Strength:

Excellent Dolby Digital and DTS, Music is only as good as the recording quality (if it was recorded like crap and mixed like crap it's going to sound like crap on this receiver!)

Weakness:

S-Video Switching

A couple things I have learned in my year of using the 1105 are as follows:

A. Musical reproduction is only as good as the quality of the recordings you feed into it (true with any receiver but more so with this receiver). This receiver reviels the true colors of recordings. In this respect it is very neutral.

B. It must be carefully matched with components (speakers, CD player) so as to get the right tonal balance. Again in this repect it is very neutral. If your speakers tend to be bright then thats whats going to come across. Ditto for the CD player. If you go out and buy bright speakers and a bright CD player and then hook it up to a neutral receiver what do you think is going to come across? THE HIGHS!!! It's not rocket science!!!!

I'm giving it five stars!!!!!

Oh, by the way (to the moron below me) PIONEER ELITE IS GOOD.........FOR ME TO POOP ON!!

Strength:

power, control, music reproduction, clarity,

Weakness:

dts stays triggered until you switch source
rotary source knob on remote

The Yamaha RV-1105 is an awesome buy. It has excellent sound reproduction, clarity, power, and control. If you're into home theater and are looking for an above than average reciever, than the RV-1105 is the one! I have three digital devices connected to it, including pioneer dvd, rca satelite dish, and pioneer 300 changer. The logo on the unit(natural sound) is an understatement. I also have polk 5 channel surround speakers and velodyne servo 12.

Strength:

Good price point, many features and perks found on more expensive heads. GREAT SOUND REPRODUCTION, Stayes cool under heavy fire.

Weakness:

None that I cna tell. SO FAR!

Have had serveral Receivers in the past and none of them have had or can compare to this one! AWESOME! Power clean and responsive to the speakers that I have (JBL G500's for the front, JBL SVACenter, JBL HP's 1'st set of Floor side fills and a set of KLH 911B for celling mount rears & Cerwin Vega HT-S12S Subwoofer) This thing doesnt even get close to being heated.
Being a Semi-professional Muscian I can tell the difference in what sounds good and what blows as far as reproduction, having been in a few Studios in my time and can tell the diff between good reproduction and cheese and this unit cuts through it all.
Remember that almost any head unit will only sound as good as the equipment your pushing sound through this one can make a big diff if your pushing it through semi-good to grand speakers/wire. DSP's are clean and controllable, Outputs/Inputs are Ok,
For the price point this is a contender with products like high end Onkyos, Harmon K products, yes even Nakamichi units! ( in my opinion!!!) Have not had any of the problems that some others have had. (if any !) Many of my friends have the Sony935 and JVC (98 series) and they LOVE my Yamaha sound much better.
If you can't afford the BEST get a Yamaha, it's better than most of the best anyway!

I listened to many receivers over the course of the last month and a half. Denon, sony, onkyo, just to name a few. This is the only one out there at the price of $750 range that can come close to true audio expression! This monster has PLENTY of power to drive just about anything you can hook up to it. 85W all around hooked up to Polk RT55's in front and rear, and CS400 center and WOW! I have a 100W Paradigm powered sub, but with the bass extension feature, you can really hit some good bass for music and home theatre. I auditioned the titanic for my wife and kids last night and I have never experienced such clarity and disortion free listening. Even with hard wood floors and cathederal ceiling, this is a true winner. If DTS takes off, we are set!

Strength:

Low cost Dolby Digital/DTS receiver with clean, clear sound. Usable DSP modes. 5.1 channel line level input and preamp outputs.

Weakness:

No S-Video switching for DVD.

Got this open boxed Yamaha RV-1105 at Best Buy for $550.00. This receiver sounds so much better then my previous Technics Dolby Pro Surround receiver. It has a sweet laid back sound with useful DSP modes. The remote is not that bad once you get used to it, but, I wish it had DVD S-video switching capability. Overall, I am very satisfied with this receiver and will keep it until I purchase a full separates system. I was surprised to read that a previous reviewer said that the sound was too bright. I would suggest that he change the Impedance Selector switch to the 4 ohm setting (upper position).

