Strength:
Number of features to suit your speakers, room, and movie.
Weakness:
Not enough S-video inputs or optical, no EQ for music Can't believe I didn't get the 935. The quality for movie watching is high. Good seperation for the 5.1 and various surround modes. Plenty of power for entertaining guests or home theatre. Would work best (for music) with an EQ. The remote rocks. I can work everything but my Playstation with that thing. Would and have suggested this model to several friends. Heat is not a real issue unless you stack components on top. Someone near the top of this review list stated that there was not enough bass in the rear speakers. There is an option in the menus of the reciever that let you choose what "size" your speakers are as to allow more or less bass to filter to each channel. Anyone who has been hooked by home theatre but is not ready to shell out buxxx for a MacIntosh amp should use this unit. Similar Products Used: JVC, Onkyo, Kenwood, Realistic. |

Strength:
Decent sound, DD and DTS decoding, lots of sound fields.
Weakness:
Remote kind of sucks, not enough optical inputs, does get warm but won't reach cooking temperatures like suggested. I really like this receiver. I still consider myself a novice, and I needed a receiver for the DVD player in my room (the rest of the family hasn't gotten hooked like me yet). I looked at various different receivers and this matched all my criteria. It's got Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, 100 watts a channel, and some good sound fields. After perhaps twenty minutes to a half hour for basic setup and options, I was hooked. There are very few weaknesses as far as I'm concerned. First, there aren't very many optical inputs. The three are devoted to the DVD player (which also has a coaxial cable input), one to a Mini Disk, and the third I believe to a satellite or cable box. There should have been one for a CD player and another AV unit input. Also, the remote takes some time to get used to. I personally don't like the flip-top of the remote they give you, it always seems like the cover is going to warp and break. I still use my DVD player's remote until I get a better universal remote. And it does get warm after a few hours of DD or DTS use, but I usually only watch one movie and then give it a rest. I've had it since early February and have had no major problems with it. |

Strength:
Price, lots of options (sound fields)
Weakness:
rear output weak ummmmm....all recievers get hot dudes. its a fact of life, i feel this gets no hotter than my pioneer did. i have not expirenced any problems with my unit and have had it for four months now. i dont usually don't play it to loud due to my little one (trying to preserve her little ears). i have pumped it a few times and it passed my test. i think it's a steel for the price and would recommend over some of the higher priced Yamahas and Denons. try it out, if you dont like it, return it. but what a steel. Price, Features
Weakness:
Remote, Poorly designed heat dissapation I like the sound of this unit. Great features for the price. BEWARE: If you use this unit inside any type of enclosure......the power transistors will eventually thermal fail on you. This unit has very poor thermal dissapation engineering........they should have used a fan or had a bigger better placed heat sink. Similar Products Used: Other Sony Receivers |

Flexibility, reliability, mix of inputs/outputs
Weakness:
Remote Control Great receiver for the price! I have it wired up with a Sony Wega 32", Sony DVP-C650D, Dish Networks Sat. receiver, and a mix of Speakers.. ie 10" 3-way Cerwin Vegas, 6.5" 3-way Wharfedales, Wharfedale Center, two smaller Sony Cubes for surround, and two powered Subs (12" Acoustic Research, & a duel 6.5" Sony)all wired with monster cable. I have yet to experience any problems with this unit. It does however get a little on the warm side if used for an extended amount of time, but I have had NO problems with overheating. On occasion, Ill send the source to all the speakers at once, (selecting both a+b in Auto Format).. I then turn up the sub out… sit back a enjoy awesome sound reproduction! Do note, this isn't an audiophile grade unit.. But very capable non the less.. I love all the inputs/outputs available. (General system flexibility) I have my DVD player wired to it via the digital coax in, and I love the sound quality with DVDs, as well as CDs. When watching DVDs, the sound stage is incredible for such a low priced unit. All the life like sounds come from where they should, enveloping you in the movie.. Making you wonder at times if the sound you heard was indeed the movie, or actually generated there in the room with you! This can be one hair-raising experience with thriller/action movies. Strength:
Awesome for movies - great for the money
Weakness:
None so far. I got this for a song and added a JBL PS12 subwoofer and "wow"! The entire building is shaking now and my neighbors are now enemies! I use all KEF speakers (except for the sub) and it is a quiet, clean and kick-ass system! It won't do what my JBL SR Series does (eight 18" 600watt subs, eight 15" 600watt subs, eight 12" 600 watt mids, four 2" 200 watt horns and four 50 watt ultra-high freq. drivers - all driven by racks of Crown MacroTech and Crest amps - approx. 5,000 watts/side) but hey, not much out there that will! For the money it sure packs a whollop on it's own and I'm not looking at empty pockets like I would be if I had bought Denon, Marantz, Harmon Kardon, etc! I guess I had a knowledgeable salesman because he advised me to not put ANY surround receiver in a rack with no air circulation and I haven't had problem one. The amp at best gets a little warm at those times when I'm driving music levels high for long periods of time. The discrete outputs on this thing are quite an improvement over my 1986 Sony receiver (still running strong!) and with a slight tweaking with the EQ on music and FLAT for movies I am in home theatre heaven! I feel for those who got lemons but hey, you could be driving a Ford Explorer with Firestones! Similar Products Used: Sony, Marantz and Kenwood receivers |
