Strength:

Plenty of power, nice sound quality, good options.

Weakness:

No S-video inputs, no coaxial inputs.

Ok, i have no clue what the previous reviewers are talking about. Yes, it does get hot but no where near the point where i would burn my hand or any equipment near the receier. I literally leave this receiver on almost 24hours a day 7 days a week and i have no problem with heat dissipation problems. I am planning on upgrading to a marantz receiver but mainly because of options and sound quality. this receiver has plenty of power to run my two Polk RT55i speakers and two Infinity RS3000 speakers. I think this reciever was a great deal for the price, it offers plenty of options and has all the power i ever need.

Strength:

DTS and every other form of surround sound mode, most bang for the buck

Weakness:

Don''t leave any CDs or DVDs on top of this thing! It does get hot.

I shopped around for a A/V receiver for under $300 as my first surround sound receiver. After narrowing it down, I read the various reviews on this site and decided on the Technics SA-DX940. It has more than adequate power for practically any home theater application, at 100 watts per channel. With all speakers hooked up, except for a sub-woofer, it is a joy to watch and listen to DVDs. I think it is amazing this unit has DTS circuitry for the price. No problems with heat, really. Just don''t put another component directly on top and you should be fine. I recommend using standard size speakers(with 8-12 inch woofers) for front and rear and a center channel speaker with 4-6 inch speaker with tweeter, rather than mini-satellite speakers with a sub-woofer. This way you will also avoid having to set up the speaker size, distance, etc. on the speaker set up which is very difficult to do. My speakers are Front: ESS AMT4s, Rear: Klipsch KG 2.2, Center: KLH 911B. For the price, you can''t go wrong. I am pleased with it.

Strength:

Pounds for price. nice layout of controls (unlike 2002 with the ugly volume knob)

Weakness:

Heats up rather warm and quick. Wouldn''t recommend for use over 5 years.

I wasn''t sure about what type of receiver to buy when I first began looking. I knew I wanted something that could pound tunes. I also enjoy my movies at loud volumes, so I wanted something that gave me both at a reasonable price. This unit has been a temporary answer. I have encountered the heat problem, and have also had the amp blow. It was still under warranty so that was not a problem. It''s really only a temporary fix, so I would suggest this unit to anyone who plans on buying some serious equipment later on. For now, this remains "party material." Overall I am happy with it and enjoy some good loud music & movies.

I love this receiver, as I stated I found this thing in a pawn shop and picked it up because it has the optical inputs for my Playstation 2 so I though that it would work out great. The overall construction is great, I had to get it home from Las Vegas and I didn’t think UPS was going to get it home in one piece so I had to take it on 2 plane flights and through airport security. When I got it home I ripped the speakers off my Koss mini system and quickly blew them out so now I have the tweeters on the blown speakers and my 2 Sony xpl?d 12inch car subwoofers (yea I don’t have a car yet) hooked up to the thing (the neighbors hate me). I have experienced no problems with heat but I don’t think I will ever leave my receiver on when I’m not home. But for 120 bucks the value can’t be beat. Now if I can only find the manual and some surround sound speakers w/sub for cheep I’ll be set. If anyone can get the manual to me by .PDF file or any other way hit me up. Thanks!

Strength:

strangely, has enough power to power my 250 watt rms MTX Thunder 6000 8ohm sub to its max. Cystal clean and clear sound in DD and DTS when wired up properly. My doesnt blow!!!

Weakness:

Watch out for the hot top part of the receiver!

