Strength:

Good sound, cheap

Weakness:

Could be built better, runs hot

Howdy everybody! I certnaily am NOT an audiophile, more like a casual listener. One year ago I bought a system that is: Panasonic TV TX-36PG50, Panasonic DVD player DVD-RV41, Technics SA-DX850A/V receiver, five Technics bookshelf speakers SB-HTS250 and Technics SB-AS100 subwofer. This systemn sounds good when watching DVD's, it never gave me any problems. But it doesn't sound good in stereo mode. Recently I bough Cambridge Audio D500SE CD player, and stereo imaging became cleaner, more detailed, the music just became more exciting! Now it's time to buy a new pair of speakers. I can't decide between Infinity Primus 200, Kef Coda 70 and Wharfedale 8.2. Could anyone recommend me a speaker that would match Technics AV receiver and Cambridge cd player? I listen to all kinds of music, especially, rock/rock'n'roll from the 1950's-1970s.

Strength:

-Great value -Gets loud -Attractive

Weakness:

-Crappy remote -Bass needs work -Needs more optical inputs

When I bought my home theater, I was a student with a tight budget. I needed something that was loud, and could process Dolby Digital and DTS. Sadly, I didn't know about Dolby Pro Logic II yet, and I was let down to find out my receiver did not support it. I also own a Nintendo Gamecube, which makes use of DPLII in games, so beware if you own a Gamecube. However, this sucker gets loud, and does a good job with Dobly Digitial and DTS. It offers other sound modes to simulate different settings, but they mostly stink. This receiver offers other nice features such as easy setup and customization, and is pleasing to the eyes. Could use more than two optical inputs though. I'm still happy with this receiver a year later.

Strength:

bang for the buck, smooth looks, easy to set up and use, good power, good sound, lots of capabilities .

Weakness:

cheesy remote, no bass/treble control in SFC modes, have to get up and walk to it to switch between digital and analog inputs(may sound stupid but it gets annoying)

This is a very good reciever for the money. I take listening very seriously, however I am limited by budget so I went with the Technics 950. I chose this reciever because I had heard great things about it, it sounded great in the store, and my dad has a Technics stereo reciever from 1985. His is rated at 120 watts/channel, but I swear it's capable of putting out more than that (as it drives massive floor speakers and they rumble not only our house, but every house on the block), it still sounds good, and in 17 years has never given him any problems so I knew durability wouldn't be a question. I am using this reciever with Bose 301 series IV as the main speakers, Sony center channel, KLH satellites in the rear, and a 12" sony subwoofer. The 950 dishes out a good amount of power, especially for this price, but the bass could be a little stronger, however I think that also has to do with the Bose speakers. When I got the sub, the system really came to life, it sounds great for the money. It's easy to understand and operate, and also looks nice. Maybe I'm weird but I like stuff with big dials, and it's got 3 of them. I have to agree with everybody else, the controller is a piece. It doesn't work half the time, buttons are small, and the whole thing just feels cheap. The SFC sound modes are really nice. I like them especially for watching football games that aren't broadcast in surround sound, it sounds almost the same. The annoying thing about the SFC modes is, you can't udjust the trebel and bass controls, everything just sounds kind of flat. Overall, this is a fine product. If you are looking to put togather a not-too-expensive home theater system that will give u quality sound, I recommend checking it out.

Strength:

Clear display, nicely organized inside, easy to operate, nice clear highs, and deep bass with a subwoofer.

Weakness:

have to have a powered sub, remote sucks, no fan!!!!, what is that about???

I bought this yesterday, and i am impressed by it, although i am now going to build a monster of a powered sub, this receiver sounds good and looks nice, a little more power would have been nice, but for that price u cant go wrong, i am currently using an old pair of speakers and i am very impressed with this unit, along with it i have a Sansui SE-88 EQ (SUPER SWEET!) and a sony 5 disc dvd player, although power wise my neighbours Denon AVR-1802 kills this, he paid like $1200, i paid $300, so buy this and u wont be disappointed!!!!

Strength:

Price, Input switching, excellent remote, DTS and AC3 digital decoders. DVD audio analog inputs.

Weakness:

Wont make poor signals sound good. Its garbage in garbage out with this amp.

