Strength:

This is one beautiful receiver...hey, it matches my Philips widescreen tv. The sounds of the highs and lows are great. Attractive design and multiple options of setup.

Weakness:

Weak remote. Lows can be a little more solid however they're still sounding great through my sony 515's. Balancing can be quite a task if you're really into getting superior usage out of your product.

Great value, super attractive receiver. This sounds great with instrumental and rock...it's a multi purpose receiver that doesn't quit. It's got enough inputs to make me happy and plenty of power. Read what everyone else says...don't just by the name SONY or DENNON or ONKYO...what's in a name? If you're looking for sleek design and optimal power and friendliness...this is your reciever. It rocks.

Strength:

Excellent sound, tuner, digital processer & on 2 channel. Excellent build quality finish, Take II capacitors & transformer.

Weakness:

My other Technics Runs hot too, but not a problem. Just keep vents clear.

Technics just keeps on getting better. My SA-AX-7 sounds good, but this sounds high end. This picks up background sounds on tracks I have never heard before. In the Matrix scene with the psychic vist; I can now clearly hear jazz playing in the background scene as it was in theater.
In listening on my Sony MDR-V6 phones I can tell the term Pure Sound is not just ad hype. This is really hi-end quality at a bargain price. I can hardly wait for the next latest top end products to go on sale.

Weakness:

The remote is ugly. Runs hot. Does not accept 96khz digital inputs.

As noted in the Weakness Section it has some shortcomings, but the sound and performance more than makes up for these. The sound is better than any reciever that I have demoed so far. Very impressive power, hasn't come up short yet. I am using this reciever to power the JBL Studio Series. Awesome! I was looking at other speaker sets in the $1,000 - $2,000 range and was ready to buy a set of Phase Techs. Then I heard the JBL, they are a bargain and they had the best highs and lows out of the competition. Plus - the s38's sound great in stereo mode. Technics has done a great job on this reciever; only the remote needs to be redesigned.

Weakness:

Can get a little hot but, as I understand, that is not uncommon with higher level receivers.

This is a great receiver. I'm impressed with the sound quality and features. This is indeed a hardcore receiver with a high quality build(weighs near 30 pounds). I also like the color and the look of the receiver. Technics has done a good job with this one. I recommend it especially if you can get it a good price.

Strength:

Clean sound, powerful bass, very low noise level, great look, solid construction

Weakness:

Runs hot

This receiver is a great bargain. It is solid (no plastic knobs please etc.). Bass is powerful and clean. Highs are great too. Relatively easy to set up. Very quiet - you always hear the music even during quiet passages. It shines with DVD-Audio. I was originally considering Dennon 2801 or Onkyo. I'm glad I chose the Technics. It is cheaper and as good as Denon. The only thing I miss is 5 channel stereo but DVD-Audio/SACD will make it unnecessary soon.

Strength:

Everything for the price
Sound; features; the look
Easy to use, simple remote control

Weakness:

Nothing at all!

I love this reciver. I was lucky that I found this receiver selling new for $300 at J & R Music World. I saw that most places were selling this for $400 with MSRP of $800. I think I got a great deal for this excellent, mid-end reciever.
Compared with my Yamaha HTR-5140, these Technics were much better for Dolby Digital listening. I am able to customize the output volumes for rear, center and subwoofer speakers. With a correct and easy customization, I was able to get AMAZING sounds from my DVDs. Eventhough the set-up isn't hard, I wouldn't say it would be easy for an average consumer. I think the initial set-up of the receiver to get optimum sound is necessary. You will be missing a lot if you go with the factory settings.
What I notice in this receiver that impressed me was the clarity of sound output even at a high volume. In addition, I was amazed to see how much more sound details came out of my rear speakers. I recommend this over any other receivers in the $300 range.

Weakness:

lacks coaxial digital inputs!!

First off I must admit, Technics was loosing my faith in their capability of producing a clean sounding A/V receiver that could be comparible to today's mid to high priced home theatre equipment. At least until I picked up their new "Pure Sound Series" spec sheets from a local dealer. At first I thought a spec sheet is just a spec sheet and the true test would be to listen. While the spec sheet was pretty impressive, the listening test was superb!
All I can say at this point is...I am glad I gave them another chance. Don't pass-up Technics because of what you have heard or previously experienced, this time, they are on to something and for the lack of the coaxial inputs...the sound reproduction this unit has overwyas that small flaw.

This is to bring to the attention of those that have purchased an SA-DA10, the companion micro speakers also
from the Technics Pre Sound Collection, the SB-M01.

UNBELIEVABLE SOUND, a huge surprise from Technics, they
make a stunning visual contrast with the champagne color
of the SA-DA10--Finished in a high gloss, piano lacquer,
cherry/caramel finish--Original list, $1199.95, JandR
is selling them on closeout for $299 a pair!!

For anyone looking for some high end satellites or as speakers to 'compliment' the SA-DA10, give these a look and listen.

Strength:

Great stereo and digital, dts performance. Awesome looks.
Adequate power.

Weakness:

No coax input, no seperate pre-outs, runs a little hot (minor).

Let me start by saying that this units strengths "FAR" outweigh it's weaknesses. It's stereo reproduction is superior particularly when coupeled with a good, efficient pair of speakers (I recommend Phase Technology's 7.5VDT's)
High's and Mid's are right on and Bass is tight. I auditioned over 10 receivers ranging in price from $200-$1200 and none of them could beat this units sonic quility.
It has more than enough power for most applications however don't forget that it's power rating is based on a 6 ohm load not 8 ohms. Still the watts in this baby are of the true, high current variety so even at 80 to 85 watts at 8 ohms you're smokin! No phoney, sony power here.

I'm sort of disappointed at the ommission of stereo pre-outs on this unit to accomodate the option of seperates down the road but as stated before, most people will not want for more power. A digital coax input would have been nice as my Rotel cd player has no optical outputs (a coaxial to optical converter is available at soundprofessionals.com) Binding posts are too far apart to use bananna plugs. No other complaints.

This is a great unit. Remember, this receiver listed at $1200 when it premiered. It's just selling at a discontinued price.

This is an audiophile level receiver at an entry level price. Go buy one if you can still find one!

Sony DVPS-560D DVD
Sony MDS-JE440 Minidisc
