Strength:

Good power for a unit this modest. Controls easy to use. Good documentation.

Weakness:

Poor tone control. Boomy bass with poor transition to higher frequencies. Fairly noticable clipping when pushed for extended periods. RELIABILTY STINKS!

Would not recomend this system to anyone but a novice who is tone deaf. It is an affordable unit for use in non critical listening environment. Not suitable for anyone who is used to lots of clean reliable power and fine adjustment of tone controls.

Strength:

Power without distortion. Bass handling.

Weakness:

subwoofer depending wiring. The original wiring diagram puts the subwoofer as a distribution box to the other speaker boxes.

Very good entry level home theater receiver. I've used a Surround test CD (DE-3179 from Delos Digital Recording) to make an overall performance analisys of VSX-455. The results was very good. Bright trebles, good transient peaks handling and very good bass response.
I would buy it again!

PROS: The sound was good. Power was good. Features were good. CONS: The 5D sound processing was defective in all the models I tried. This to me, is unacceptable so I returned it & exchanged it for something else.
Overall:
If this receiver had not had a manufactured defect in it, I would have been happy with it. However, having such a defect did not entice me to keep it around for very long. Who can be happy with defective merchandise? I didn't even keep it long enough to make a fair judgement on the features that worked.

Strength:

This is a powerful full featured unit. I have had this system for over a year and not once has it stopped performing the excat way I have expected. Yes, you can buy better systems, but not at this price.

Weakness:

The only weakness this unit has is it has a very unusual, but very programable remote..needs better info in the manual!!

I would reccomend this to all entry or mid entry systems.

Strength:

A really good prologic system for the price; extremely robust and efficient. decent sound quality.

Weakness:

A slightly loud hum. But for the entry-level class which it belongs to, that is okay.

I bought this receiver in 1996 when it first came out.
Got it at a steal at $200 from Best Buy. To this date
I have driven many kinds of speakers on it and have
never been unhappy with its performance. Right now, I'm
driving a pair of Wharfedale Valdue 500s (which are supposed to be 4 ohms ?) with it and still the receiver
puts up with the load !.
In the 4 years I've had it , never once it has given me any
problems. I would recommend this receiver (or its newer
version) wholeheartedly to any entry-level buyer.
