Crash Test Dummies that can't use the remote, what's wrong with you people, I've had the R-V905 for a year now and I just love it. It is the 5th receiver I've owned in two years, but this one is definitely a keeper. For the money you're paying, you can't go wrong, you get lots of power for an average room (house, not apartment), enough DSP modes to satisfy your musical/theatrical taste, heck, they even threw in a DVD decoder for you vatos. Now the remote, Que paso?, if you find it difficult to use it, let me ask you a question, do you know what year this is?

Strength:

The sound quality of this unit is amazing. The consistency and precise sound is mind-blowing. Very simple to use and easy on the less educated audio person.

Weakness:

It does not come with DTS.

To sum it up, this is the best reciever for the money. I have never once regretted this item. It's a must hear, see, and buy. Anyone wanting to save a dollar but get the sound quality and quantity, this should be a consideration. This reciever has many options while being simple.

I recently bought this receiver for $375, and am quite satisfied. It should be noted that this model is identical to the RX-V595. It would be nice to have a few more bells and whistles, like S-video output, but for the money I think it is quite adequate. Very clean sound, and plenty of power for most people. I do not care for the remote, however. It is too narrow, and the buttons are very small and hard to read. It also has limited functions for other equipment. I'd give the remote 2 stars. The reciever itself I'll give four stars for the money.

Great buy for a receiver, but the thing inverts phase!
I just bought this version of the identical RX-V595 receiver, and I gotta say, at first I was a bit disappointed: the bass was really lacking compared to my old Rotel amplification.

Then I tried something: I set up an analog source into one channel each on the Yamaha and the Rotel. One speaker, therefore, was driven by each recevier/amp.

I immediately noticed that the sound was 180 deg. out of phase! Sure enough, when I rewired the Yamaha with reversed speaker connections, the bass was back! It only makes sense: if a bass drum is kicked, the speaker should push the driver out just as the drum vibrates out, and vice versa, etc.

So, my request to you is to buy this thing (I got it at San Francisco Video Only for $360) and play with reversing the polarity on all speaker connections. If mine's any indication, the phase is reversed on yours too!

Tim

Well, contrary to the previous guy's post, I think this is a great receiver. I traded up from a Technics and I couldn't be more pleased. I bought it from Crutchfield for $399, so it was an excellent deal -- the best for the money, in my opinion. It sounds great; I don't know all the fancy terminology to describe sounds because I'm just an enthusiast and not an audiophile, but compared to my old receivers, this one seems to offer the best clear, powerful sound. The front panel layout seems fine to me, and I don't have a major problem with the remote. Sure, it could've been better (lighted display would have been nice) and the dial takes some time to get used to, but the glow in the dark really does work, and the "universality" works pretty well too.
Crutchfield offers a 30-day guarantee, but I think I'll keep this. I am now a converted Yamaha fan.

In my everending quest to find the best AV Reciever for the money I forked out $499. for this Yamaha. After trying Sony and Pioneer I thought the Yamaha would be the best "Natural Sound" choice. My previous AV Reciever was a Yamaha. The 905's sound quality was not even as good as my 10 year old Yamaha.Confusing controls, and a Real Bad Remote.I hate glow in the dark remotes that don't really work. And how about the font size on the remote! Is it size 6? Not a bad reciever, but should do a good job at devaluing the Yamaha name.

I just purchased this reciever a few days ago and I'm really pleased with this model. I was conparing this with the Denon AVR-1700 and the H/K Avr-55. Overall I think that this is the best unit because of the price. They were all equal in power and features, but for the money ($400), I felt that it was not worth the extra 100 dollars to go with the Denon (only thing that the denon has that the Yamaha does not is on screen disp., but you wouldn't see it if you were watching a DVD because neither reciever supports s-switching). The audio reproduction is very crisp and smooth, I have it hooked up to a pair of MTX speakers and it sounds beautiful. More than ample power with no distortion. The remote is pretty nice, but nothing fancy(glow in the dark buttons are nice though). I'm really looking foward to hooking this up to a DVD player to test out the Dolby Digital.Overall I would give this a 4.

Excellent buy - the Yamaha R-V905 (identical to RX-V595) Dolby Digital AV Receiver @ $406 / 2-day Fed Shipped @ OneCall website - an Authorized Yamaha Mail-order Dealer (http://www.onecall.com/) For some (NOT ME) no SVGA input/outputs.
Check out Yamaha's Website for more details @: http://www.yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/DsplyModel/?gAVR00010R-V905
(HIGHLIGHTS)
DISCRETE POWER TRANSISTORS - Discrete power transistors rather than IC chips are used in the amplifier section to provide the cleanest sound possible. The amp delivers 70 watts to all five channels.

6-CHANNEL INPUTS FOR EXTERNAL DECODER* - The R-V905's rear panel has input jacks to accommodate an external 6-channel decoder. So the receiver is ready for any other 5.1 channel format, should one be developed.

TWO DIGITAL INPUTS* - The R-V905 can accommodate two digital sources DVD/LD and CD. The DVD/LD input has both optical and coaxial digital connections.

AUTO SOUND DECODER - The R-V905 senses a Dolby Digital signal and will automatically switch the receiver to that mode when the signal is detected.

NEW YAMAHA UNIVERSAL REMOTE CONTROL - The advanced remote control with the R-V905 has preset codes for most brands of VCRs, TVs, etc.

======
I disagree with Tao Wu - absolutely NO HISS from my 'sweet spot' sitting location (9' away Center Channel in a 20 x 30 room). Maybe, if you put your ear ON THE SPEAKER GRILL, . . .and your Volume control is @ the Dolby Digital REFERENCE location, slightly above #28 for me and no source playing ON from the DVD/LD input (paused) - . . .even then, absolutely NO HISS from my 'sweet spot' sitting location.

Also, I LOVE the REMOTE - I've programmed it for my DVD Player, 35" Toshiba & Panasonic HI-FI VCR Player! I can adjust speaker levels and turn-off the LFE Sub-woofer, on the fly for low level late night music/TV listening! When I first got my Yammie, for the next few days, my kids and friends thought the Remote looked like something from Star Wars (Light saber?)!!

5 - speakers/stars >> "Highly recommended!!!" <<
