Strength:

- Great sounds, even at lower volumes. - Easy to use, more than enough inputs and outputs for me. - Pure Audio playback. - Phono input. - 6.1 surround output. - Great remote, can control other infrared devices, and lights up in the dark. - Sleep timer (very useful, since I use this in my bedroom right now).

Weakness:

- Rumbles with vinyl playing at higher volumes (probably a problem with my set up). - Probably not worth the extra money over the TX-SR600, unless having the phono input is a must for you.

I am surprised this receiver has not gotten better reviews so far. I am a big Onkyo fan. They make very high quality components, and seem to be some of the best you can get for the money. I have compared this to the cheaper SR500 and SR600 models, and this outshines both of them as far as sound quality goes. The reasons I went with this receiver were not only that it is 6.1, but also has a built in phono input, as well as "pure audio mode." I also got it at a good price, admittedly. Pure Audio is a neat feature, because it ensures that you get the best possible sound, without extra equalization. I am only using this receiver in a stereo set up right now, so I can't comment on how it sounds with full surround playback. I have a pair of Bose 301 V speakers connected to it, and can honestly say that I love the sound I am getting right now. Tuner gets good reception, though the included antennas are crap that I replaced with a good dipole FM antenna and a Radio Shack AM loop antenna. I'm also using this with an Onkyo DVD changer for CDs, and the sound I get is very pure and enjoyable. Vinyl playback is great as well, though I have a slight problem with rumbling at higher volumes. If you are looking for a good mid-level 6.1 receiver, I'd highly recommend this, although the SR600 is probably good enough for most people.

DTS ES, Digital EX, PLII, Remote Control Backlit, Composite video signal to Svideo conversion.

Weakness:

Volume control, not enough sound adjustment to play around with to suit your taste.

After couple of hours of trying to figure out what the heck is going on, i finally manage to figure out how to get the best sound out of this Reciever. The best i've ever had so far, Movie sounds never been better around my home theatre room. One word only "Awesome" (on movies)

Strength:

video conversion.

Weakness:

lacks depth for music. No sub output in Pure Audio or Direct Audio mode.

I purchased a 2002 model of the Onkyo SR700 a few months ago from onecall.com. After researching receivers for months, my choice came down to Onkyo for a few reasons. One, a friend of mine has had Onkyo for years and after listening to his receiver play on several occassions, led me to Onkyo. Secondly, it is one of very few receivers in it's price range that provides video conversion. I am able to supply the SR700 composite video and the amp converts it to S-Video. I would agree with other reviews on this amp that for music, the SR700 sounds shallow and has no depth. But for movies, the SR700 really delivers!

Strength:

Price - Affordable for its specifications WARRANTY! - Onkyo gives a full 2 years! this i have to see with Denon and Yamaha dealers in manila (most offer 6 months warranty .. for authorized dealers of denon/yamaha .. 1 year if you twist their arms) Acceptable Audio Quality Future-Ready with 50MHz component video outs Applicable for 2 room use (room 2 capable) Great Bass and Treble Cute Remote - Glows in the dark Legacy of Onkyo making solid products Speaker terminals are color coded volume mutes out when you change modes/change inputs setup is 'tweakable'

Weakness:

Tedious First Time setup (took me 3-4 hours just for all my speakers to sound 'acceptable') even for a techie who loves to tweak .. i guess that is the price for having to configure lots of speakers would have loved more optical and coaxial inputs and outputs .. then again most of my stuff here is analog so its moot on the tech side, i love the heatsink/power transistor layout of yamaha, plus the fact they make their own chips.. alas onkyo subcontracts chipmakers for them (hope that next time they have their own chip and the heatsink layout inside the reciever is more efficient)

