Strength:

Clear crisp sound, good balance and Tone controls

Weakness:

Manual looks loke a photocopy with several pages missing
Digital decoders DTS & AC3 have never worked

If everything worked this would be an exceptional value buy.
The controls when figured out allow you to configure to a wide variety of room sizes and wall coverings. The volume control is gradual enough so you don't accidently wake the baby when things get a bit quiet in a movie.
The setup up of the links between Video & Audio combinations is simple.
However, the digital decoders have not worked since I purchased the unit new, luckily the DVD has inbuilt 5.1 decoder and the Sherwood has 5.1 analogue input. Attempts to get a responce from Agents and Distributors (Korea. USA & Australia) have not been fruitful and I would suggest this should be a concern to anyone buying this Brand / model

Strength:

reasonable power, 6 channel pre-in and pre-out, good sounding dolby and DTS

Weakness:

manual switching between analogue and digital input

I wasn't expecting very much since I only paid $220 CDN but when I took it home I was quite surprised. Although it doesn't seem to put out a lot of volume the quality was good. It sounded better than others costing twice the price. I never knew just how good my Mission 702e main speakers sounded, this amp brought the lower mids to life.
Perhaps it's not quite as bright as I like the sound but bumping up the treble a notch seems to help. Other nice features are the on screen display and the ability to turn off the display and lights.

Color interference using composite monitor out to TV

Overall, this unit is very good. The price can't be beat, and this was my first purchase off of Ubid. Sound quality is marvelous in stereo, very good in Circle Sound as well. I have Optimus speakers with the lineaum tweeters all around, and this receiver works very well with them.

The problem that I had was interference in the TV when the monitor out (composite)was hooked up on the receiver. I tried several interconnects, but the problem remained. I eventually went straight from DSS-VCR-TV as I had before, and the interference went away. I will try S-Video as soon as I have a TV compatible.

Anyway, this is a very nice receiver, and those of you who are on a budget couldn't do much better for under $200. I give this product 5 stars for value, and 4 stars overall.

Remote

Having worked profesionaly in retail audio for ten years I have had the
oppurtunity to demo many HT setups costing several thousand dollars and up over the years. However,I was never impressed enough to "convert" to multi channel. Recently my Sansui reciever developed a phantom problem in one channel and I decided it was time to get a new reciever. Two factors drove my decision to purchase a multi channel reciever, first my wife wanted one, and second most good two channel recievers cost far more than the multi channels and since family comes first now I needed something inexpensive. My wife had only one requirement, a good remote, but I had many requirements that could not be met by most of the recievers I looked at. I did a lot of research both here on the internet and in retail stores, including the national chains and some specialty shops. I no longer work in retail but still had some "hook-ups" or at least I thought. My heart was set on a Marantz and I could get one directly from the distributor through a friend. I went to a hi-end shop and must admit that I was not really impressed. I was looking at one of the lower end models. In stereo the Marantz ran out of power very early and this was with a pair of somewhat effecient speakers. I noticed that this reciever was very light. Not what I would expect from a Marantz. I decided that I would either have to wait so that I could afford one of the higher priced Marantz's or look elsewhere. While looking at the reviews for the Yamaha RXV620 I think, I somehow pulled up the Sherwood RD7106. I read through all the reviews and was impressed. One of my "wants" was pre-amp outputs. This is not a feature you can find on a reciever in the price range I was in. The only other one I could find with any output was a JVC that had digital out. Not really what I wanted but it was kept as a possiblility. I started looking around for the RD7106 and noticed that it seemed to become hard to find. I tried UBID as other reviewers had suggested but it loaded so slow and being a gen Xer I of course have no patience. Circuit City was only carrying one model, not even on Sherwoods web site, and it lacked the pre-amp outputs. Frys had none in stock or at least no knowledable person to try to help. I could find no specialty shop that carried Sherwood in my area, some laughed when I asked, even some of my old coworkers, so I started checking out Ebay. I looked at the complted ones and noticed they were starting to bring in more money. No doubt from the reviews here. They seemed to range from $130 to $270. I decided I would pay no more than $275.00 shipped and started bidding. I closed one at ~230.00 plus 30.00 shipping and waited for UPS. I told my wife I had purchased a Sherwood and she said what. She said isn't that one of the brands you used to make fun of. I said yea but the price i paid and the features it has far outweighed my concerns. On top of that I showed her the reviews here. Got my reciever and the first thing I noticed was that it was heavy. A lot heaver that I would have thought. Looking through the vents I noticed that the construction consists of several different boards with a nice big transfomer on the back left. It was too heavy for my wife to lift. I dug a toslink cable out of the garage and went to connecting everything up. The manual is helpful for the most part but could be better. It is definately not the worst one I have ever seen. We demo'd both stereo music and a movie on the first night and I was impressed. I have had the reciever for a week now and as far as stereo goes it sounds sweeter now then when I first fired it up. My speakers never sounded better. I originally wanted to purchase three more Marantz Mono blocks but I may not because it is definately not lacking in power. BTW my fronts are Eosone RSF-1000's. These were a line developed for sale at Best Buy by Arnie Nudell that never really did to well there because of price. I thought they sounded good before but now they sound incredible. So far I have only had one problem, that being while switching through surround sound modes the audio became out of sync with the movie we were watching. I restarted the DVD and the problem disappeared. That was using an optical connection between the DVD and the stereo. My only other complaint would be the remote and even though I think it is adequate it is akward to use with one hand. The buttons are not layed out well. I have tried to program the "universal" remote from my Hitachi TV with no luck(hell I can't even get that remote to work my Hitachi DVD) so oh well. I have not yet had any of the problems mentioned here. I sent my old cd player to the garage and am now using the DVD to play CD's. Also the video switching did not seemed to cause any change in picture quality. I highly recommend this reciever to anyone wanting a high end reciever at a low end price. The other recievers I looked at were the Marantz SR5200, Yamaha RXV-620, JVC RX7010 / 8010, Kenwood VR505,VR506 and the Outlaw 1050 available over the internet. With the exception of the Outlaw, being higher priced than the rest and not having demo'd it in person I can say that the Sherwood outperforms the rest. I have no regret and for the price even if it develops problems I will not feel bad. I apologize for the long review and will post a follow up once I have had it for some time.

