Strength:

value, quality, clean sound,

Weakness:

have to use remote to turn off subwoofer and mains just to listen with headphones. its too bad with such a perfect reciever, they had to cheap out on connectors. cant use banana plugs for center channel and rears.

WANTED TO UPGRADE TO DOLBY DIGITAL SO I GOT SUCKERED INTO BUYING THE FUTURISTIC LOOKING KENWOOD 2080, NOW I HAVE A $430 DOLLAR PAPER WEIGHT AND KENWOOD WONT BACK UP THEIR WARRANTEE CAUSE THEY KNOW ITS A PIECE OF JUNK. THE KENWOOD WAS A DREAM COME TRUE SO IT THOUGHT. CHEAP AND LOADED WITH FEATURES YOUD NEVER FIND ON ANY RECIEVER COSTING LESS THAN $1200. AND FOR MOVIES IT DIDNT SOUND TO BAD IF IT WAS WORKING. FIRST ONE I BOUGHT FROM UBID ARRIVED DEAD ON ARRIVAL. THE SECOND ONE LASTED 4 MONTHS THEN FRIED 3/4 THE WAY TROUGH A MOVIE. FRUSTRATED, I WENT BACK TO A NAME I KNEW I COULD TRUST. THIS IS MY 3RD YAMMI AND ILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER BRAND (UNLESS THEY START PRODUCEING GARBAGE LIKE KENWOOD DOES). YOU CANT BEAT THE CLEAN SOUND. THE HIGHS AND THE DETAIL ARE BETTER THAN ANYTHING IVE HEARD. (ALMOST TOO GOOD) SOMETIMES I LONG FOR THE DEEP POUNDING BASS THAT OTHER RECIEVERS DELIVER. YAMAHA PRIDES ITSELF ON DETAIL. BUT SOMETIMES YOU DONT WANT SO MUCH DETAIL IN YOUR MUSIC, HOWEVER YOU DO WHEN IT COMES TO MOVIES AND THE 1105 WONT DISAPOINT. I MATCHED THIS UP WITH YAMAHA CENTER, MAINS, REARS AND AN AUDIO RESOURCE 16" SUBWOOFER AN ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW! SEVERAL TIMES DURING A MOVIE ILL TURN THE VOLUME DOWN SO THAT I CAN IDENTIFIE A NOISE THAT I THINK IS COMMING FROM SOMEWHERE IN MY HOUSE, WHEN IN FACT ITS PART OF THE MOVIE. I GET PARANOID SOMETIMES DURRING HORROR FLICKS. ITS JUST TOO REAL. IVE TEST DROVE DENON, PIONEER (JUNK), KENWOOD (JUNK), SHERWOOD, AND HARMON KARDON. NONE ARE AS CLEAN SOUNDING AS A YAMAHA, BUT YAMAHA NEEDS TO WORK ON GETTING US UP TO DATE ON CONNECTORS. WHY THE CHEESY BINDING POST CONNECTORS? AND WHATS UP WITH THIS REMOTE? ALL THOUGH ITS NOT NEARLY AS BAD AS THE LCD SCREEN CRAPOLA REMOTE FROM KENWOOD, THIS REMOTE REQUIRES YOU TO HAVE THE FINGERS OF A 5 YEAR OLD CHILD AND THE BRAIN POWER OF A PHD. WELL NOT REALLY. ONCE I LEARNED IT WASNT TO BAD. BUT WHEN IM LISTENING TO MUSIC IN THE DARK ON HEADPHONES AND I WANT TO ADJUST THE VOLUME I MAY END UP HITTING THE WRONG BUTTON. I PAID $449.00 FROM J AND R. (FOUND THEM ON THE INTERNET AND THEY BACK UP THEIR STUFF) THIS WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW, NOT A REFERB. HOPE THIS GIVES YOU A GUIDLINE AS TO WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT TO PAY. I COULDNT FIND IT ANY CHEAPER BELIEVE ME I TRIED. I FEEL PRETTY CONFIDENT THAT I WILL HAVE A LONG RELATIONSHIP WITH THIS RECIEVER SINCE I HAVE HAD EXCEPTIONAL SATISFACTION WITH YAMAHA RECIEVERS IN THE PAST. FEATURE WISE FOR YOUR DOLLAR ITS RATHER PLAIN JANE, BUT THIS KIND OF QUALITY YOU CANT BUY FOR LESS. AND ISNT THAT WHAT COUNTS? THE BEST SOUND FOR THE LEAST AMOUNT OF MONEY, MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THE CONNECTORS. THIS KIND OF CHEESE DOSNT BELONG ON SUCH A WONDERFULL QUALITY RECIEVER.

Strength:

great sound

Weakness:

no s video in for DVD

Wanted to upgrade from Sony prologic receiver for DVD. Lack of S video not major as easily able to direct connect to monitor, but means unable to switch and will have to change cables if additional s source connected at later date. I reviewed other comments from this site and decided against Sony STR-DE935 as quality control seemed to crop up as frequent complaint. Likewise Pioneer VSX-D608 consistently felt to be underpowered. I did not test at stores a wouldn't come close to m setup or environment.Other units considered were too big for space intended. I had to read the manual to get subwoofer to work which is not a complaint just a reminder.
The sound is exceptional. Even my wife was impressed when I put on the Eagles concert which is the only DTS DVD I had. The sound fields are fun to play with but not essential. Unlike other reviewers I don't dislike the remote. It sure beats the remote from my prior receiver as it actually runs all the other units I have. The dial takes a little geting use to, but is a fair compromise in order to keep the remote size down. I don't run with all lights off so the lack of illumination is not a factor. I would have liked a few learning buttons as there is always 1 or 2 commands that do not seemed available on the usual preprogrammed universal remote.
I got the unit from J and R. They are advertising it for $449 but I did get it a little cheaper as I had gotten a lower quote elsewhere on line. I had actually ordered the Yamaha HTR 5150 first, but the original internet dealer(not J and R) were out and there subsequent offers left me a little leary. Unlike others my local Sears refused to meet the internet offer despite initially claiming they would. As they don't have a written policy on this it left no recourse but to take my business elsewhere.

Strength:

Clean power, very neutral, wonderful diversity on DSP modes

Weakness:

Does not quite have that "punch" in HT apps.

I got this reciever about a year ago (paid $595) and I still love the clarity of the sound. I have to agree with other reviewers, the Yamaha does faithfully reproduce any recordings fed into its circuits. You will be happy as long as your material was cleanly recorded. I found that the R-V1105 does not have that much of a dynamic range when it comes to home theater, but it sure can play loud! I do love the reciever's flexibility when it comes to seting the DSP modes and found the "DISCO" mode (when all the settings are set to the lowest values) does a great job in a four channel stereo set-up. I found this reciever fit well into my current set-up and would recomend it to anyone.

Here is a list of my gear:
Yamaha R-V1105
Paradigm Reference Studio 60 (Fronts)
Paradigm Reference Studio CC (Center)
Paradigm Reference Studio ADP (Surounds)
Velodyne HGS-12 (sub)
Pioneer DVD-414
Sony KP-61XBR300 (Rear Projection Hi-Def set)

Strength:

Good Power

Weakness:

Remote and Inputs

I am satisfied with this receiver as it has good power and great sound. I got it for a great deal because someone at Sears missigned it, got it for 399. I thought i would get used to the remote but it still drives me nuts, i don't like how it is so long and skinny and you have to use that wheel to switch between which device you operate. Would loved to have more digital inputs, and make them assignable too. The DSP's don't impress me much, I usually just listen to dolby digital or dts straight. Overall, not bad but will probably buy different brand next time.
