Strength:

Easy setup and configuration, Dolby ProLogic II. Flip down front panel is great because it provides a clean look up front but it still has a ton of things behind it. Including a S-Video in and optical digital audio in! Menu driven setup is wonderful and easy to use.

Weakness:

Remote, no back lit keys, like most av receivers the tuner is only OK. Power may be an issue but it has not been yet.

I have been using Yamaha AV receivers for a number of years now. I made my original purchase because I received a great deal on an open box and figured I would try it out. Now a number of years later, I am still using Yamaha. When I went shopping around this time, I decided to really research and look at number of different brands.. So, I looked at Yamaha, Onkyo, Denon, Marantz, Sony and Harman Kardon. All with units in the $700 - $1000 list price range. When it was all said and done, I still ended up with the Yamaha. For those who are not aware, this is the same unit as the RX-V1200 but the street price is generally a little less even though the list prices are the same. The price/performance is great, setup is very simple and the manual is pretty well written as far as manuals go. The remote is not the greatest in the world but I am using a Marantz RC5000i touch screen remote so it really does not matter. Dolby ProLogic II for 2 channel sources is awesome and the addition of DTS ES Discrete and Matrix 6.1 is great. The power on this one is rated at 80 watts per channel which is less than some others but I am driving 6 channels of fairly large Polk Audio speakers and it has not been an issue.

Strength:

Looks, LCD display, Hookups on the back, The flexibility you get in each of the surround modes to change every little detail about it. The center channel has it''s own built in eq to adjust, On screen display, too many more to list but I think I''ve listed most of my favorite ones.

Weakness:

Remote not back lit. Only the lcd on it is. No pre outs on it.

I''ve tryied quite a few different Yamahas in a short time looking for that something that really stood out. The last reciever I had was the 5280. Not bad, but only Matrixed 6.1. Then this one came along. Instantly I was excited. Pro Logic II, DTS ES, ect..The under rated 80watts holds its own when listening to Movies, music. Although I do believe in THX. I also have to agree that you do pay alot for that logo. As far as Yamaha is concerned I''m glad their staying out of that game. Their receivers step up and preform. THX EX is only a Matrixed rear back/surround anyway.Unlike DTS ES, which is a dedicated rear center channel. Just running this reciever on matrixed will reproduce the EX just fine. The Pro Logic II is great as well. When I''m watching my regualr stereo/dolby surround tv programs. The rears really come alive. When the studio audience is laughing/clapping, you feel like your in the center of it all. It''s really a great receiver all around. I''d recomend it to anybody in the market for a new receiver. Take it for a test drive.

Bang for your Buck...You can not beat it! Worth 4 times what I paid for it!

Weakness:

I spent over 6 months reviewing different products before I began purchasing components for my new home system. I decided that I would go all Yamaha for the stereo components due to their superior quality and performance and then match them up with an excellent grouping of speakers. I struggled with the decision of going with the RX-V1, RX-V3000 or the RX-V1200 when I found the HTR-5490. Now I can put all that extra money I saved towards my speakers. Why pay $899.00 for the RX-V1200 when the HTR-5490 is available? This is a beautiful piece of equipment! Yamaha now get to work on your DVD players.

Strength:

Strong remote control signal, 6-channel stereo, true powered 6th channel, On-screen display..etc.

Weakness:

no Dobly Digital RF input for my LaserDisc player, but who cares about LaserDisc now? I am now using it to play music CD, and with Pro-Logic II, LaserDisc still sounds great.

I was looking for a RX-V1200, but found that HTR-5490 is almost $100 cheaper. Since they are actually the same product, and I won''t be able to use the second zone function, so I went with the HTR-5490. It took me some time to set it up, but it sounds great from the very first time I turned it on. I like the bass, the clarity, and the power. Lots of A/V inputs. DTS, DD, 6-channel stereo works great! Both the unit and the remote look professional. I have the unit faced side-way, and I used to extend my arms to point my remote control on my old Pioneer, but with Yamaha, the remote control signal is so strong, and I can control it from anywhere in the room without pointing at it. I don''t have the 6th speaker connected, but I am sure it will sound even better if I do. With s-video and component switching, DTS-ES, Pro-logic II, Neo-6... etc, this unit will last a long time before I need to upgrade it again.

Strength:

Great Sound Ton of processing modes 6.1 sound capabilities Large amount of connections for components

Weakness:

Weak remote

The Yamaha HTR-5490 is an amazing receiver at a fairly affordable price. It has an array of useful features and processing modes that include DTS-ES, DTS Neo6, and Dolby ProLogicII. It also comes with standard DTS and Dolby Digital decoding as one would expect. The amount of connections on the back of the receiver are staggering. I don''t think I will ever fill them all. Finally, and most importantly, is sound quality. The Yamaha produces wonderful sound with rich clarity. Paired with my JBL Studio Series speakers sound is crisp and clear even at extremely high volumes. The only reservation I would have about this receiver would be its slightly non-user friendly remote. However this can be easily fixed with a good learning universal remote. If you are in the market for a new receiver, I have no reservations about recommending the Yamaha HTR-5490 receiver.