many, AC3 is really good sound, OSD, 110x5 RMS. Runs cool considering power, and price range

Weakness:

volume likes to be really high.

I am previously used a sony es amp, loved the thing, it had lots of power! but it wasnt fully digital. so i saw a add in the local flyer for A&B, and it said 220.00 so i searched its model number up on the internet, and i saw a rave review from home theater magazine, and saw some posts online that people seemed to be satisfied with the amp, so i went and looked at it. the guy at the store is a good guy, he tryed to talk me out of getting the amp and getting a yamaha, such as the yamaha that i have in another room in the house, i told him i wanted the sherwood. I took it home, played with it for 3 hours, watched some movies on dolby digital threw the co-axle and it was really good defination, and bright! i like to play my movies loud, i also have 3 powered 12" subs hooked up, and have to pair of MONITOR 7 paradigm towers. it sounds goood, if you see it for 220 dollars like i did,
then consider this amp. :)

Strength:

Nice number of features, really nice sound, Any decoder you can think of is here(except of course for EX and ES 6.1/7.1, but for $349....)

Weakness:

I agree with others....it HAS to be the remote!!

At first I was skeptical about this receiver because it is being sold so cheap and lists so many features for the $349 I paid for it. It sounds great, the amps really surprised me, and the Dolby Digital rocks. I don't think that there is a better deal out there for bang for the buck. One thing that hasn't been stated about these great Sherwood receivers is that they are the only affordable receivers with 6 channel pre-amp outputs. There aren't many under $500, let alone at this price. I use mine as a pre-amp and run it into a 5 channel HK5800. Nothing can touch it for twice my investment.

Strength:

VERY clean sound; Dolby Digital, DTS, Circle Surround decoding; Inputs; Rated at 110 watts x 5

Weakness:

No "volume memory" (see below)

I'm sure your all thinking that I made a mistake when entering the price, well I didn't. It WAS, however, a mistake on FRY's part. I called FRY's, not once but twice, and the guy told me that they had the 7106 on sale for $97. When I arrived there I found that the 7106 was NOT $97 but it was $349. The guy obviously mistaked it for another model. I asked a sales associate and he denied everything. To make a long story short, there was a lot of arguing and conversations with two managers before they agreed to let me have it for $97.