Ive had this reciever for a year and a half and its still chugging along. For a afordable(cheap) amp it works great. I have it hooked up to some Acustic Research HP speakers and they produce some clean crisp sounds. My input devices are: Starchice 401 5.1 sattelite rec, Pana RP31 DVD and a PS2 all hooked up Digitaly. I plan on upgradeing to a THX Ultra reciever next but I would hole heartedly recomend this unit to any body on a tight budget(recivers under $400).

Strength:

I dont own this receiver; actually I own an sa-ax7 receiver.

Weakness:

probably the remote and some of the bells and whistles.

I just have a Comment to make on all Technics receivers after 1997 except the two channel only models; they all have fans that switch on at higher volume levels so heat is not an issue anymore. Anybody who is worring about the heat does not play the receiver that loud; turn the volume up and see what happens. One last comment there are a few very cheap technics 5 channel receivers less than 100 watts per channel that dont have fans but they are rare.

Strength:

clean sound room to grow - several optical and coaxial inputs, speaker a/b option, turntable compatible, remote subwoofer level control Value - I got mine for $199 with 2 free yamaha bookshelf speakers!

Weakness:

remote control annoying on/off procedure when using remote No digital input button on the remote significant volume drop from tuner to television, also between analog and digital Its been 3 months and I still haven''t received my rebate

I really felt like this was a steal for a digital decoding receiver. I bought it due to the high rating given by consumer reports. it is my first receiver so I really didn''t know what all to expect, but I was impressed with the easy set up and features. The display is clear and easy to read and the sound is clean and powerful. The unit displays how many channels the TV show or movie your watching was recorded in (ie. 2 channel or 6 channel). You can also program the receiver with the distances from your chair to each speaker so the sound arrives to you at the same time. Cool! The remote control is the worst I''ve ever seen - the buttons are small and the labels are difficult to read in the dark or in a very light room. It is a universal remote but it is my least favorite one -- I would rather have several remotes laying around than have to mess with this one. Another shortcoming is that you have to get up to press a button on the unit to switch from analog to digital input this is not on the remote. This is a hassle with digital cable where only half of the channels are in true digital and the other half is analog. If I had a satellite TV receiver this would not be a problem because then all of the TV channels would be digital and I would not have to switch back and forth. Overall I am very impressed with this unit and would recommend it for those in this price bracket.

Strength:

Visably soft, sound, power, multiple connections (optical, etc), quick set up, quiet, Brand Name

Weakness:

Bigger digital display

DX-950 is great value for the price. Have upgraded from a Philips-DD and I can''''t begin to describe the difference. My previous unit did not have the power nor DTS capabilities. Had been looking to upgrade for a little while and had my heart set on a JVC model to which I could not find when I attempted to test. I ran into the 1050 initially which had the same availability problem (most stores have display model as another reviewer found out). This then brought me to the 950 which I then compared to a Yamaha. I was not looking to break the bank, I just like my DVD''''s to sound great!!! Below you will find my results. 1. Easy set up if you are familiar w/ process. All receivers have same basic principle, just have to read directions. 2. Not much technically as far as outside, which is great. The technical stuff is inside which we shouldn''''t have to worry about anyway. This makes unit visiably easy to understand. The less buttons the better. 3. Remote is good size and easy to read. 4. Unit is quiet and from what I''''ve been observing, no problem w/ heat as some reviews have stated. Although I do have it on top of my wall unit with good airflow. Any electronic equipment will heat up, just give it room to breath. 5. Use mainly for DVD''''s and some tuner. Have a Sony pns300 DVD player optically to the 950 w/ a 75wt woofer (Philipps)on pre out and I now feel like the walls in my bonus room will crack and fall (I recommend Jurassic P 3). Cannot really tell difference between DD and DTS (must be a personal thing). 6. Would improve on front display, needs to be bigger. The little blue MOSFET light would be nice to (ha!! ha!!, give me a break). I have not yet found anything really negative to say, I mean let''''s face it, how technical do we really have to be about all this, we are all looking for better sound which this unit definitaly provides. 7. Final analysis, you do not have to spend life savings!! This is not 1950!! The DX950 is a great value for the money. If your looking for a middle of the line rec''''r that''''s easy to understand w/ great sound and power, this is the unit for you.
