For $165, I couldn't pass it up. This was manufactured when Sony still made great products that seemed to last forever! The receiver has a bunch of inputs, including phono (long live vinyl), which I'll probably use only a couple of them, but they are there if you need them. It also has a lot of tone settings for each channel which I found a little confusing (what ever happened to the old bass, mid and treble pots?). I think I have it set right now, but only after a lot of tweaking. Some people get caught up in the so-called ratings game but I figure that if a unit stays under 1% THD, you probably can't tell the difference anyway. Just keep the receiver within it's limits and not to try to get more out of it than it's designed to do. The remote is a challange, but once you have it figured out, it works okay. So far I'm very pleased with this receiver.

Strength:

Loud & proud 5.1. Great for sci-fi DVD's and absolutely rocks when I listen to Metallica, Megadeth.....yet still sounds great when I listen to jazz or blues.

Weakness:

Have used it for less than a year and am already having it serviced. Must be a short in it....it just turns itself on & off for no apparent reason. I've never been so frustrated with a receiver in my life. Not sure I'll ever buy another Sony product. That being said, if I didn't experience this problem, I'd be 100% satisfied. It's great when it's working....

This receiver does everything I wanted it to do when I went receiver shopping. However, I've been having troubles with mine. I can be right in the middle of watching a DVD or listening to a CD and it turns itself off. I must have got the one lemon in the bunch.

2 way remote is slow and use a lot of power.

Good performance for the price. Love the well organized back-panel. It makes connection so much more easier. Feature packed.

I have had this product since Aug. And I have had very few problems with it. Did have some popping & crackling during some movies but since then I got a new DVD player and works fine now. Some remote delay that pisses me off but it is reflecting off of the glass in front of my rack. I have my 1st dts movie Saving pvt ryan nice!

Strength:

Best bang for the Buck approx $390.00 with shipping included

Weakness:

Manual, remote was confusing at first.

First off, by no means am I an expert on this subject.

Went to a circuit city and tested all of the receivers they had with different speakers and found this one to be the best in MY PRICE RANGE.

Have not experienced any of the problems that some of the others have posted.

I am currently in the process of picking out new speakers for this unit. Currently have:
Wharfedal Modus 1.6 for fronts (bi wired)purchased from Ubid $400. for the pair shipping included.
No center or Sub
using 2 old no name speakers (given to me by a friend)

I am happy with this unit and would recommend it... I believe this unit for its price can not be beat... "Just my opinion"

If anyone has any ideas for a good SUB, center, and/or rear speakers for this unit I would appreciate hearing from You.

Strength:

Inputs and outputs are definitely a strength

Weakness:

The remote is slow but tolerable

This box has everything you need in the price range that it is. The problem I had with it was the distorted sound from the rear channel. It wasn't all the time however it seemed like it was certain low sounds that were distorted. I switched speaker wire and switched speakers and the distorted sound was still there. I took the receiver back and purshased an STRDB930 after reading the reviews on this site. I have had no problems with the DB930.

Tons of Features...Adjustable Levels For All Speakers. Awesome 2 Way Remote. DTS LOVE HOME THEATRE!!!

Weakness:

Too Many Features...unused surround modes. Slow Remote. SPEAKERS SHOULD ALL HAVE TWIST KNOBS LIKE THE MAIN!!!

I'm in love. This is a great reciever for the money. Programmable Remote is nice feature. Adjustable sound frequency for all speakers is a major plus to help match your speakers. I got mine for a tad over $400. If you are new to Home Theatre and don't want to break the bank this is a good way to go. If you are a Full Blow Audiophille this is probably not the best Reciever in the world.

Strength:

Plenty of power, sounds good and looks decent.Price was right, $420.

Weakness:

Goofy remote and the manual is not the most helpful.

First, they should take the stupid sob that designed the remote and throw him off a bridge, then set him on fire and then hurt him severely. Second, they should find the guy(or gal) who wrote the manual and they should stake them out on an ant hill!!

Once you get past those two useless pieces of garbage (the remote and the manual) the receiver itself is good. But that damned remote. For some unkown reason the remote will just quit working----period. I have to take off the back and take the batteries out completely, re-insert them then it will work. Maybe it's possessed, who knows.

I'm still thinking very hard about taking the receiver back to Costco and buying a Onkyo receiver.
3 out of 5 stars.
