Strength:

Lots of features for the money

Weakness:

Very warm. Remote light should stay on a bit longer. I have heard some crackling sounds in the rear speakers.

Altogether I am very happy with this receiver! I think it is a good value and a good receiver to start with. My prior receiver was an old 1968 Kenwood TK-55. I have had no complaints from my friends.

I bought this from Laser City in San Francisco while on a business trip for $600. They were great to deal with and mailed it back for me. I previously had Rotel seperates but this is also very good, and hard to beat for the price. I would not hesitate to recommend the 24TX to anyone!! I don't care for some of the effects but I think that applies to most others I've heard too. It seems to pair well with the Klipsch 8.5s and SC-1 center.

Don't claim to know much about all the confusing geeky techno mumbo. But I do know that the ability to upgrade is a must. VSX-24tx was the only receiver in its price range to offer future channel upgrades (ie Star Wars 4 will come out with 6.1 channels.) I hate it when I open a box to a product that is already obsolete. The 24 ensures this does not happen. I went in to the store focused on Marantz and Onkyo. Walked out with the 24. The controls are difficult but I don't need my kids knowing how to turn it on anyways. Can't say more but that it sounds and looks excellent.

Strength:

Well crafted, great sound, ample power, expandability.

Weakness:

None. (OK one. The backlight on the remote should stay on a little longer.)

Excellent choice. I looked at similar products from Denon, Yamaha and Onkyo. None of them could match the features provided by Pioneer.

24TX has on-screen display, s video switching, pre out and a programmable remote. Hard to find all these features at this price range.

I am very happy with this product.

The whole unit

Weakness:

Remote

I may not be a very expierence music listener, or even a Home Theatre enthusiast, but I do know a good product when I see one. The Pioneer 24TX is truly a one stop unit. It decodes Dolby Digital, DTS and is THX certified ( Select ) for small rooms like mine.

The s-video switching is great since my rear projection TV only has one.

I have been able to attached all my components and still have much room left for whatever I decide to buy.

I am very happy and now plan to purchase an Elite DVD player and CD Changer.

This is a response to Eugene's post

I'm shocked that you would even compare the Elite 24TX to the Sony 777ES. The Sony is almost twice the price! Try comparing the 24TX to something in its price range before you bash it, OK?

I've already posted about this receiver, but now that I have spent more time with it, I can't say enough about it. Features, inputs, remote, power, it's got it all for the mid-range enthusiast. Granted it's not as powerful as some higher priced amps/receivers, it's got plenty of clean power and accurate response for music and home theatre.

Sorry for my barking, but someone's got to speak up!

Digital inputs, Remote Control, Sound

Weakness:

None So Far

I must say that I did not think that much of Pioneer. That is until I saw the Elite line of receivers. The receiver had a very elegant look to it, and the sound is incredible.

When it was time to make a choice, it was between the Pioneer Elite and the Sony 555ES. As you are aware I have the Pioneer sitting at home, surrounding me with it's glory.

It has enough inputs for all your needs, and has a 6 input for future decoders. It has pre outs for all channels, and subwoofer pre outs.

The learning remote control does what it says. It control all my other units, and I have not had any problems.

Overall I have had a very good time with this unit, and now I am looking at the Pioneer Elite DVD player to match with the 24TX.

Strength:

Amplifier quality, THX select, plenty of inputs, excellent soundstage

Weakness:

Remote light turns off too quickly, runs hot

An excellent receiver for the price. I hesitated in purchasing another receiver as I did not particularly care for the brashness of the Denon unit I had. This Pioneer unit has incredible soundstage and smoothness through the highs. A superior receiver in this price range ($799 on sale).

Strength:

POWER
EXCELLENT FIDELITY
DESIGN AND MANY FEATURES THAT YOU WOULD NEED TO PAY TWICE ON OTHER BRANDS THAT YOU WOULD GET IN THIS RECIEVER

Weakness:

LACKING AN EXCEPTIONAL REMOTE.

I believe that for an entry level reciever that this is the best one out there.
I mainly believe that when people first here the pioneer name the first thing that comes to mind would be a sub par preformance.I will say that whoever thinks that is sadly mistaken. This reciever was compared to a denon 3801 and an onkyo 777. All used the same speakers "paradigm" and subwoofer "veledyne" in a very bad room for acuostics. We tested on the three recievers a panasonic dvd player at a very high volume level. All preformed well but the pioneer exceeded expectations. Due to the Digital noise reduction feature on the pioneer elite. Excellent buy and is a hell of a lot better than the new Onkyo's and the Denon.
