to the person who could not play JP III at more than -47db, there must be something wrong with your receiver, i suggest you have it looked at. i consistently watch action movies such as t2, die hard, matrix, etc in DD and DTS and i usually watch them at at least -25db, without it cutting out once (with loudness on).

Strength:

Plenty of hookups, good sound, cheap, reliable(so far)

Weakness:

Cuts out fairly easily...would highly reccommend an amp

for the price, the receiver is amazing. the setup is quite easy, similar to any other receiver, and as usual the manual isn't amazaing, but if you have had any experience with HT before, you will have absolutely no trouble. The rpice listed on the pioneer is way more than you should pay.... it said 460 canadian,i paid 300,don't get ripped off when u buy it. If the price seems to high, barter it down. Anyway, back to the actual receiver. It provides very clean sound(for it's price range at least), and can be customized to suit your needs perfectly... a little more options dealing with treble and bass would be nice, as well as an option to control the mids, but for the price im not complaining too much. The bass is still a little weak for my tastes, explosions dont sound quite as loud as they should, although adding a powered sub would get rid of this problem. Aesthetically, this receiver is very pleasing and looks better than receivers costing twice as much. My only real gripe is that it cuts out fairly easily. Playing Linkin Park(heavy guitars, loud yelling, tons of bass) with bass turned up all the way, and loudness turned on, it cut out at -33dB...granted i could hear the music clearly through my house at this level... more power would be appreciated. A good amp would get rid of this problem. Overall, still an excellent buy for the money.

Strength:

Great bass, easy to set up and mess with, EXCELLENT for its price

I was on a budget for my system so I picked up this one because of the good reviews and pioneer is a good name. The bass (LW-12 subwoofer) is great for on thing! My music rocks the house and movies are sweet on this thing! Check this one out

Strength:

Can't go wrong with the price, you get a really good system

Weakness:

the remote sucks, and the unit is a little to big.

I'm very happy, it does the job for the room I have it in, I had this system in my apartment before I moved and the sound was perfect with out bothering the neighbors.

Now, I have the system in my house and it's not a big room, so it's perfect. I would not recommend it for a big room HT setup.

As for the bad part, the remote, it's not that great and I wish the volume controls would be bigger. When I'm watching a movie at night, I always make the mistake of graving the Toshiba remote; they look very similar in the dark.

Bottom line, I’m very happy with it and I truly enjoy watching DVD’s now and for me a high end Receiver would have been an overkill because of the room size.

Cheap. Real Cheap.

I just bought this receiver three days ago as my X'mas gift.I am totally disappointed with its performance.

It cuts out so easily. When I play Jurassic Park III DVD on it (I set the volume to -37dB with Mid-night mode = ON), it cut out more than 15 times. End up I had to turn down the volume to -45dB to finish the movie.

I tried to return it to the shop that I bought it from. However, they don't make any exchange or refund for any boxing day sales item. So bad. I would highly appreciate if anyone can tell me how can I improve its cut-out performance.

Strength:

Dolby Digital/DTS Decoder built-in, coax & optical inputs, PRICE!

Weakness:

REMOTE, there is no question about it, it sucks! Lack of more digital inputs, no s-video jacks. But for the price you can't beat it.

After researching a new receiver to upgrade my HT I had decided on the D510. I Based the decision on the reviews here and what my budget would allow, since I am also going to get a decent sub.

Unfortunately I was at Sams Club and saw a Kenwood VR 505. It was running $149.00 and boasted the same features as the Pioneer. So I bought it, and after fiddling with it for about an hour realized it wasn't nearly the same unit. The thing it lacked most was a DTS decoder built-in. It said DTS on the box and the spec sheet on the display unit but no where did they mention it needed a decoder in your dvd player or external unit until you read the fine print in the manual. So back to the store it went and I went to Best Buy to get the Pioneer.

OK Everyone said it, you should just expect it, the remote blows big time. It really sucks, there is no question about it. I don't know who designs these things but they really should have their head examined or be forced to use the remotes over and over again. The thing is the D850 which is their top of the line before entering the Elite series is just as bad, so it's not because the reciever is cheaper that they throw in a crappy remote.

Everyone says lack of inputs / outputs are a disappointment. If you want a Pioneer with more inputs then spring for the D810 or D850 they have them. This receiver is not their top end model and that is why it lacks all the bells and whistles. That said it still is a great deal for the $$$.

I have a Sony 35" Trinitron with the matched base, there is only so much room in it and it is maxed out. All I can fit inside the base is the receiver, dvd player, vcr, satellite box. I don't need a cd player for the family room, the dvd fits the bill for that. I doubt I will get Tivo, so the lack of inputs is not an issue for me right now.

I have my DVD player hooked up thru the digital coax, the vcr using rca jacks, satellite using rca jacks and the tv using rca jacks. The dvd video out is S-Video to my TV directly, so everything works and I still get great quality.

I decided to get the D510 to save money and be able to purchase a decent sub, which will make a world of difference from my original passive unit. I figured that was money better spent. If I need to replace the receiver in the next 5 years then I can look for a higher end unit but right now I saved $230 from jumping to the D810 at $399 so for me it was worth it.

Don't be afraid to give this unit a try it might suprise you!

I am giving the unit a 5 star value rating, for $169.00 you can't beat it. It is getting an overall 4 star rating just because of the remote.

Strength:

Low price, pretty good sound

Weakness:

Bass isn't that good, but then again, I'm not using a sub right now. Loudness setting doesn't sound good with movies.

For the money, this is a good receiver. I've heard better, but at higher prices. This is the first Pioneer receiver I have used and it sounds really good. The bass is virtually nonexistent, however. Right now I'm only using a pair of Technics floorstanding speakers. I plan on purchasing a subwoofer in a few months so that would take care of the bass problem. Besides that, this is a good sounding receiver, especially for under $200.
