I bought this reciever from Best Buy for $479.00. I brought the reciever home and hooked it up to my speakers. And then ran a test tone. The results were a horror. The rear speakers distorted and hissed when the reciever tested the rear speakers. I was shocked because I had never had problems with the 835 and 825 for Sony. I immediately brought it back to Best Buy and returned the unit. They did not have any 935 left so I picked up the 835 and have been happy ever since. After reading a review from June I think on this page I wanted to confirm the noise in the rears, but it did not let the reciever warm up for 30-40 minutes! Who has time for that? I would recommend the 935 if it worked but it is really just as good as the 835 (Minus 10 watts(who cares) and the slow remote). I don't plan to switch back anytime soon.

Short but Sweet: This Receiver Kicks Ass. What other manufacturer can offer the same options for this low of a price? The sound quality is excellent, f'n dolby digital DSP 110W per blah blah blah for under $400 (I got it for $375 delivered)? The bottom line here is value, if you don't want to pay 1000+ for the SONY ES or 700+ for comparable JVC, HK, etc. this is the best bet. And as far as the remote is concerned, suck it up and read the damned manual! Once you figure it out, it's better than sliced bread. I'm giving this a 5.

I just hooked up the 935 over the weekend and let me say, it blew me away. I was replacing my str-de625 that I bought only last year, because I wanted the digital options. This unit is amazing, awesome power for the value, clear and free of any distortion on all channels. Others have complained about the remote, but I had no problem with it (but I should point out that almost all of my other components are from SONY). I chose it for value over the ES system. Overall I give it a 5 because it is the best value for the money that I could find anywhere ($370 delivered).

I'm not sure if the previous poster did all of his homework, but I found the 935 for $383+ at J&R Audio (They matched SupremeVideo's advertised price, and are great to deal with), so I wouldn't exactly put the 935 and the HK in the same price range. I live in a townhouse with a smallish living room, so I elected to go with the 935, and hook it to a Boston Acoustics 9000 sub/sat system (BTW if you're in the market for a like product, you can't beat these speakers in the $1,000 price range) and the receiver sounds great. The hissing and rear crackling noises people are reporting must be isolated incidents, because they are not present in mine. (And if they were, luckily, I live 5 miles from Sony's Eastern service center). Like in my auditioning at various locations, the sound does turn out to be very warm in just about all sound fields, depending on the speakers that you hook to them (the BA's are VERY warm for a sub/sat system). And it flat-out gives you the most features in it's price range. The remote leaves a little to be desired (I kind of thought it would, when it had it's own separate manual in the box), but not to the point where it takes a whole lot away from the entire package.
My interpretation of the rating system is to measure what you get against what you paid. For around $400, nothing can touch this receiver. I'm sure there are certainly better sounding receivers out there. The HK's and Denon's and Yamaha's of the world (and even Sony) certainly produce receivers that sound better than the 935. The flip side of that is that you pay more for them. I think some reviewers have lost sight of that. I'm giving this product 5 stars, because I couldn't find a receiver that has more features or sounds better for the amount of money I paid. Certainly, with the amount of units that Sony pumps out, there are bad apples in the bunch (My Sony CDP-cx300 is one of them. I will be driving it to the Sony shop on Monday). But I was one of the fortunate ones, so the 5 star review stands.

This reciever is garbage, I exchanged 4 recievers and all I got was distortion out of the rears, the sound quality sucks, and you have to turn the knob almost full to get loud sound. I'm now going to go with a HK AVR 65, its a much much much much much better reciever with deeper, cleaner, warmer sound... The Sony is garbage, I don't recommend it at all.

After purchasing a Kenwood 309 and quickly returning it, I bought the Sony 935. I got the Sony for $475 from Circuit City. I need S-Video and Digital Audio for my DVD and satellite receiver which I was told the 935 could handle from the salesman.
Well, it doesn't have S-Video for the satellite so it didn't work for me. For the short time I had it I loved it. It had good sound quality and the s-video switching worked great with no signal loss. I thought the remote worked good too as it handled all my components.

If you need satellite s-video and digital audio, go with the JVC 888. It's what I have now and it's great!

Overall I really liked the Sony. It sounded good and the picture was good. For the mosey though, the JVC 888 is a better receiver in my opinion.

I just wanted to clear something up here. I have read the reviews posted on the 935 and I kind of think they are unfare to it. Most people are comparing it to a harmon kardon, onkyo, or denon. This comparison can't be made because the HK, denon, onkyo are all high current, such as a sony es reciever would be. The 935 is not, so of course the other brand names are gonna be better sounding. However, this is a great peice of equipment if you only want to get a home theater up and running and are using average speakers. In the $500-$600 price range it competes well because it is feature laden whereas many of its high current competitors either don't have something in that price range or if they do the peice doesn't have all the features that the sony does. I have heard this peice along with most of the peices that people have talked about in their reviews. Yes the others do sound better, but they cost more and are not in the same league. If you want great sound at a semi reasonable price get the denon avr5700, I have it and it is great, but if you only want to spend hundreds on a reciever and not thousands then the sony 935 is your bag.

I hate to burst the bubble here, but this receiver isn't as great as its cracked up to be. I've had it for a month now and the underlying problems are starting to surface. But, keep in mind, this may just be me. I get severe hissing in my rear speakers, the remote sucks the life out of batteries like there's no tomorrow, among other things. I would just avoid it all together if I were you. Get an Onkyo or a JVC if you're willing to spend the money, they drive the speakers better than this one. I will give it two stars because it has options others don't, if you're in to bells and whistles, this is your receiver, if you prefer quality, balance and reliability, avoid it. BTW, the remote wasn't that hard to figure out, but it was enough of a pain to add to my dissatisfaction with the product, and I have certain components that it just wouldn't work with no matter what I did. Good luck.

I'm soo glad, I didn't purchase this piece of junk. The sound quality in one word stinks, so does the remote, and so does this unit itself. It's an overpriced piece of junk. I purchased a Harman Kardon AVR65, with one Optical Cable, and one Coaxile cable 1 meter each from AudioQuest, 2nd day shipped from OneCall, for $775, I also purchased an Audio Quest Turquiose 6 meter Subwoofer kit, for an additional $69, I am very happy with the HK, there is clean, deep sound. Whereas the Sony has a cooler sound. Guys don't be foolish spend a little more money, and get yourselves a HK, its really worth it. I'm gonna give the Sony 1 star because it's a piece of overpriced junk. It might have nice features, but the sound sucks. Even thought the AVR65 has 65 watts per channel it doesn't matter, because it has 30 current whereas the Sony only has like 12... so go with the HK it's the best reciever in the price range.

This is my first A/V receiver. Price wise, it's unbeatable. $370 shipped from www.shop4.com( it actually took 14 days to get it, although no tracking information ). I just hooked it up with my brand new home theater components, ( Toshiba 3109 DVD Player, cx32h60 TV and Panasonic VCR and Energy take 5 with esl 8" subwoofer ). It's awesome. I never experienced this before. I am a happy person now. Highly recommended for entry level home theater system.
