I bought my Mk 1 Technics SA-EX300 receiver new in 1997 when it first came on the NZ market, they came together with a dedicated 5 speaker kit. The Mk 1 was rated at 5 x 40 watts rms a channel and this Mk 1 model was equipped with a rear mounted cooling fan.The SA-EX300 was rated by the UK Hi Fi and Video magazine as the best buy budget Pro Logic amplifier with a 9/10 mark in it`s October 1996 issue. I run Kef C30 front speakers`, Kef C20 rear speakers` together with a Technics centre speaker and a Pioneer 100 watt sub woofer and still continue to be very impressed with the clean and very impressive sound stage that this budget amplifier still continues to produce. It`s a pity that the Technics amplifier brand name has been replaced by the Panasonic brand name these days`.

I LOVE THIS RECEIVER! it meets all my needs and it can push out a lot more than 60 watts per channel im running 8 speakers on it and it is very loud! (PS: i does get hot so i mounted a computer fan on top of it and that keeps it very cool and running good! i got it for free cuz my neihbor was getting rid of it and he gave it to me for free!

Strength:

Great sound

Weakness:

overheats only if used for long periods in hot places like house parties but i use it for DJing so iam pushing it to the limit but it has worked miraces.all u need is a stero fan.and u can jus plug it in the back it has an outlet built in..

your gonna call me crazy but i have been useing this Technics SA EX140 reciever for DJing for the past 4 years.I have rackmounted crown amps but when i dont want to lug around a huge rackmout ive used this lil thing and have gotten SUPER results. it does overheat sometime but a lil fan on top fixes that no problem.

Strength:

Clear sound, awesome bass response, clear clean look, agjustable center/rear channel.

Weakness:

not digital, overload when hot.

Ok, at first I was extremely happy with the unit pumping out 60w of clear sound to my 55 hitachi stand alone speakers... now all of a sudden im getting "overload" messages and the receiver keeps powering off, i decided to test something out so i put a house fan beside the unit and now it runs fine, technics in future should put PCB mount fans in the back of their receivers for the long hall of audio users.

I bought this receiver a few years back for $260 CAN at Future shop. With the cheap, homeade speakers I had, it sounded a lot better than my portable boom-box.
I recently acquired some excellent, used, Mission 734 speakers which outperform my receiver. Before, when I heard distortion on my system, I figured it was due to bad wiring and my crummy speakers. Even though my new Mission speakers sound much better than the old ones, there is still a lot of distortion, especially on the surround channels. The only good aspects of this receiver are the A/V features which let you dub between two VCRs, etc.

With the terrible distortion, even at low volumes, I would not recommend this receiver to anyone.

Strength:

Very nice look, and good display. Supports a host of different modes considering its cheap price - stereo, 3 stereo, Pro Logic surround. Has phantom surround mode.

Weakness:

Only 60watts/chann (lowwers to 40watt for mains in surround mode). Sounds very strained when turned up in surround mode, and bass becomes a rumbling drone more than anything.

Serving as my introduction to audio of any sort, I am most pleased with it. Since then, having used both Sony and Kenwood equipment, I am very happy with my purchase.

It ran nicely with 8ohm speakers (technics) and 6ohm speakers (sony) both on the mains. This leads me to conclude it does not appear to have problems with less than 8ohms on either channel.

Surround is a nice feature, however I find the surrounds to be very under-powered. Rear sound is washy, indistinct, and more of a distraction (this when watching a movie). It may well have been my surround speakers fault on quality, but the amp certainly under-powers them.

You can adjust the center and surrounds by a margin of +/- 12dB.

A good buy for its price, with a full featured remote catering for channel test, adjust channel volumes, CD controls, tuning, etc.

I never listen to radio, so I cannot comment on such features.

The amp must be quite robust as it has been dropped, and the only signs are a dent on the lowwer-left front corner of the amp, and a volume control which scratches (may be dust related).

If you are interested in not too loud sound, and experimenting with a 3-stereo mode, this amp is for you. I would not recommend buying it for its Pro Logic surround sound capabilities. You probably wont end up using this feature.

Bought this amp about a mounth ago to use with my computer, and is is a lot better than first thought. I'm currently running a pair of Warfedale Modus cubes passive sub and it seems to crank out the bass with power to spare. Dose what I want it to do even though the power specs seem to be not that high. Overall highly recommend it for a home cimima starter amp.

Strength:

Very good price. I bought this piece just when Macy's was closing their electronics dept. 75% off, it cost me only $52.00. For the price, it is a good, though not great, performer. Dolby Pro Logic is good too.

Weakness:

In surround mode the amp tends to send mixed signals to the rear speakers. Let it cool down, and the rears sound OK. No Dolby Digital and no DTS. Too few watts per channel.

Overall a good, low cost alternative to better and more expensive equipment. Nontheless, a good performer at a modest cost.

Strength:

Very loud without distortion for 60 watts a channel. Withstands high heat without sound quality loss. Consistent.

Weakness:

Would be nice to have 100 watts a channel but still sounds great with only 60.

This product has seemed to get a bad rap, so I'm going to change that. This is an excellent receiver for the money. Need to use good speakers, but that really goes with any receiver. I use Bose speakers and this thing rocks. My friends can't believe it only runs 60 watts per channel. I even hooked up a un-powered sub and it now really rocks. Will be buying a power amplifier for my system but my friends thinks I'm crazy. They say it sounds awesome and is loud enough already. My one friend bought a $600 Yamaha receiver and wish he bought the Technics EX-300. My system sounds way better than his and I paid 1/5 what he did.
