Strength:

30 day return policy! Learning Remote.

Weakness:

Very complicated to use, No bass boost. No volume gain. Flat sounding.

I had very high hopes for this receiver, but was very disapointed with it''s performance. Firstly no bottom end. I use Paradigm Legends with built in subs and had the subs set at full as well as the bass on the receiver at max, and could not rattle one pane of glass. I was previously using a Sony STR-DE545 and in my opinion blew the 975 away. The sound of the 975 I found flat, and the volume gain I had to crank up to 30 for a normal listening pleasure. The 545 if I played it at 14 was LOUD! Maybe the receiver is just defective. On a positive note, I had absolutley no hiss. I bought the STR-975 as I required more optical ins than the 545 offered. I have no given up on Sony as I will be returning the STR-975 today and will try another model.

Strength:

Sound quality for an affordable price. Lots of options.

I thought I was getting the best sound I could from my computer soundcard, which is 24 bit.But I started educating myself on this website. And quickly realized I wasn''t getting digital sound. My previous receiver did not have optical inputs. So I set out to buy a 24 bit receiver with optical input. Instead I got this wonderful receiver with 32-bit DSP. What incredible sound, for an affordable $564 bucks (cdn). The proof is in the headphones, although I have good loudspeakers. I put my Sony V-600''s to use and they exceed the excellent sound I was already getting from my computer sound card. Mind you if the recording isn''t that good the music sounds kind of hollow. But that''s easily solved by switching to 2 channel, instead of Headphone Theater Mode. It has lots of options. But the feature I like most is being able to adjust the speakers to your listening position. And being able to adjust the surround sound. It also has a phono function. The volume control is more precise than my previous receiver. You can get the volume to exactly where you want it. Over all, I couldn''t be happier.

Strength:

Remote, Sony DCS, Price

Weakness:

lack of component video, lack of s-video and optical on front panel

I''ve never been one to buy into all the Sony hype, but I must say this receiver is sweet. This unit is a reasonable price for what you get. I have yet to here the ''Sony hiss'' everyone is talking about, I recommend for those that have it buy better wiring. The universal remote actually controls all my components of different manufactures. Loads of power, all the bells and whistles one might need and no problems so far.

Hissing

I've had the Sony STR-DE975 for about 6 months now and it's been working out great for me. I noticed that some people mentioned the hissing which made me feel good. Not because it happens but just to know that I'm not the only one hearing it. You really don't notice at all unless you're watching a movie and it gets quiet all of a sudden.

I've been wanting a HT system for a while and I finally got the budget to do one. I have the system hooked up to all other Sony equipment except the speakers which are Cambridge Soundworks New Ensemble III speakers. For the price you pay on this receiver and for my first receiver it is well worth the money. There are obviously many more out there I would have liked but they just weren't in the budget.

If a great sound is what you want and you're on a tight budget I would look into this receiver.

110 Watts X 5 - Virtual Matrix 6.1 - Features inputs/outputs - Sound Fields etc

Weakness:

Would like 5 channel stereo like the Denons and also Dolby Pro Logic II

I have had this reciever for 6 months now and Love it. I was also looking at the Harmon Kardon AVR-310 and Denon AVR-2802 but couldnt get them cheap enough But this one holds its own against them I just wish i had Dolby Prologic II for watching normal stereo tv stations with my satelite reciever and wish I had 5 Channel Stereo so I could listen to all my speakers at the same volume with audio if anyone knows a way to do this please email me.
Other than that for $375 you cant beat this head unit. Its
Great I really have no complains No hiss or anything. Im running Klipsch SB-3 Bookshelfs up front, a Klipsh KSCC1 Center channel and a Pair of Klipsch Quintetts for my Rears with a Klipsch KSW-12 Sub.. The system sounds great for my modest entry level First real home theatre setup.

Well this will strike you as being totally unbelievable. In my search for a receiver I hole-heartedly researched audioreview. My first attempt was the purchase of the Kenwood 510 from Futureshop. After hooking it up and listening, it occurred to me: Where is the bass? This thing was a tingy peace of garbage. I took it back, and went elsewhere. My next purchase was the Pioneer 710S. Not a bad sound. I hooked it up and decided for an extra couple hundred i can get the 810. Took that home and was kind of pleased, but the volume had to be maxed for any kind of appreciated response. Took that back, and went all out for an Elite 36 Tx. Hooked this unit up and was scratching my head. For the money this thing didn't perform any better than the 710 at half the cost. I have decent speakers, and the Elite I believe is all hype. Sure it has the bells and whistles, but it doesn't have the gripping punch and power i wanted. So I took this thing back and after getting great service, which I thought at this point would be impossible i ended up getting the Sony STR DE 975. Now, the reps said Sony was junk. I didn't care what the heck they told me. After listening to this thing I was convinced. This unit is extremely powerful. Your speakers will shine with authority. It is a sharp and powerful unit. If your tastes are suited to crisp, powerful sound, than this unit is for you. No hissing, etc. Get this thing for the price. It is truly a bargain.

Instruction manual,

I'm am just getting into this whole DTS and surround sound 5.1 thing but let me tell you I can't get enough. The quality of the sound this thing gives is unbelievable. I shoped around and for the price you can't go wrong with this unit. Knock on wood but fortunately I haven't gotten this so called Sony hiss some individuals talk about. I will do another review after a couple of months.

Tuner, very poor reception in AM. Can´t dial the tuner from the remote.

First, anybody can answer a question?
Are there 2 models of 975 or the photo that appears in crutchfield for this model is wrong? Pls e-mailme

Well, this is my first receiver and I love it. I think is better for movies that music. For example, Pearl Harbor in DTS was amazing. Great separation for the channels, I could listen the planes flying for my entire house. The quality in music is a little lower, but enough for my speaker´s cheapest setup. I´m waiting for my new pair of AR15 and can feel the difference. About the hissing, thanks God I didn´t hear nothing.
Tuner in AM, I can´t sinthonize any station. Maybe it´s because the antenna is not very strong.
For overall is great.
I think that the 975 for start is very good deal.

Strength:

good sound, lots of inputs, learning remote.

Weakness:

digital inputs not assignable, thump when switching audio

This was my 2nd attempt at an A/V reciever. My first was the 875 but I wanted the learning remote, so I returned it. Like the 875, my biggest complaint is that the digital inputs aren't assignable. My digital cable box has a coaxial audio out so I have to press "dvd" to watch tv. The pioneer is much nicer in this respect. My other problem (the bigger one which caused me to return the first one) is that every time I switched inputs, changed EQ settings, or switched between digital and analog inputs, the subwoofer popped. I took my receiver to a friend's house who has a similar speaker setup and an amp which does not "pop" and it did it there too. I took it back and got another one which did the same thing. Next I thought I would just get the 875 and just order the learning remote from Sony, but I went to a best buy and listened to an 875 in their store and it popped as well. I must just have not noticed in the 2 days I owned the 875. What is wrong with this year's receiver line???? I should note, that the pop went away when the sub was turned off in the receiver so if you don't intend on using a sub or hooking up your sub in passive mode, you should be ok. The sound and power are both fine. Also, why isn't the radio fully controlable from the remote? I have sony everything else (VCR, dvd, cd, tape, and tv. I have Polk speakers) and love it all, but no sony receiver for me. I'll just enjoy my Pioneer.....
