Strength:

sound, price

Weakness:

none worht mentioning

This was my first home theatre. I got some very good advice, and information from several websites. I was on a very tight budget so I narrowed my search to the Yamaha 5140, the Onkyo 474, or less expensive Kenwood or Pioneer products in order to get DTS. I still wasn't sure when I called J and R Music. They told me to look at the 40 or so DVD's I had, and none had DTS. Even now DTS DVD's are very few and far between. That made the choice easy. The Yamaha was on sale for $279. That was about $20 less than the Onkyo. I bought it and have not regretted it for one minute since. The sound is crisp and clean. Don't let anyone talk trash about the wattage either. If you live where there are noise ordinances, you will never get it past 1/4 unless you have very understanding neighbors. While watching the HEAT DVD last week, I had to turn it down for fear I would have a policeman on the porch. My house is fairly small, but I feel it's sound would fill a much larger space easily. I am no expert, but if you want a very clean high quality reciever, and you have a budget give this receiver a try. If you feel DTS is a must I am sure the 5150 has similar sound qualities as well, and would certainly be worth a look

Strength:

Slick appearance and much improved remote over last year (thank god)

Weakness:

Haven't even hooked it up yet but in the store I was extremely impressed.

This is actually the start of a review for this models predecessor (sp?), the 5240.
I just picked it up in Calgary at Soundsaround for $600 including 3 year ext. warr. and all taxes.
I was just curious if anyone has seen this model in stores yet and a price that it has been advertised at. It retailed for $598 CDN here but I'm sure to hear back of much cheaper online prices, I hope to get the price matched if I find something cheaper.

Either way, I'm tingling with excitement to get home and power this baby up...lol
I'll write later with more of an update on it's performance (although I'm sure that it won't be much different than the 5140). One thing for sure is the remote is a lot nicer, that silver dial one made me really angry...lol

Cheers

I don't want to throw off the great rating this amp has so I'll assume that it will be a 5 star in each, and change it if I need to later

Strength:

price, price, price. power, clean plwer

Weakness:

no post speaker cable outs for center channel. no dts

very, very nice unit for the price. Got it for $270, shipping included from PCMall. Nice clean power. Would like it if you control front channel volume from remote. The settings memory is very nice. Some of the surround modes are pretty cheasy and cloud the sound beyond listenability.
This is paired with a 31" GE TV, 2 Polk RT35's, 2 RT25's, the PSW250 sub, and the center PSC1751i. Runs all of these very well, and the mains are not that efficient. The remote is a little small. The unit never gets hot, unless you are practically deaf there's no need to go beyond the 10:30 position ever. Would be nice to see a lighted volume dial. FM tuner is a little weak.

Strength:

Price, sound quality (no hissing), ease of use/set-up, under-rated wattage, runs cool.

Weakness:

No DTS, or s-video switching, many tiny buttons on remote(hard to see in dim-lighting) No light on volume knob.

I bought this a few months ago after reading many of the reviews here. I must say I am very pleased. I don't think you can find a better sounding 5.1 receiver for under $300. My only regret is that I would have spent the extra $150 and gotten the 5150 with s-video switching and DTS. If those 2 things aren't important you can't go wrong with this unit. As for the low power rating of 60w per channel; don't be fooled this sucker rocks. I can't sit in my living room with it turned up more than a 3rd of the way. (Yamaha is definitely conservative when it comes to output.) If you want a quality inexpensive unit with clean 5.1 buy it. If you want a few more options as (I mentioned above) buy its bigger brother. Either way you wont be disappointed.

(As for the absence of a light on the power knob: a strip of glow-in the dark tape works pretty well.)
