Strength:

Power, remote, connections,& a Great looking piece of gear.

Weakness:

Your abilty to understand the way the remote works.not really enough s-video inputs.

I purchased this unit Feb. of 2001. I looked & reviewed a lot of units before selecting this one. I love the remote, though it seems slow at times. You have to really learn how to use it before you complain about it. The hissing everybody is talking obout is really normal. If you conect any reciever with this amout of power to a pair of sensitive speakers,it will hiss. A perfect product for an averge user.

Strength:

Excellent Home Theatre unit with strong amplifier and very clear vocals through the centre speaker.

Weakness:

Unreliability of product. Difficulty for local Sony engineers to correct problems. Poor sound quality in Tuner / CD Stereo modes.

I purchased this receiver to replace an old pioneer analog receiver. As my first digital receiver I was impressed with the home theatre capability of this receiver and the output level. I never had to push the receiver hard to get a suitable listening volume for movies. On the music front I was very disappointed with the tuner sound quality, and the CD sound was also a bit lacking. I then had problems with power supply which were unable to be fixed even after four trips back to the shop. I have now returned the product and purchased an Onkyo Amplifier, which has a significantly lower power output but is miles ahead in tuner & cd stereo music quality. I have not heard anything that sounds better than the DB-940 for Home Theatre sound if set up right.

Strength:

EXCELLENT WITH DVD MATERIAL IN BOTH 5.1 AND DTS. VERY STRONG DELIVERY ON BASS CHANNELS. EXCELLENT STEREO IMAGING. FANTASTIC VALUE FOR MONEY.

Weakness:

NOT TOO HOT WITH MUSIC CD''s. REMOTE TOO FIDDLY AND DELAYED. BACK INPUTS TOO CLUTTERED.

FOR THE MONEY, NOTHING COMES CLOSE!!! I HAVE HOOKED UP THIS FANTASTIC AMP TO MISSION 703 FRONTS, SONY CENTRE AND REARS AND A WHARFDALE SUB. LISTEN TO GLADIATOR IN DTS AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF "PERFECT CLARITY." TRY SPINNING A COPY OF TITAN A.E AND BE PREPARED TO BE SHAKEN DOWN TO YOUR BONES BY THE SUB-BASS. A TRULY AMAZING AMPLIFIER ON THE HOME THEATRE FRONT. LETS DOWN SLIGHTLY ON MUSIC BY NOT BEING FAST ENOUGH OR PUNCHY ENOUGH TO KEEP UP WITH UP-TEMPO CD''s. BUT IN ITS DEFENCE, DIGITALLY MASTERED CD''s FARE MUCH BETTER WITH THE AMP BEING ABLE TO DELIVER SLOWER MOVING RHYTHMS WITH EASE. TRY IT. BUY IT. YOU WILL BE AMAZED THAT SO LITTLE MONEY CAN BUY SUCH BIG OOMPH!!!

Strength:

Power!140WX5 at 8 ohm , Remote, Champagne color, cooper chasis, gold covered inputs outputs...

Weakness:

Extra channel support, THX certificate... But these would make the machine more expensive.

Last year I had a STR-DE 445, which was a proper AV-Receiver but not a strong one. Especially after purchasing DALI 606 front and DALI AXS 5000 surround loudspeakers, the performence of the receiver could not keep up with the loudspeakers so I decided to purchase a new one. First I thought to buy a Denon or an Onkyo. I never thought about Yamaha or others because of subjective (my liking the sound and the brands)and the objective (my money) facts, but I end up buying this SONY. Because until the day I bought the receiver I hadn''t seen a Champagne colored SONY receiver (Believe me it looks better than the black ones even better than Marantz and Denons.). The seller told me that this is imported from Japan and has some different properties than the European and American versions like 140Wx5 output! At that moment I decided to buy the machine. This machine is a monster by turning the volume a little bit up I can create little earthquakes. It is not only strong but it is also a reliable receiver. It effortlessly drives the speakers as I like. From Vivaldi to Pavement, from Ammadeus to Matrix it is the best responsing receiver ever. (At least for this price category).

Strength:

sound prosessing, build, features

Weakness:

slow 2 way remote

I''ve browse the internet looking for a mid entry reciever and found that this STR DB940 have a very good rating and decided grab one and i did. I Paid 2,000 Ringgi Malaysia or about US500. The sound produce by this amp is amazing in home theater especially when you use the cinema ex B sound field and hook it with a subwoofer for best sounding. For audio listening this amp deliver a good sound compare to my integrated Denon PMA390. Mine dosent have hissing sound claim by some reviewer unless you turn it to the max. there is slight hiss when the knob pass 12 and can be reduce by switching to analog direct (good for audio listening) I guest this is a value for money amp and you should grab it if you still can (no longer produce) conclusion : i give this amp 4 1/2 overall rating, nothing is perfect. my system: Philips Matchline RF69 TV Sony STR-DB940 reciever Pioneer DV-636D DVD player Pioneer CLD580 LD Player Samsung 5 changer CD player Samsung HI-FI VHS VCD player Advent Prodigy Tower Front, Rear, sharp centre Boshmann dual 10" sub drive by car poweramp

Strength:

Great DVD and CD playback. Gorgeous design and easy to use.

Weakness:

Strange noises and no CD optical

This AMP is perfect for someone with a limited budget. This is not to say it does''nt perform. DVD playback is excellent with the sound is both detailed and extremely powerful when playing back films like The Phantom Menace. The design is one of its best features and the looks best when in a rack accompanied by the rest of the QS range. Controlling the AMP takes a little while to pick up but once you understand the functions it becomes second nature. The control is excellent if a little slow. CD playback is great, many reviewers claim that the CD playback lacks power and definition, this is not true. On a downside the AMP produces a little Hum that can be irritating. Even worse from time to time the AMP will start to rattle extremely loudly. Pressing the AMP or turning it on and off stops this. This is not a fault on my model only as I have three friends who experience the same problem. No CD optical input is probably the worse thing about this AMP

Strength:

value, ergonomics

Weakness:

it's A/V receiver

To properly evaulate a hi-fi product one must place it into its context among other products and technology.

That said, the DB940 is excellent value for an A/V receiver. It is vastly superior to older mass market receivers (be it 5 or 2 channel performance). It is also well priced--offering above average sound quality and quite a bit of functionality with pretty clear ergonomics. The power is more than just about any home theater or moderately casual music listener will need and the same goes for inputs and crossover/programming flexibility.

With that said, it will not compare with quality seperates. When put up against the Proceed AVP and AMP5, you suddenly feel the music as never before. That is fair given the exponential increase in dollars; however, the premise remains, decent seperates (Proceed, Rotel, etc.) will give you more of the sonic experience all over the spectrum.
