Strength:

great for movies and music

Weakness:

gets really warm, have to turn it up to 25 to get overall sound, max volume is 48

the 875 is a really good receiver ,but that 6.1 decoding is really a useless feature, cause this receiver doesnt have the 6th input for the back surround speaker other than that its the same as the 845 basicly just looks .i think that with the volume its really weird i have to turn it to 25 to get close to loud volumes and the max volume is 48 so i am pretty close to max volume as with anybody with this receiver.i think i am going to exchange this receiver for something else maybe onkyo or harman.

Strength:

lots of inputs (more than you will probably ever need)
nice design

Weakness:

poor equalizer
confusing controls
too bright indicators

I decided to buy this model because it offers the same functionality as the QS-line STR-DB840 for less money, but I am not satisfied. Especially the bass in low volumes seems to be poor to me, and the equalizer is not capable to compensate it (its range is -10/+6 dB although the manual states -10/+10 dB). You can increase the volume to obtain the satisfying sound, which is okay for stereo music, but if you want to enjoy the home cinema, the subwoofer (that I dont have) is a must. Moreover, the controls are quite irracional to me, but it is a Sony standard in my opinion. For example, buttons must be used for tuning the stations, while a knob is used for selecting an input source. Also, why can I launch the "Test" mode from a remote, when I cant use it for displaying the RDS information? The last thing I dont like are too bright indicators. If you watch movies in a dark room, they are shining like a Christmas tree, that may be ok for children, but I find it very bothering.
To sum it up, the receiver is quite good product, but I recommend compare it to the higher STR-DB840 and consider spending 80-100 dollars more for this QS. This one is really very high-rated receiver of the higher QS line and the price difference seems to be not so significant for me now.

remote, and setup was a little confusing

Let me say first off that I have been a fan of Sony products for years, and that system integration was part of my decision to go with the 875. This is the first DD DTS system I've owned so I cannot really compare it to other similar products. I use the receiver primarily for home theater and have to agree with most of the reviews I read about the improvement DD and DTS is over Pro-Logic. I believe 875 is feature rich and very competitive in the sub $400 market. If I had to find a complaint I guess it would the initial setup and instructions, but after going over the instructions a few times I have to say I have been very pleased with my purchase. The separation dynamics and clarity of the 875 are remarkable and believe you would be hard pressed to find a better receiver for the money.

Strength:

Love the power, equilizer, soundfield link, and the multiple optical inputs

Weakness:

None that I've discovered yet.

I have to say that this was a huge improvement from my old 335 which has found a home connected to the TV in the bedroom. Love everything about it. I do admit that the remote control is a bit intimidatin at first, but it makes sense once you get the hang of it. Excellent receiver for the dollar. This is thing makes watching movies quite an experience.

Strength:

The virtual Speakers Sound, 27 sound modes, back pannell, price!

Weakness:

hissing, weakness of volume, bright lights, 6.1 rear center is missleading you can not have an extra rear center channel

I don't love this unit. I was expecting so much more! I was told that you can hook up an extra rear center channel. The manuel kind of hints to that as well. As of now, I am under the impression that you can not. I get tons of hissing; have to crank it up just to get volume. The lights are evry bright, and the receiver pops. I am using monster cable and decent modern speakers. I like the price, but jones for the Real 6.1 channel imput the STR-DE1075 has. The sound is good, but need more power. If I did not have to turn it to 30 for good volume, I would be happier. The STR-DE 475 seemed to have better sound at lower volume. The sound difference between the two is incredible. The 875 does have better sounds, when they can be heard.

Strength:

Clean detailed seperation and DD & DTS and Virtual 6.1 sounds great

Weakness:

remote is not programable

I bought my 875 in mid June 2001 the week it was made available here in Southern Ca. So I have had time to play with it and I have to say my family and myself have been very impressed with the unit so far. In my opinion DD and DTS sound great and the Virtual 6.1 surround is seamless and very clean. Check out DTS ES versions of Cast Away or Gladiator.

I've seen two reviews complaining about hissing and that the lights are too bright. I just want to state that the 875 has a variable display that you can adjust so that the lights go off, or dim and light up only while making adjustments, or you can have them stay bright if you prefer. As far as hissing complaint goes, all I can say is that while using a digital source I have never heard a hiss. I know that when watching older films or VHS there is sometimes a noticeable tape hiss or noise in the recording because of limitations in older technology, which is to be expected.

I have a 22x18 living room and have never had to or wanted to go to or past 30 while using a true digital source. The virtual rear center does a pretty fair job if the speakers are placed and the system is setup correctly. The center speaker can be used as a rear center if you want a phantom front center, but I believe the virtual rear works well enough, and wonder if true 6.1 or 7.1 would be practical or even appreciated in most average viewing areas.

Strength:

Very good DTS and sginal separation

Weakness:

Bass is non-existatnt at low levels,
very hard to configure,
Radio tuner is not as strong as other units.

I bought the STR-DE875, being a Sony fan. When I first got it home, I thought it was broken, for I couldnt get any bass response from my Bose speakers. The store swapped me a new unit, I got it home, same problem, no bass, so I called an expert in, the bass is now much better, but still not up to other units, unless the volume is turned up. Radio tuner is not as strong as other units. However, I was very impressed with Dolby 5.1/DTS playback on DVD. Star Wars I was better than the movie theater. Im not a novice or dummy, but the instructions were very sparse and confusing. After it was set up, and I didn't fool with it, it is just great. I dont hear any hissing like Ive read about. Id give it 5 stars if it wasnt for the bass issue(s).

Strength:

lots of setup options

Weakness:

none so far

Had it over a month now.
The sound and power seems much better than my old STR D450Z.
The only hiss I get is on one of the TV stations or FM radio. This is to nbe expected. The digital source is "clean". The remote is complcated at first, but after a day or so you get the hang of it. So far I cant think of anything negative about it. Works great!
