In trying to strike a balance between music & HT I listened to the Denon 3200 & the Pioneer 906. In my opinion a tie. Pioneer had a bit more power (100w per channel vs. 85w), an excellent remote & easy accurate setup for the surrounds. In the end it came down to $$$ difference ($825 for the Pioneer, $1,050 for the Denon). I don't think you could go wrong with either receiver but based on cost the Pioneer provides more bang for the buck.

I should first point out that the rating I am giving this receiver is not based on sound quality (explanation to follow).
I bought one of these through mail order, and when I set it up, I could not get the DD processor on it to work. I returned it (thinking this must have been a one off) and received another one to replace it. Well guess what, the replacement one did not work either! I finally gave up. As far as I am concerned, once is just bad luck, but two times means bad build quality.

I don't want anyone to think I am Pioneer bashing here -- I have a Pioneer 505 Laser Disc player that works great. I just feel that with other low cost alternatives out there, Pioneer receivers should be avoided. I bought a Kenwood 990D (now discontinued) for less money, and was very pleased (and it worked!).

I would suggest anyone considering this receiver, to look at the DD Kenwood 1080VR instead (it can be had mailorder from Hardin's for under $500 shipped).

Well I have had the 906 for 3 weeks now and feel that I can give an honest opinion. I believe it will take that long to aquaint yourself with all the extra's and the GUI that in my book is probably one of the best on the market. The DPL in this unit is far superior than in my last Pioneer Reciever the 5600.
You really do feel the "Surround Sound". The Dolby Digital is simply funtastic. For you who don't yet own a DD reciever but do have Dolby Surround let me explain the difference. When I use surround the bass and explosions seem to surround you and you hear very little of anything else. With DD you hear the explosions even louder and clearer but you can also hear whispers in the back ground if that is intended. I feel as though my hearing has increased 100%. I've been taking every DVD I own and watching it again with DD and I have been experiancing a whole new movie. The remote to this unit is also very good and has replaced every thing I own. The price was right for me $702.00 delievered and it's worth a lot more as far as I am concerned. I Bought the 906 3 weeks ago and turn it on as soon as I get home and off when I go to bed. A truly great reciever for the money.

I've had this unit for two weeks now and am quite happy with it.
Definitely the best buy for the $$. It appears to be closely related to the Elite VSX-07TX & 09TX models. A snap to set up and configure - on screen GUI is ugly but understandable. As noted by others, the manual is all but unusable.

Separation in DD mode is awesome - verging on disturbing for friends who experience it for the first time. Dolby Surround does just fine. Remote has done everything I've asked of it including a power on/off sequence for my Runco that 2 other learning remotes couldn't handle.

Video switching (am using composite) appears very clean when compared to my older external box.

My only (and minor) gripe is that FM reception is much weaker than I would like with just a simple dipole. I'll have to add a better antenna that my previous tuner (Luxman) did not require.

I've had this receiver now for about four months and have it connected to the Energy Take 5 system. After this period of time and having listened to wide variety of music and movies, my opinion is that it is the best receiver on the market for the money.

Well, I just ordered my 906 today... I'll keep my fingers crossed that somehow I get a Euro/Asian model with the THX... PowerBall anyone?
Anyways, it'll be at my door, $649.95 shipped and delivered...

I'll be back with my reviews hopefully sometime next week.

RIght off the cuff though, I've been a Pioneer devotee and have relied on my sub $3K (didn't pay anywhere near that, mail order is the ticket) VSX-DS1 (pre digital) for the last eight years, and other than the fact you could not control the recording source from the remote, it has been the most amazing, rock-solid (knock on wood...) piece of equipment that I have owned. I AM sad to see
that Pioneer has reduced their once satisfying 6 video / 6 audio inputs at the back (with video override on the front panel) down to 4v / 5a at the back with an additional video at the front panel. Kind of makes it tough when you have a hi8 deck, S-VHS deck, ED-beta, DVD/LD, DSS and a spare LD for recording while viewing something else... Oh well... I guess you get what you pay for.

Or maybe not... I considered both the VSX-D07TX and the VSX-D09TX, and other than a stiffer power supply, 10 more watts in stereo mode (same power at the 906 in home theatre mode...), and a few items that may add up to more than just bells or whistles. However, at nearly $500.00 more, I'm not sure if the lacquer and rosewood make up for it...

Well, enough rattle and hum... I'll let you know what I think when the FedEX guy gets here... By the way, I ordered the PDF-1006 also, for $285.95, delivered. If you're not aware, that is the 101-disc CD changer with keyboard titling entry and integrated GUI I/O with the VSX-D906S.

Talk to you guys later...

My start rating is what my expectations are with Pioneer history. Maybe once it gets here, hopefully I'll get the opportunity to bump that up a bit...

Fingers crossed, Craig...

I have had this reciever for about 4-5 months and so far it has been the best one I've had to date. The price is great, and the sound is outstanding, although I noticed that Pioneer made 2 models of this reciever, the one with THX and the one without. Luckily, I have the THX model- and when it's in THX mode- the sound is simply amazing.

This receiver is one of the worst i have ever heard. The sound does not sound anything like as if it were using MOSFET Output Transistors which is said that it does. The Power supply is weak and it has a poor Dynamic Range. For this price i would expect it to have a Higher Ch. Sep. than 60 db which is the DD Standard. I bought the Sony STR-DE915 and it was alot better. instead of using a Power Surge Chip it used Discreter Ouput Transistors which can deliver a louder power surge. The Ch. Sep. was probably about 96 db and the Dynamic Range was great. The main fault was the S/N Ratio which can easily be fixed by a D-NR Cell. The Pioneer receiver also had the worst DAC Performance. It was only a 1-bit DAC compared to Sony's Hybrid-Pulse DAC (4-Bit). The DSP was also poor. There was either too much reverb in a single channel or too little. The REVERB was also very poor. instead of just hearing it sooth out i heard it sound more like a delay set on about 10 ms. Right now I have a Sony STR-GA90ESG with Polk Audio CS350LS(Center) RT800p (Front Bi-Amplifiable) RT F/X (Surround set on Bipole) and a Polk PSW 150 (Subwoofer). This system is the best for Mid-Class Home Theaters.

I Bought the international version (906) for $799 (the one with THX and a multivoltage Power Supply. I really love the sound quality and for the price compared to the Yahama-2092 you can't go wrong. Don't buy this receiver for CD Music Playing... You can buy better. But for Home Theater Use, Buy, Buy, Buy...And look for the THX model it's great for VHS Tapes. The Remote Rocks...
I almost ordered one instead of buying the receiver. Much better than a $20.00 Universal.

A terrific product with all the features needs to really tune up a room. The remote control is nice to use, and once comfortable with it, takes over and replaces the remotes for all the other components in the system. A friend also has one of these units, and has had some trouble with the lettering wearing off the remote control, but haven't seen anything like that so far. Sound quality is very nice, dsp modes for music work very well without sounding unrealistic. This receiver has the power necessary to really shake the room.
Very happy with it, and easy to set up as well.
Cost in Canada runs about 1,010.00$.
