVC VHS (4 year old model)
Pioneer DV-333 DVD
Pioneer PD-F1039 300+1 CD Changer
Sony TC-WE825 Tape Deck
Sony MDS-JE520 MiniDisc Player/Recorder
Monster Power Conditioner
Front Speakers: EPI Tower (EPI is long gone as a company)
Rear Speakers: Boston A60s (doesn't get any more traditional)
Center Speaker: Boston Acoustics
Subwoofer: Velodyne
Cabling: All Monster Cable (about $750 worth!!!)

Strength:

a lots of features, powerfull for music listening

Weakness:

Remote is too heavy, unbalance on weight, battery should be on the lower side, basic recording features defect?

I bought this receiver is based on the good reviews and have confident in Yamaha's quality. The unit is well build and good design, good quality. The powerfully output for music is great. I am still learning how to get used to it, it has so manay features, like remote learning, sound effect, I am a bit hesitate to touch it(I am afraid to go over the set up proceedure). The problem I have so far is the "Basic recording" feature, I connect my VCR to RXV-1000 per manual, and I hook up the video camera to the front input jacks(composite video jack), and the Rec Out/Zone 2 switch to V/AUX, start play back the video camera, and start recording with VCR, but nothing were recorded, I don't know what I did wrong, did any of you try out this feature? Would you like to share the experience? I am appreciated.
Thanks for your times.

Strength:

lots of DSP mode, programable RC, runs cool/quite, sounds very clean, simple to use

Weakness:

stereo sound is somewhat hollow and not as musical as other high ends.

Suprisingly, v1000 is only a hair better than the lower cost model v620. Not as musical as 1A1z but 1A1z is ~$2k.

With few comments stated, I found this is the best value/perfomance in the ~$600-1K range. I just love the simplicity of this A/V receiver inc. great RC, i/o, etc. Most DTS modes sound amazingly clean and there are lots of modes to play with (~40). I like the Nakamichi sound but the AV10 has fan noise while the 1A1z cost $600 more to upgrade to DTS from AC3. Since the fan noise from my Sony plasma TV is already anoying, my objective was a cool running amp w/o the fan.

Highly recommended!

Strength:

pre-outs,main in,6 channels, power, lots of ins/outs, price vs quality, 6 ch. input ( usefull for listening to surrond mixes)

Weakness:

just 2 spdif in no out, no zone 2 level ,no digital in to zone 2, no surround delays,

This unit is a real bargain! I paid less than my previous unit wich was a Adcom 740 processor only, and it has 5 amplifiers in it. Lots of nice features: AC-3,DTS-ES,Matrix 6.1, FX processors and a lot of in/out in different form: RCA analog, optical, co-axial (s/p dif) for audio, composite,S-VHS, NTSC for video. Sound is really good for the price, doesn't have the warmth and depth of more expensive pre/ power amps, but eh!, $1000 can. for that, it's a joke. It's a really good unit.Only small complaints : there is just 2 spdif ins, wich in my case is annoing because I have : digital cable, CD player and my computer that all have SPDIF only outputs and if I want to record on my computer or a DAT player, optical out only. I bought a Midiman CO2 ($100) wich converts 2 SPDIF to 2 optical or the other way around.
One other nice feature is the main in, wich by-passes the pre-amp . So you can use the stereo power amp for another use. My main speakers are JBL LSR25P and LSR12P active speakers , so I don't need these power amps. So I use these amps with the zone 2 out, to listen something else in another room, and since you have 2 speakers outputs,A and B, you can hook another pair in a third room! That's where my second complaint comes in: you can't control the level output of the zone 2. If you are like me , always with a soldering gun in your hand, you buy a line level stereo fader, a plastic box, 4 gold plated RCA connectors, et voilà! Or else , you'll have to buy a small mixer at Radio Shack ($60)
My other complaint is about the suround delays, the way my listening room is, my seating position is closer to the rear speakers , so I need 2ms of delay , but I can't with that unit. That is strange for that kind of product. It cause phase cancellation, the best way to hear that phenomenon is to put music, to 6 ch. stereo listening mode. Have a good listen at your usuall listening position, then move forward, lets say 1 foot, depending on your reference or your room, you'll probably hear more low-mids, since It's less affected by material in your room.
That is a really super unit for the price , I recommend it strongly.
The rest of my system:
2 JBL LSR25P as main
1 Jamo Concert center as front center
2 Infinity RS3000 as suround
1 Mordaunt-Short MS209C as rear center
1 JBL LSR12P as sub
1 Bryston 3B for the 2 centers
TV/ Video/ Digital cable/ DVD/ CD/ Tape deck/ Soundcraft audio console / Mac G4 with MOTU 2408 mk2 for my studio
I use my kit to listen to stereo or surround mixes (6 ch.input)

Strength:

Ver good at producing the soundfields.
Very realistic feeling when i hooked up the last channel with my old amp.
Remote with macros.