Well, when my Fisher Quadrophonic Reciever Died (circa 1973) with 4x25 or 2x50 rms rating, i was in the market for a new reciever. I wanted basically something that would drive the stuff that i have here (front speakers are Bose AM-5II,center speakers are Bose Video 100 and Surround are Cerwin-Vega AT-8),LD/CD is a Pioneer CLD S260 and TV is a 29" Sony Trinitron .. anyway i have auditioned similar products like the Denon 1602, Denon 1603, Denon 1802, Denon 1803,Denon 2802 Onkyo TX-SR600,Onkyo TX-DS797,Yamaha RX-V800,Yamaha RX-V630, Yamaha RX-V120 .. it all boiled down to what my real needs are. Bang for the buck, warranty and support. I Have to say that i am partial with the Denon recievers because they were the 'accurate' sounding ones but hey .. in Manila, Denons are more expensive than Yamahas and the least of the evils is Onkyo with acceptable accuracy with music. I still have to get the DVD player of Onkyo too (the DV-SP500) since progressive scanning DVD players here are still priced in the stratosphere. (Denon's 2800MkII's are priced even way beyond the recievers matched to them, so goes the pioneer models) Anyway I am very satisfied with the 'compromise' i made, im just a techie with a knack for tweaks and onkyo is it. Probably when i get more money i will invest in Denons, but for the meantime, Onkyo will be the ones playing my videos and music

Strength:

If the media you are playing is recorded well, this sounds great for both stereo and surround playback.

Weakness:

If the media is older (IE. not surround) it can be a little tinny.

For the price of this middle range receiver, you can't expect more than it delivers. It is awesome. If you are looking for more it will be hard to find. The wattage is great for powering my passive sub (BOSE AM-7). I've compared it to similar models in Marantz(SR7200), Yamaha(RX-V1300), HK(AVR520) and Denon (AVR2802)and the Onkyo beats them all in Movie playback and Music. The only receiver that actually came close was the yamaha and if clarity is what you are looking for then go with that one. However I am more interested in "feeling" a movie during the fight scenes and such so the Onkyo was a better fit for me. The Balrog scene in Lord of the Rings and Massive Attacks, Mezzanine CD, track #1 sounds awesome. Check it out! I got mine at Cambidge Soundworks in the Great Mall..they'll hook you up!

Strength:

Good remote Good surround decoding Pure audio mode

Weakness:

only one coaxial digital input poor 2 channel music reproduction - it lacks punch and depth Pure audio AND direct mode bypass subwoofer so you need a full range front speakers to take advantage of it.

I have to agree with afrost that 2 channel music sounds less than ideal compared to my previou system. My old setup were separates with an Adcom GFA-5400 amp and a Sony SP9ES digital pre-amp with the same NHT Super One speakers that I am using with the SR-700. For serious audiophiles I would suggest using a more decent stereo amp for listening in 2 channel mode. In surround mode, the receiver is very good. I particular like the new DTS-ES, DD-EX decoding over my previous 5-channel Dolby Digital setup.

Strength:

easy setup, good remote, plenty of inputs and outputs, onkyo has a good history of quality control, "pure audio" mode is a must have feature for any receiver

Weakness:

96 khz dacs on everything but the front two channels, crappy power amps(you can tell by how much it weighs and i could hear it), no gold plated connectors

2002 model I have only had this for about a week but I just wanted to warn everyone that this sounds like crap for two channel music. I hooked up a rotel power amp for the L/R front speakers and now it sounds great. I am now pretty happy with my setup. It sounds really good for movies over my previous two channel setup. I'm sure it would all sound even better with a five channel power amp for everything. I will probably be happy with this amp for now.

Strength:

Power per channel 6 speaker capabilities HDTV switching Dolby II DTS-ES <--incredible

Weakness:

Brassy Highs in music --also digital music has limited adjustments over tone.

Hooked up the 700 and found a very clear difference over my 575X. Hands down clear 6 speaker movie sound. Dolby 2 is a cut above the ole 2.0 version. It's amazing how the rear channels now seem to have sparkle! It meets and exceeds my volume requirement as well.

Strength:

Multi Functions, Zone 2, more than enough power, easy setup, and got it for a great price.

Weakness:

None yet

Well I haven't even came close to learn everything this Rec. can do. But so far I'm very pleased with it, easy setup, Manual is not to complicated, on screen display is big help. Multi functions are great, Zone 2 is not setup yet but will be soon a plus there. I have it set up with NHT's SB2's for fronts and surround SC1 for center and SW10 sub. This is a great setup for HT and do not have any complaints for Music either.
