Strength:

Looks good, 100x5, egg remote is moderately impressive for a while.

Weakness:

No bass, egg remote- but... I did the IR remote hack on it and now it works great with my regular sony receiver remote.

This stereo has decent sound overall, however it will produce almost no bass at higher levels. After I saw the fix which allows you to use a regular remote with this receiver (which they originially intended to do but simply did not put in a few parts to implement this feature), I brought it out of retirement. It works like, well, a receiver now that I can control it with a normal remote and I haven't had any problems with it so far. Value rating without the IR fix is a 2, wheras with the fix at its current $200 price its a strong 5.

(just open it up and solder three little parts to the board...)

I am little confused by its remote controller. It seems that this unit depends on a TV screen to accomplish its remote functionality. If somebody can tell me how it works, it will help me a lot. Recently, I am planning to buy a receiver. Obviously, $199 is a good deal. Besides, STR-G3 comes with 5 independent Channels, it allows me to modify it into an AMP for 5-channel Dolby Digital Decoder, if possible.

This is a pretty old receiver. This receiver was a pretty good receiver (considering it was by Sony). This receiver had good Surround Modes and the pro-logic decoding was great. It had alot of features to prevent Cross-Talking and Front Rear Leaking. The Receiver did great on keeping the noise out and it had a great dynamic range (meaning how fast a amplifier can change without getting damaged. such as if there is a really loud part that has a 112 db change than the amplifier can reproduce it. a higher dynamic range means more realistic sound since human ears have a dynamic range of 112 db. that means it can detect a big change from 1 to 112 db. Some Amplifiers have volume stabilizers. That means it takes the dynamic range down to around 0db.) This receiver can be bought for $199 from J&R MUSIC WORLD/COMPUTER WORLD. In Conclusion i think that it's great. It uses sony's advanced Current-Pulse D/A Converters for the DSP and
uses Motorola DSP Processors (one of the best next to Zoran)

I bought one from J&R and promptly returned it. I hated it with all my heart and soul. I ended up buying a Carver 885.1, which I am extremely happy with.

I just recently bought this model, Sony STR-G3, from J&R also. The first thing that attracts me was the price, it's only $199, then it's a Sony, then it has 5.1 channel. Since I know I will only it in a medium sized room, I know it will be fine. I use 5 NHT SuperOnes for the 5 channel. It sounds great, both on music and movies. Then I am planning to add a subwoofer later on. regarding the graphics display remote system, it's kinda different from the common remote commander. You just need to get used to it to appreciate it. And I'm sure if you follow exactly the instructions on the Users Manual, you won't have a problem. I really like the feature there that when you turn on/off the receiver, all the other components attached (e.g. VCR,TV,CD,DVD/LD,etc)will also do.

My friend bought this receiver from J&R. This receiver is one of the poorest constructed receiver. It's a part of their ES line but was removed shortly due to problems. First the Ground plug was very sensitive. It was easily interrupted by EMI Noise. The PRO-LOGIC Performance equaled to about the STR-D450Z and earlier Standard model. There are no strong points to me. If you're just starting Home Theater than take the chance in getting a more expensive receiver. Either the Sony STR-DE915 (good receiver) or the Yamaha RX-V793 (Excellent Receiver) or the Kenwood 1080 VR (ok receiver) or the Pioneer VSX-606s (Good Receiver). They are all under $600 when ordered by mail.

This is the worst reciever and rip off that SONY ever made, I was so upset after purchasing that I sold the unit for about $75 to a freind. I took a loss on the unit but did not carre, It frustrated me so much, the visiontouch did not work past 10 feet and the overall sound was well.. lowrate low fi SONY. I think Sony does make some good stuff but this unit is not onbe of them. I bought also from J&R for $200 and thought I was getting a quality component, I guess not. I later bought a Arcam Alpha 10 and was so p[leased to have a real audiophile componnet that actually sounds good. I dont understand all you Visiontouchers out there this is the worst crap that SONy everr produced, in fact it is pointless to even give this unit a review at all, the only features that make this reciever a reciever is that it is black, has a volume knob, and speaker jacks, other than that utter SHITE!!!!!!

I have had this unit for about 2 years. The remote is a kind of cool thing until you have it for a while. the first problem I had with it was when I got drunk, about a week after I bought it. You see if eye/hand coordination is off then there is no way to operate it, let alone shut it off. The next problem I had was the first time the power went out I had to re-program it. The final problem I have had with it is the fact that it has no power when you turn it up so the base gets totaly distorted.

Kenwood VR2080 Receiver:
Who designed this piece of junk? If you want a migraine headache and nights of lost sleep then buy this receiver!
1. The LCD remote control is useless and too complicated to use.
2. AC-3 is difficult to control and I gave up after 3 nights of trying to get it to work.
3. No S-video
4. No DTS processing

Kenwood engineers need to go back to the drawing board on this one! If I could give negative stars I would, save your money and go buy a Yamaha receiver.

Excellent Dynamic range, good midrange sound, alot of hum noise especially for rear surrounds. This amplifier is not worth the $1000 list price, and only worth about $200 because of features like visiontouch, svideo inputs. There is absolutely no bass from this amplifier so a powered subwoofer or seperate amp is a must. How can sony list this for $1000 and not give you any power to drive the bass. Would the extra $50 or so hurt satisfying the customer on this $1000 pice ov shite. It's only worth $200 and that's why it is selling for $200