Weakness:

No lit up buttons on remote as on the bigger models - just flouroscent.
No 6th amp for center rear built in :o( and no amp sold for this either that i have found - i want on though so i can throw my old amp in to the bedroom.
I think that the amp should have been built in as on the new model RXV1200 - want it!!!

Running with my DV796 DVD it sounds awesome when running DTS, 6.1 and digital movies.
The moviesound in f.ex. Toystory 2 makes ure eyes as big as watermellons - things are actually boincing around in the room beside u. The rear center makes a difference in my opinion - the movements from left to right gets more controlled - no gap in between.
And still i havent bought my soon to be new speakers (probably JBL studio series).
Im currently running at a complete set of Genexxa budget speakers. So for the surround sound it works fine but for music id better get some new speakers and som new cables if i want the full monty out of my other stuff.
But for partymusic and loads of base these speakers can deliver loads of pressure - accordning to my neighbours.
The setup of Genxxas is as below-------------->
Main speakers: 2*10" woofer + 6.5" Mid and 3/4" tweeter.
Center: double 5 1/4" + 3/4" tweeter
Rear left & right: 1 piece of 6.5" woof/mid + 3/4" tweet
Rear center: 2 pieces of 6.5" woof/mid + 3/4" tweet.
Sub: Double 8" in a 2 chamber construciton playing pretty deep and pretty controlled for the price - but what can u excpect for a $300 (including 2 satelites).

Anyone that are looking for a set of Genexas then i can tell u that they are for sale right now.
U will get them cheap but u better live in Sweden since thats where i live.

lots of toys, center speaker eq.to name one ,pleanty of power

Weakness:

who ever wrote the manual should be summarily fired ! ,but with time and fumbling its not a problem. very bright for my applications but this may be particular to me, see below

I like this reciever and if you believe what you read here on this site, its very reliable over time. The only knock I could give it is for brightness. The Yamaha's take time to "burn in" as I understand it and this mellows them on the high end some. Sounds like alot of garbage to me but I'll have to wait and see. I have a Klipsch Reference setup and I must say, as of now its way to bright. These speakers (rf3s) hooked up to my other amp (2ch) sing and sound nothing short of spectacular. So , Im not going to pin the harshness on the Yamaha just yet,it could be that Klipsch and Yamaha werent meant to be. So performance wise I give rx-v1000 : power 5 of 5 , value 5 of 5 , toys 5 of 5 , sound 3 of 5 ,reliablility 5 of 5 (so far).....Im giving it 5 of 5 stars because in this price range $589.00 (including shipping) this is a fine reciever and hard to beat

I really wanted a HK avr7000 because of its sexy look and nice sound but poor reliablility stories scared me away ....

I purchased a complete system 5 months ago and went with the rx-v1000 and I am completely satisfied. I preferred a 5.1 system so the rear center wasn't a issue to me. This receiver does all I ask and always sounds great. I was considering a amp to boost power after hearing it in the store with a $7500 Krell amp. After getting it home, I think it sounds as good as the system at Ultimate Electronics. I went with a Pioneer 5 disc dvd monster cable with gold banana clips.(makes plugging in easy) For my front speakers I went with Definitive Technolgy BPL2002, center is CLR 2500 and rears are the Def Tech bp-x. Unbelieveable performance with the receiver and speakers combined! No need for a separate sub with theses speakers. 12" 250 watt powered sub in each tower, center has a 8" 200 watt powered sub. I was nervous about the sound thinking it wouldn't sound anything like the sample they had setup, but Ultimate has a 30 day return so I figured I had nothing to lose. Very happy customer!!!!

Strength:

Smooth sound, ease of use.

