I bought this receiver at a yard sale for $5, and for what I bought it for I really can't complain. It is about 80 wpc so I used some little Onkyo speakers (model D-NX3A) rated at 70 wpc and some JBL's (model J2060)rated 120-150 wpc. It sounded pretty decent (knowing that its no high end receiver), although it lacked bass with the JBL's. Over all its a simple to use, good sounding receiver that is dose a good job doing what it was made for. I never got to use the 5.1 suround sound, and it didn't come with a remote.

Strength:

Dolby Digital signal light. Various inputs, price

Weakness:

no s-video inputs or outputs, and no component video inputs or outputs. you have to kind of turn it up high to get its full sound effect.

This receiver is very good for an entry level one. Powerful amp is a bonus. The surround sound indicator light is very nice to ensure that the DTS or 5.1 is working correctly. Has optical and coaxial inputs meaning very good sound.

Strength:

good power output. clear sound, powers my speakers perfectly. Good remote, good surround sound control.

Weakness:

none so far.

I bought this as an op[en box item at best buy. This is a really good receiver for the price. It has good power output, very clear highs and lows. It also has good control on the surround settings. I have this paired up with some sony towers and KLH rears. I used to have the str-de685, but i had sold that before, and I was using the aiwa av-d57(piece of crap, broke on me). SO i bought this one, it is just like the 685 but some less features.

Strength:

Low price Tons of features Plenty of inputs

Weakness:

Bizarre "demo" mode is difficult to exit without Sony's help.

So far, so good. However, when you first plug it in, the unit goes into "Demo" mode and cannot be used until you escape from it. I called Best Buy and the guy laughed and told me to call Sony (they'd had the same problem with a floor model). I called Sony and was able to get the unit to work, and now it seems great.

Strength:

Good bang for the buck. Optical and Coaxial inputs. Plenty of options to calibrate system to room, i.e. Speaker distance, size, balance, height, etc.

Weakness:

I would buy a more expensive amp if I were going to listen to music more than watch DVD's and movies.

This is a good entry-level surround sound receiver. I'm kind of disappointed in its musical capabilities. Parents have an Onkyo 50w/ch amp that seriously outperforms this musically. 80w/ch is very misleading.