Strength:

DSP's quality of sound

Weakness:

Remote, some codes are not in manual (DVD player)

This receiver is a quality unit. Its DSP modes are first rate as well as its 2 channel audio. I have been somewhat disappointed with the remote and the univeral codes given in the manual; some functionality is lost with some of my components. However these remote problems aside, I can find no fault with the receiver. I can absolutely say its head and shoulders above anything I have ever had and I am generally quite pleased. I have paradigm studio 60's with a M&K sub. The movies and cd's have never sounded better. For the money, you CAN'T go wrong. I got mine for $525 delivered.

Strength:

Clean, Clean, Clean Sound.... More power that needed and plenty of optical inputs(for me)

Weakness:

Can not figure out the on screen display hook-up??? Only 5.1 and not enough S-Video inputs

I have been completely happy with this receiver. Sure it could have a few upgrades, but it was top of the line at the time I bought it. Who knew 6.1,7.1, 8.1 etc... was coming next. I have enjoyed countless dvd movies with this reciever and have no complaints. I do wish the remote was learning and not programable, but once it's programed no more hassle. I have not used any super-audio cds yet, but watching movies like saving private ryan, gladiator on this receiver make me feel like I am out of place paying 8 bucks to go to the theater.
One last thing, anyone figured how to hook up the on screen display? Manual explains how it works, but does not explain how to connect.
Just to be like others I have to brag on my set-up:

RV-1105 yami $425.00
phillips dvd 165.00
sony 35"trintron 700.00 (big steal)
and got a free vcr and oak stereo cabinet
4 JBL HLS-810 69.00/pair brand new (huge steal)
JBL HLS-Center 35.00 purchased used
Infinity 12" sub 200.00
I also just got set-up recently with the dishnetwork receiver with optical out and S-video connection. Awesome.
It is almost like turning cable tv into dvd format. (Highly recomended)
Would love to buy some JBL studio series bookshelves if anyone knows of a good deal!!

Strength:

very clean dac's and excellent dts and dolby digital decoding, the cleanest I have heard!

Weakness:

no s-video input for dvd or anything except s-vhs? why???
also the cheap super cheap spring loaded plastic clip speaker terminals broke for the surround and center first time I used it !!! I never ever had this problem before on any brand!!!

This a/v reciever is well made except for the fact that its plastic cheap spring loaded speaker terminals in the back break the first time you connect the wires,no matter how gentle you are!

And no s-video connector for dvd/dish sattelite or anything else on the back or front? An s-video connector for vhs only? why??? Brain dead and cost cutting cheap engineeriing, thats why! I would of rather paid a little more and had Yamaha put s-video on all inputes! I did not really think of this at the time?!

Anyways its sound is excellent and its dac's are above Sony's or any one else for their price of under $1,500.
The surround and front amps are built well and produce clean sound over-all but lack the dynamic punch of seperates and normal stereo tracks sound thin.

If you can afford it, I recommend highly to get a seperate Yamaha amp to run the subwoofer channel.Or better yet seperate amps for all channels. This set-up blows away many movie theatres!

Other than a awkward remote and too small for most hands this a/v reciever is pretty excellent for DSP and DAC as well as pre-amp capabilities!!!.

Yamaha seems to be on top on this and no one can touch them in this department at any price!

"But please Yamaha re-engineer this one soon or Yamaha is going to look pretty stupid."
It's too late for me though I already bought it but it is not bad for the price!

Yamaha mx-600u and the cx-600u seperates pre-amp and amplifier, also acoustic research reciever and sherwoood reciever which do not even compare with Yamaha.

Strength:

DSP modes, Front S-Video Input, Decent Bulid

Weakness:

Remote, Lack of Binding Posts, Lack of DVD S-Video Input

Upgraded to DD reciever and found the Yamaha to be a nice HT reciever for the price. Unfortunately I have been disapointed with three things. First, the lack of a DVD svideo input is somewhat distressing. Also, the lack of binding posts seem to be a way of cutting corners, and finally, it does not perform all that well with 2 channel stereo tracks (although DTS cds sound great). Overall, a good reciever for HT but if given the chance I would probably buy a different reciever

Strength:

Very Clean sound & an excellent FM section.

Weakness:

Poor music reproduction, something lacks in the bass.Paint already wearing thin on remote after 6 months.

Upon hooking up and noticing kind of cheesy center channel connectors the first thing I played was some music I was familar with. I wished I had my old Onkyo back. Then after playing a DVD I thought I was satified. But to make a long story short, after listening for 6 months I am looking to sell it & get a Onkyo. There is just something missing that wasn't missing when I had the old Onkyo there. Otherwise a good receiver.
