I have STR-DE925 from 2004. My cousin bought Rotel-RSX-1055 and gave me DE925 as a gift. Since then I "tried" to replace my DE925 many times but I liked DE925's sound more then competitor's, so Sony staid.

Very funny that just at 15-Mar-2015 my cousin again replaced his Rotel-RSX-1055 amplifier and gave me it as a gift. I done very extensive sound comparisons between the 2 and surprise... Sony STR-DE925 beats Rotel-RSX-1055 in every sound measures, I just like Sony's rich sound much more than Rotel's. So... my old Sony friend will stay and Rotel I already put for sale on kijiji Montreal.

I bought this Sony STR-DE925 at a yard sale. It is replacing an older 2 channel unit (quite old) that has no subwoofer input. I have a pair of Paradigm Atom speakers and their PDR10 subwoofer [a so called 2.1 system] and using it with the old receiver wasn't impossible at all, but it wasn't very convenient. This Sony receiver had what I needed. After hooking things up, problem solved. I no longer have to run speaker wire from the receiver to the subwoofer and then to the "satellites". Instead, I just run the Atom speakers directly off the receiver's speaker connections and the PDR10 subwoofer off the receivers RCA subwoofer out. Further more _ as is the case with nearly all av receivers _ I could adjust all levels and crossover settings to my liking. The system sounds much better than it ever did. This receiver has lots of features and adjustability _ more than I'm likely to use. This one also has a dedicated phono input where the turntable goes [if you still play LPs]. This receiver is noticeably better in sound, hook up options, tuner performance. The STR - DE925 does require you to adjust many things manually. That may sound like an annoyance, but it puts you in control of what you want it to do. Speaking of which, do most of your adjustments at the receiver instead of the remote. The remote is somewhat limited which is pretty true of many av components. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this receiver because it solved my problem.

Strength:

1) sound
2) performance
3) price

Recommended to anyone who wants a quality digital sytem for a fair price.

Weakness:

None

Purchased the sony str de925 at sears. It was the demo so i got a good price for a new/used item. I have used this off and on for the past 10 years. It has always performed flawlessly. I just hooked it up in my new apartment again. Since all of my other components are also sony it makes it very easy because their is only one remote, and it controls everything. Sound is crystal clear. It decodes all digital formats. I am pushing a custom pair of JBL speakers. 15 inch woofer with the jbl bullet tweeters. Man does it sound good. You can not go wrong with this series of a/v receivers.
This receiver is currently running my sony tv, sony cd player and dvd player and the best thing is only one remote. It also features 4 separate optical hookups for your entertainment system. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone who wants a quality sytem for a fair price.

Customer Service

Have never had to get any fixed except the cd player. Due to being the 1st 5 disc player they made. I have had it rebuilt once. It came out in the mid 1990's. I use it constantly. So i consider this normal maintenance .

Strength:

Quiet and powerful sound.

Weakness:

No Optical input for a CD player, I don't get that becuse Sony was the big pusher for that!

Good sound and flexability as Sony usually does for the money. So far no reliablity issues have come up with anything that I have(All of which is Sony).

Takes a long amount of time to setup right! Not for the average Joe blow. DTS Audio Delay problem no S-video(but no biggy)

Well I have read reviews on this receiver and I am mystified by how your receiver is behaving. After reading all the reviews I wonder how many of you guys actually sat down and read the manual and tweaked with the settings. For that one guy that said he couldn't get the volume past 11 oclock with out static. Well on mine I can get it to about 12 to 3 without static although extremly loud. Any how I got my receiver on a Sell at Ultimate Electronics. It was a demo unit cause they ran out so quick. It was about 350 bones. When I bought it they didn't have or couldn't find the remote. I complained a couple times before they gave me a remote. The Remote has a test tone for setting up the speakers. Works great no problems at all except delay in DTS audio tracks. It does get hot but give it some breathing room. I have heard slight hiss but not enough to get me jumping up and down angry. Also if you use speakers that can't take the full 110 watts for each speaker there is some hiss or static when you turn up or down the volume. As for the sound fields I think they can be improved or taken out altogether. Many of the sound fields can be tinny but there are options to set to stop that. Sit down Read the manual and play with the buttons you learn lots if you do this!

Strength:

Great features at the time, s-link, 2 way remote, many soundfields.

Weakness:

No sound problem about every 2 months or so, and confusing eq settings

This reciever was one of the best when I bought it back in 1999, but with all of the new models coming out I am getting jealous. This unit has worked fine for me for 3 years now with only the ususal no sound problem. What is up with that? I have owned many Sony products and have seen some quality issues from them in the past few years. Such as my Sony dvd player that lasted only a year. Overall this reciever gets an A, but could use a little cleaner amp 0.09%thd compared to the competitors 0.05%. I think that when I decide to upgrade in the near future I will be switching to Denon for the sound quality and the build quality.

Miss the treble and bass controls of my yamaha

I got a great price on this receiver from Home Entertainment and liked it right from the start. All my other gear is Sony so I wanted to give Sony a shot in the receiver dept.
I was glad to see some similar posts about a problem I have had since the beginning. My unit has a sporadic problem of no sound when I turn on the unit. You know how their is a pause after you turn the unit on and then "click" and you get sound, well sometimes no "click" and no sound. I can turn it off then on several times (waiting in between) and it will finally start working properly. I had it serviced by a sony repair center under warranty and I thought they fixed the problem but its back. Its not over heating because this will happen after turning it on for the first time of the day.

I have high quality monster cable speaker cable and connects that worked perfectly fine with my Yamaha system. I told the service rep that couldnt be the problem.

If anyone hears of a permanent solution to this problem please drop me an email. roger.stroud@netzero.net

Strength:

Plenty of power,sounds great

Weakness:

Remote not easy to setup

This is my first digital receiver and I have no complaints.
The unit gets as warm as I would expect any receiver to get,not hot.

I drive a set of Dalquist DQ30i's in front with no problem. The surround is very clear and realistic sounding. I have had unit playing fairly loud and I don't think I ever had the volume dial set to go past the 2 o'clock position, plenty of power.

I have read a lot of bad reviews about Sont receivers but I can honestly say that I never had a days trouble with this unit and I would recommend it.
