Strength:

Clean Yamaha Power

Weakness:

not banana plug compatable with all channels

This reciever is by far the best I have ever used. It sounds so much better than my last Sony. The weird thing is that although my old Sony was rated at 110 watts per channel, the Yamaha seemingly has more power. I guess this is due to Sony fudging on their output.

This reciever sounds so clean in surround modes next to either of the two DD/DTS units I have used. The reason is that Sony(and others) rate their recievers in 2-channel mode only, but The Yamaha is really 70 x 5 @ 0.04 THD. That is clean sound, at least for under $1000. There are not as many bells and whistles as on many other recievers even in this price range, JVC may top that list, but Yamaha puts the money where it counts in the sound. After all isnt that what you buy a reciever for?

There are a few minor problems with this reciever though, most notably the lack of banana plug jacks for all channels. I would be willing to pay more for the ability to use banana plugs. There is also no digital imput for a CD player. I dont need one for my CD player but if the unit had a input, it would allow you to buy a low-end CD player and use the Yamaha's DAC instead of buing a higher priced CD player. The remote is not as bad as people say it is, I actually have come to like it. It is able to control most every function on my gear, but not everything. I guess that is what they sell seprate LCD learning remotes for huh? My only complaint with the remote is that the unique jog dial is not baacklit and you must switch back and forth between DVD/LD and DVD MENU to work your DVD player.

Overall this is a teriffic reciever. I would recomend this to anyone in a heartbeat. This is my first Yamaha, but not my last. I have already found a local dealer (no more sears) and am awaiting a Yamaha with DTS-ES to drob below the $1K mark.

MY SYSTEM-

Yamaha HTR5150 reciever
Marantz CD-6000OSE CD-player
JVC XV-511 DVD player
JVC AV-27D800 TV
JVC hifi VCR (older model)
NHT SuperOne speakers (front + rear)
NHT SuperCenter center channel speaker
NHT SubOne 250watt sub

All great except the DVD!!

This receiver is a very good deal. I'm not going to get into the gory details. There's plenty of that below. I will state that for the money, you really can't purchase a better sounding AV receiver with the same features.