I have bougt my SADX 940 well over a year ago. I have read reviews and heard rumors and such going around about this receiver and others from technics/panasonic. I agree the receiver does heat up fare amount... enough that I burnt myself. The fan doesnt only go on a high volumes. It actually adjusts according to the power the receiver is using. I have a car subwoofer (MTX Thunder 6000 8ohm) plugged to it. And let me add with no external base enhancement devices. I have have it wired so that I run my MTX on the left channel and my fronts (vivid 10" towers) on the right channel. There for I use the balance switch to adjust the difference between the fronts and the Mtx. Now my Mtx is rated at 250 watts rms and my towers at atleast 100 each. plus I am running a 100 watt powerd sub. I have ran my sadx 940 at just past half volume (which is what it takes to run my mtx at full power) and my towers on the same time at full power on the right channel. I run my system like this for atleast the duration of a full cd every once in a while. Ask anyone and they''ll tell you, thats what called abusing somthing!. I also have a full surround system hooked up, which I unhook the mtx and wire everything up properly when watching movies. I have watched 3 movies one after another just below the speakers max, without letting the amp rest. I would call this abusing the amp aswell. I have left the amp on overnight (fell asleep). Which brings me to this conclusion. 1. maybe Technics/Panasonic makes faulty amps, and I just happen to get a good one, or 2. Everyone with a blown amp isnt hooking up their items rite resulting in in a blown amp.

Strength:

good sound, decent phono stage, lotsa inputs, line out that doesnt crap up signal(for headphone amp)

Weakness:

poor integrated headphone amp(but maybe I''m just spoiled by seperate amp)

I wrote a review a year ago when I first got this and now I suppose comes an update. You people complaining about heat are full of it. You have either bad units, or you are stacking other things on top of the reciever or something else. I listen to music at night. I sleep with music. I don''t sleep otherwise. So I listen to my reciever. I have left this thing on overnight probably 300days. 300 days for 7-8 hours at a time. No problem, ever. No smoke, no apartments burning down. Nothing. Maybe I just got a really great one. Who knows, who cares. I could have done better for the price I''m sure. Good sound. I''ve got a Denon DCM370 which sounds rich through it. I''ve got a Rega Planar 3 turntable which is way out of the Technics league but it still sounds great. No complaints here. When it dies, it dies. I''ll have enjoyed it immensely. I''ll go for something non-AV but that''s because I don''t have an AV system. I bought with intent but lost interest and just used for music. So, NO COMPLAINTS.

(thats for Jc, Audiophile from Washington State (10/12/00 5:58:24 PM and SA-DX940 too!))

Hah... The power button works very well, just has a logic... Always select first the input and THEN the power button (tuner+power turns on the 930). If you have another remotable Technics unit(s), then you can turn on these with this remote too! (I have an excellent AZ7 Technics deck, so TAPE, then red Power button turns the deck on...:)) ...and works the play, rew, fwd, stop button too!) AND: the AUDIO ON/OFF button of the remote control (top right...) turns all the remotable Technics units off simultaneously! That is very-very coool...

So, some words: i have the european version of the 930 (no lame sound field control, but no overheat too! no coax digital input, but optical for the dvd too!). And sorry for my bad english, i have never learned this language...:)))

And my dear guys: the owner's manual of 930 begins so:

CAUTION!
DO NOT INSTALL OR PLACE THIS UNIT IN A BOOKCASE, BUILT IN CABINET OR IN ANOTHER CONFINED SPACE IN ORDER TO KEEP WELL VENTILATED CONDITION. ENSURE THAT CURTAINS AND ANY OTHER MATERIALS DO NOT OBSTRUCT THE VENTILATION CONDITION...
DO NOT PLACE A TAPE DECK, CD, OR DVD PLAYER ON TOP OF THIS UNIT.
Hmm, what about low speaker impedance? (But the protection circuitry functions very well, so...)

And: Technics has two very-very good, nice-looking (european) web-sites at www.technics.co.uk and www.technics.de, see it! There are some high-end products, that do not sold in America and not have an american version...

Bye!!!

Strength:

Price, Price, Price!! Individual level controls from the remote. Has phono preamp (I guess this is rare in low to mediumend these days).

Weakness:

cheap clips for center, rear, and B speakers. a tad underpowered, no preamp for center or rear speakers.

I have had this only four days now. I have seen many reviews critical of the heat it produces. In light of this i placed it on top of my cabinet (instead of inside. I ran it for about 8 hours at 35% volume after initial hookup and it stayed warm, not at all hot. Perhaps if you push it harder or restrict ventilation it gets hotter?? I like the ease changing levels to each speaker from the remote. This is handy, especially upon initial setup. On of my rears is further from the listening area so this makes it easy to balance. The speaker connections are cheap on all but the mains, but hell, this receiver was a bargain. I think that this is a great entry level, budget DD system.