Weakness:

none thus far

I have owned this receiver for about two months now and I must say that I am more impressed with this unit every day! The RX-V1000 replaces my old Sony STR-DE925. The Yamaha simply thrashes the Sony receiver in every department. The sound is so much richer, nuances in movies are now apparent, my music CD’s sound so much better and my record collection now has a new lease on life!

I am impressed with the number of video and digital inputs this unit supports. I never thought I would have a use for s-video switching; how wrong was I! With the simple push of a button I can jump from TV cable -> VCR -> Satellite -> DVD. Wow! All without changing the video input on the television... revolutionary for me.

The remote took a bit to get use to, I know many have mentioned this but I really don't spend too much time listening to the remote.

All in all this receiver is a fantastic deal. I would and have recommened this unit to my friends. Yamaha produced a winner with this unit. I hope for their sakes the replacement stands up to the task.

Thanks for reading my review

Strength:

High flexibility and conductivity. Yamaha name and quality

Weakness:

Not THX certified

This past summer I upgraded every component in my home theater, so naturally I bought a new receiver. After some research and some careful consideration I chose the RX-V1000 as an upgrade over my RX-V595. I have found that Yamaha quality is among the best and after owning the RX-V1000 for several months now I can attest that the tradition continues.

The first thing that caught my eye on this unit was the back panel. I was very pleasantly surprised when I scoured over all the connection possibilities. Optical, Coaxial, Component, S video you name it, the RX-V1000 has all the latest A/V connections to compliment the standard analog audio and composite video RCA terminals. This goes for input and output. All this gives you great flexibility when hooking up your system, and allows for expandability, something I have found to be very important. This was one of the largest selling features, and unless some major advances are made the connections provided should last you quite a while.

The styling on this unit much better then what I have seen on earlier Yamaha models, due mainly to a panel on the front that conceals some inputs, recording modes and other setup features. This allows for a less cluttered front panel that is more pleasing to the eye. The visual display is also different from what I have seen in the past from Yamaha. Showing more signs of a dot matrix style display, I have found that it looks much better and is more useful then previous displays. Yamaha has effectively cleaned up the front panel making it look better while at the same time adding a degree of usefulness and easier operation.

Compared to my RX-V595 Yamaha has added some DSP programs which I have found useful. My favorite out of the bunch is the entertainment mode, which allows for 6-channel playback and a game mode to simulate surround sound while playing video games. There were also additions in the theater programs which I have found to be more distinctive then earlier programs. All in all, when used correctly can add quite a bit to the audio experience.

Dolby Digital and DTS decoders come with the unit assuring you that you have access to the very best that can be found in audio soundtracks. These two decoders also allow decoding of Dolby Digital 6.1 Matrix and DTS ES for the highest quality avaiable from the two formats. The back panel offers a connection to a 6-channel input to give you the ability to connect an external decoder for any future formats.

Speaker connection is also optimal in my opinion. All front main A/B terminals as well as center, rear center, and rear surround terminals are “screw type” assuring me the best possible speaker connection can be made. As mentioned in the previous sentence, the RX-V1000 allows for a rear center channel speaker for those of you that demand high audio performance. This again supports the high conductivity options of this unit.

Surprisingly, the supplied remote is of some use to me. As a general rule I detest Yamaha remotes, but I found that the remote that comes with the RX-V1000 to be an exception. It seems to be laid out in somewhat of a logical manner and is a good size. This remote supports macros functions though I have not made use of them as of yet. The flexibility of the unit apparently extends all the way to the remote by means of including a learning remote allowing you to program what buttons you want from the original remote.

I have also found that this unit is slightly easier to use then other models. A leading contributor in this aspect is the presence of OSD (on screen display). Allowing you to actually see graphically what you are doing in set up proves to be a plus and can help you out quite a bit while changing settings. The only restriction of this feature is that you must run an S Video cable from the unit to your TV monitor. The manual that comes with the unit seems to be a bit more useful as well, at least compared to my RX-V595. Though, much thicker, it is easy to find what you are looking for.

This is a truly amazing unit. Granted there is much better out there, but they also come with a price. The RX-V1000 is jam packed with features that will keep your home theater system at the top of the game for some time to come. You also get the assurance of purchasing a good product in the name of Yamaha. Though it may be more receiver then some need, unless you have an amazing home theater system, it shouldn’t fall short of what you need. Plenty of power, features, and performance, the RX-V1000 delivers a punch you won’t soon forget.
