Strength:

serviceable music reproduction for price range. good 3 channel dolby digital response on VHS no mechanical issues in 3 years

Weakness:

oh, bass, where art thou? 5.1 subwoofer response non-existant. How do you watch Top Gun with the bass equivalent of the a.m. radio in a '79 Buick?!

With JBL L5's in the front, JBL 2500's in the back and JBL d110 woofer, and JBL center, this receiver has been adequate for my music needs, and even on VHS in pro logic mode. I do doubt the 100x5 power. What yanks my chain on this thing is the ABYSSMAL bass response in 5.1 mode as well as the lack of drive to rear speakers as well. I've read the reviews and agree that this receiver is to be a plain vanilla middle-of-the-road receiver, but has not met my expectations of being an average performer as a true home theater receiver. Remote is a bit faulty as well.

Strength:

looks nice. alot of features

Weakness:

lacks volume and clear sound

I purchased the str-de715 a few months ago as an upgrade of quality from the previous audio equipment i had ( 100w analog Kenwood amp ). Finding a quality amp and speakers has been a hobbie for me. i became interested in digital sound after i heard my friends "Yamaha natural sound" amp play in his living room, it blitzd me and i was determind to save money to purchase something similar. i don''t know what it is about my sony amp but it just doesn''t rate to the yamaha. i have it hooked up on 2 big front speakers, 3 way with 10" woofers, and 2 technics for rare speakers and a small onkyo for the center. the down side i saw in the sony was just the lack of grunt for the claimed 100wx5 and just not as clear as i would have liked it to be, otherwise, i think it''s a nice amp, good looking and reliable.

Too many reviewers here don''t know how to rate a product. Have owned Sony receivers for 8 years now (2) and never had any breakdown whatsoever. And they get used every day. I definitely agree with the mediocre bass response and weaker rear speaker sound. But we are talking about a low to mid range quality amp. You want a top of the line amp then go out and pay for one!! The tv functions are reasonable enough though not flashy. On the music side it once again lacks the bass but the mid-range and highs adequate and powers my 4 speakers(including 2 ex-nightclub tower speakers) fine. All in all, a decent amp for the beans you spend.

Strength:

Sounds great. Reliable. Display easily read across room.

Weakness:

Rear speakers aren''t loud enough. No volume control for subwoofer. Processor seems light on features. Gets hot when crannked up. Wish it had DD decoder.

I''ve owned this receiver for almost 4 years and relatively happy with it. Never had it in for repairs. Sounds great.

Strength:

numerous features

Weakness:

lacks headphone jacks and volume control for the headphone jack

I fell in love with my SLPD-988 before I even took it out of the box. I bought it mail order form J&R Music World. I was looking for a CD player that had something different from everything else and I have always owned Technics products from Turntables to tapedecks to receivers. The 988 gave me an option called AUTO CUE that I really use a lot for DJ'ing and of the course the pitch control. Can't find too many CD Platers with pitch anymore?! Plus the amber and green illuminated indicator lights. It is a great product and if it ever breaks on me...it'll be fixed NOT replaced!

Sound. Home Theatre is decent but music quality is poor

Picked this receiver up 2 years ago because it was heap and had everything. Sound quality when playing music was worse then the $200 Sony receiver I had before it. Theatre sound quality was good but you could tell it was lacking.

Pulled the receiver out and put in a Pioneer Elite. The difference is night and day.

For the price this receiver has everything but the sound is surprisingly poor for a Sony.

Would I buy it again with what I know now?.....NO. The features just don't make up for the poor sound quality.

Everything

What a piece of junk! Crapped out on me twice in the 3 years I owned it. First the flourescent display burned out at year 2. Then the amplifier section zapped-out with sparks and smoke. Sony wouldn't fix it and it would have cost more than $200 to fix it. Don't waste your money on any Sony products. Also had a Sony vcr drive mechanism crap out but was covered under warrenty.

Strength:

It does have some... Learning remote...lots of inputs ( who uses them all tho? )

Weakness:

see below

far less than 100wpc, DSP is next to useless, sound leaves something to be desired, No BINDING POSTS, speaker terminals too small and fragile, Sub out has no lwpass filter........................

Was happy till I heard some other amps / recievers....
The transformer is about the size of a 170watt TV transformer... How do they propose to get 500watts out of a 170 watty supply??
On my reciever, the rear amps wont drive my speakers as their lowish ( drop to 6 ohm ) impeedance
The rear amp died recently
The volume motor died
the speaker terminals broke with 2.5 mm wire in them
the rears have never been powerfull enough
all the writing on the remote rubbed off within 1 year
no memory of what settings you have for each input

Sony did not do a good job here sorry!