On to the review...
Before I bought this reciever I bought the YAMAHA-5280. Don't get me wrong, the YAMAHA is not a bad reciever, it's just not as good as the Sherwood(it suprised the hell out of me, too). The Sherwood 7106 is one heck af a machine. I hooked it up and immediately played some movies(Saving Private Ryan-DTS, Gladiator-DTS, The Mask of Zorro-Digital 5.1). After comparing the two, I immediately returned the YAMAHA. The sound that the 7106 produces is clean and very clear and the DTS/Digital decoding was top-notch and it has an on-screen display. The Sherwood is said to have only 100w x 5 but after doing some tests and contacting Sherwood of America, I learned that it, like the YAMAHA, has 110w x 5. Another advantage of the 7106 is the extra Circle Surround decoder. This decoder makes music(radio, cd's, MP3's) as well as TV shows and mono movies sound GREAT!! The 7106 is a VERY exceptional value, even at the $349 price or the M.S.R.P. of $599. I eventually added it to the Sherwood-6090 through the pre-outs and 5.1 inputs. As if the 7106 wasn't enough by itself, the two combined are now capable of pushing around 900 total watts.

One of the only weaknesses that I found with this reciever is the way you have to select the inputs and surround mode. Instead of a on-button push, you have to cycle through using the on-screen display or press the button about five times until you find the one you want. Another weakness is it has no "volume memory" for each input. I watch DVD's(Video-1 input) with the volume set at 45-50 (out of 85) and listen to the radio(Tuner) or CD's(CD-1 input) at 15-20. Because there is no "volume memory" for each input, if you forget to turn the volume down before listening to music after wastching a movie, you're in for a LOUD suprise. If you can get used to these flaws, which I soon enough will, I guarantee that you'll love this reciever.

Strength:

Excellent Audio quality, flexibility, build quality, great performance on movies. Excellent price!

Weakness:

Thought I would never say it in a review but the remote looks and feels like it came from a fisher price toy!

This receiver is outstanding! After reluctanly sending my defective Newcastle 925 back to u-bid, I went back into search mode, I auditioned all of the ABC receivers such as denon, onkyo, yanaha etc. But my heart was set on another Sherwood or a Marantz sr400, neither of which I could get locally so auditioning first was out. Having enjoyed my brief encounter with the newcastle, and based on al of the great feedback I got from users and dealers as well, I decided on the Sherwood.

The RD 7106 was a challenge to set up but once we got it, it really performed. I was looking for a receiver which would perform well on music as well as movies. Having been spoiled years ago by my British made Cambridge P35, this receiver would have to really perform to get my vote.

First let me say that this receiver blew my Harmon Kardon out of the water when it comes to clarity and sound quality on music. I sampled a wide variety of music from Casandra Wilson's "Blue Light Til Dawn" CD to the Police, John Coltrane, Diana Kral and Andres Vollenweider. I even tried a Robert Johnson CD but sadly no receiver at any price can help that CD, after all it was recorded in the early 1930's and sounds as if it was recorded in a shoebox!

The 7106 really caused my B&W DM601's to wake up. My HK had never made these speakers shine. With the 7106 I could hear detail that just wasn't there with the HK. Of course the Sherwood will also play much louder, but then I would expect it to at double the watts.

Movies were a real treat. I am not a FX only guy, in fact about 60% of the movies I watch are from the 1930's to the early 60's, but when I heard the great detail on movies and the in your face bass I was impressed! I had intended to buy a subwoofer soon, but this receiver and the B&W's provided enough clean, solid bass that I have decided to put that money into a better center channel speaker instead. Keep in mind I am not a bass freak so I am not saying that you will feel the same way.

My only complaint is that the remote is not universal and really sucks. It looks very cheap, but it does what it is supposed to do. This is not a big problem because I would rather they put the effort into building a quality receiver, must of us aren't really happy with the remote that comes with any receiver anyway. And besides that I already have a One for all Cinema Seven.

I consider this amp an exceptional value. I would recommend it for anyone looking for a great receiver that performs well above it's price category. It is solidly built, sounds great, and has just the right amount of flexibility. I also like the non cluttered face because I am not a big bells and whistles guy. Oh yes, the cinema EQ works well, we tested it extensively, however I won't be using the hall and stadium modes that much. I know I must sound like I work for Sherwood, but I am just really impressed, it help me get over my depression of having to send the newcastle back!
