Strength:

Nothing to add that hasn't already been written.

Weakness:

10 Second Delay on the Remote

I cannot add anything more to the review summary that has not been written. This Sony piece is a great receiver for the price. It has nice power, extremely customizable and generates a great sound.

The dealer who I bought this receiver from initially sold me an open box. There was a problem with communication from the remote to the receiver so I took it back and they gave me an unopened box in replacement. New one works like a champ.

I was concerned about the heat the Sony generated, so I purchased a small computer fan, added an electrical connection, plugged it into the switched outlet on the back of the receiver and now there is a considerable difference in the temperature inside the XBR400 stand. It's worth the $20 to protect your systems components in the future from excessive heat generated by the unit if it is contained.

Again, this is a great receiver in its price range that's been replaced by the STR-V555ES. If you can find the STR-DA777ES in someone's inventory, you will not be disappointed.

Strength:

Everything a receiver has to offer

Weakness:

This is to counter idiots like HK. I actually own the receiver so I know what I am talking about. This receiver is the king of Sony and blows other receivers out the door. The power is unmatched, as is the quality of sound for the price. Idiots like HK really give audioreview a bad name. HK- why don't you go back to grade school and play with the other kids, you don't belong here!

Strength:

Excellent Sound, Tweakability, Except for Theta and possibly Lexicon the best receiver bar none

Weakness:

Remote, no component video switching Sony's reputation for building inferior products

Thanks to a good relationship with a local dealer, I have been able to take home this receiver and a number of others. I am using an audiophile CAL CD player, as well as audiophile Snell speakers and a DVD player feeding in to a HDTV. I took home the products one by one, and did side by side comparison to another, keeping only the better one. The result was that after 4 weekends I still had the Sony, which could not be outdone by any of the other components.

To make this short, from a pre-amp perspective the Sony was by far the cleanest, and the power amps were the most powerful ones of the bunch. The possiblilities to tweak are unrivaled by any of the cometing products, and the ability to hook up a 5.1 channel component directly to the power amp makes it future proof for DVD-A.

I compared it too, at the dealer though, with a Lexicon, and that got close, and the Lexicon actually exhibited slightly better dynamics, but that's a $3000 pre-amp. I did not compare it to the Theta, but I have heard the Theta Casablanca on many occasions, and for me it's the pinnacle of design and sound, but again at $7500 and up for a pre-amp who are we kidding here. The Sony can be had for around $1000 and it comes with 5 very potent amps.

tho funny at first, now is it is getting annoying!

i myself do like this product and hk also has a right to his opinion.

it drives my speakers fine especially for dd/dts movies. for stereo, it is not as good as separates, but i can live it w/ it. if i truely want to listen to stereo i go to my listening rooms w/ separates. but overall i am happy with the 777es. i think it sounds a better than the denon 3300 or 4800 or the hk 7000. i feel the denons to be a bit muddy and hk i just didn't like at all. like the reviewer below said, it is all preference.

Strength:

nice build, user friendly

Weakness:

shabby sound, horrible sound image, terrible support of sub-20Hz frequencies

i was quite surprised at the emptiness of the sound produced from this unit. the sound image begins to break down disasterously at high volumes and the dts sound isn't even compareable to my yamaha. the sony offers lots and lots of features which is probably what they are most well known for, however they didn't bother at keeping the sound reproduction at par. the denon i auditioned sounded much better, however in the end my yamaha 800 was what i stuck with.

my system:

klipsh ksp300 mains
klipsh klfc-7 center
klipsh ksp-s6 surrounds
velodyne hgs-15 sub
yamaha rx-v995 receiver
sunfire cinema grand amp
sunfire vacuum tube preamp

RESPONSE TO NEIL HATCH:

you are obviously using horrible speakers, which would explain your taste in the sony receiver. i guess they wre made for eachother. you are a sony fanatic and that compromises your judgement to review this product objectively as i have. you are a fool to attack the 995 which is probably the most well built receiver as far as receiver's go. i don't get why you people are so insecure as to attack everyone that gives this product a sub-five-star review. the truth of the matter is that i compared the sony 777 and a yamaha 800 side by side in stereo mode using a harman kardon cd player optically and into my klipsh references demoing it in tracks like gustav mahlers syphony 5, bach's ave maria, chopin's nocturne and the sony did not not produce as well highs as the 800, the sound image was horrible as the speakers would not produce an exceptable soundstage (which it did in the yamaha). in kathy trocolli's everything changes, the vocals were flat (not in the 800). the bass was rumbly and sloppy in jon secada's just another day (still murky in my yamaha which suggests i need a better woofer, but far better as yamaha has more control over the bass response). i'd have more to say on the onkyo too (i think it's a bad value) but this isn't the place for it.
