    Strength:

Simple - powerful for the average UK size home

    Weakness:

    None that I've found yet

You might wonder why someone in the UK would want to purchase this - well I've saved myself the equivalent of $150 by buying this in the USA and taking it back home. Downside is in the UK we have RDS as standard - but what the heck I've only bought it fopr home movies anyhow.
Setup for those interested front speakers - Missions 701, Centre Bose, rears Yamaha, sub base Yamaha with Sony 29" Tv, but also a Sony projector for watching the movies in my front room. Great machine certainly recommend it.

    Strength:

Clean sound, Great value, Power to spare

    Weakness:

    none

I'm a college student who has just set up a surround system in my dorm room, and this reciever gives me all the power I need and then some. At first I was worried about settling for 70 watts per channel vs. the 100 offered in the HTR-5250, But i can now say that fears were unfounded. Turning the volume anywhere past 10 o'clock is so loud that it's practically painful, but I can't detect any distortion when I do. The only way that someone would need more power was if they were either hard of hearing or had a room a significantly larger than mine to work with.

I still need a center channel speaker, but the phantom center mode which splits the signal between the left/right speaker seems to work for now. The only thing that i have noticed is watching DVD's with loud effects it's rather hard to distinguish some of the speech without turning it up higher than I like. Listening position is also more important without a center channel, but it's tolerable for now.

It also has plenty of DSP modes to play with, and I especially like the Rock Concert and Concert Hall modes for listening to CD's. There are enough digital inputs, but I currently have all of the optical and S-video jacks allocated between my computer and DVD player, so this is perfect for now, but anyone who has more than 2 digital sources should consider the 5250.

I think that i'm going to be enjoying this reciever for a while, and i highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a DD/DTS reciever who doesen't feel like spending a mint, but appreciates great sound.

I'm very happy with this product. Wanted to let you all know that Sears will match the lowest price (currently $299.00 at MoreAudioVideo.com). Just bring a copy of the web page showing the online price and Sears will match it, no questions asked. I learned this from the many reviews posted here for this item. I noticed most of you bought the received at Sears because of their price matching policy. So, if you are in the market for this receiver (or any other that Sears offers), surf online for the lowest price and head to Sears. I used to hate Sears. But not anymore.

The rating I'm posting is not only for the receiver, but for Sears also.

    Strength:

Excellent sound in stereo,Dolby Digital and DTS modes for a great price!

    Weakness:

    none so far

Before I purchased this Yamaha, I had an older Dobly Pro Logic Pioneer VSX 454 receiver which I thought was a great receiver. Since I had such good luck with the Pioneer, I was going to upgrade to the Digital world by purchasing the Pioneer VSX D409. Fortunately, I came to this site and starting researching entry-level receivers from all the name brand manufacturers. I stumbled across the Yamaha and was blown away! This is a great receiver! The sound quality is incredible and don't let the 70 watts of power fool you; this baby gets loud! My old Pioneer was rated at 110 watts but did not sound anywhere close to the Yamaha. I have wathced about 4 DVD movies with this Yamaha and the sound is very crisp and detailed. There is absolutely no hiss out of any speakers and my subwoofer is sounding 10 times better with this receiver. I am also impressed with how cool this receiver runs; I have all my equipment stacked together in a fairly small entertainment center, and this Yamaha is on the bottom of the stack. Yet, it has stayed cool even after hours of operation. I also appreciate how the remote is able to control my TV, DVD player, CD player, and VCR with ease. I could get into some more detailed features, but most of them have been covered by other reviewers. I would encourage anyone to buy this receiver; Yamaha quality at under $300 is incredible! ($279 at etronics.com)

    Strength:

Powerful! Nice remote, plenty of DSP modes.

    Weakness:

Again the volume knob doesnt have a light and there's no dB display.

I just bought this receiver a couple days ago and I'm very pleased. I'm new on the home audio scene but I knew I needed more power than the pioneer (80 watts X 5). I was reluctant to go with a 70 watt, but this baby kicks it. I'm afraid to go past halfway on volume on my temporary Yamaha NS-A738 speakers that came FREE with the receiver. Good deal I'd say.

    Strength:

Power output is way under rated, crisp clean sound. Great price!

    Weakness:

I hate the remote. It's a straight stick that you can't tell up from down on in the dark, especially since none of the buttons light or glow. No light on the Volume control. May totally destroy cheap speakers :)

When you pick it up to put it in the car, you realize that the 300 bucks you spent was worth it, just the weight of the thing told me it was good stuff. The power output is incredible. I bought it to replace a Sherwood RV-4050-
    R. The difference in sound quality was amazing!!!!!!!!!! Even with the DSP turned off, I heard things from my cd's (good and bad) that I'd never heard before. And movies....well the sherwood never had enough power to the rear for my tastes, but this receiver is more than enough. Sounds clean, plenty powerful, and can be had fairly cheap.

I've got it hooked to a pair of Infinity Reference 2000.2's an Optimus SW-12 sub and Optimus CS3-Pro Center channel (got em both for 50 bucks a while back), and a set of Bose 2.2's my wife bought me for my birthday one year. Even though the speakers are different brands etc, they blend very well. It may just be the room, but it sounds great to me :)

    Strength:

Everything about this is nice. Its very powerful. And the sound quality is extremely clear.

    Weakness:

NONE! WELL, my cd player skips because of how loud this GOES!

This is extremely clear. Its very powerful and has .04% distortion, that is very low. Would recommend to anyone looking for quality and a low priced receiver. Has several digital DSP effects.

This is a great product from Yamaha. This is my first receiver and so far it has treated me well. It has plenty of connections and also decodes DTS and DD. For the price, it is incredible.
It generates great sound if you're listening to DVD's or CDs. I'm very happy with this and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to have a ht system. Especially if you have to watch what you spend like I do.

I decided to upgrade to the 5240 because I wanted to take advantage of the DTS. After reading reviews and speaking to a lot of salesmen, I found that the 5240 was going to give me the most bang for the buck. So far I am pretty happy with it, overall, there are a few things that I am concerned with. I replaced my speakers and when I hooked them up, the left speaker didn't work. I reattached the cable to the old speaker to verify that it was a prob with the speaker but I found the old speaker didn't function either. After messing with it for about 2 hours, crawling under the house to check the wire, making sure it wasn't faulty, I got ready to throw the thing out the window. Instead, I decided to leave it alone until I got back from vacation. Well, I have nmo idea why, but after coming home and turning on the unit, everything worked fine. I have no clue why. The same thing had happened earlier with the digital playback on the DVD mode. It was only playing in analog. I tried everything, I even brought both the receiver and the DVD player back to the store, and they worked fine there. I hooked them up again exactly as I had them before and they worked. Oh well, at least they are working now. Other than those two things, I love the unit, now I need some good speakers. The ones I have just don't do it justice.
