ONKYO TXDS939THX has quality control problem. The first one I got cut the sound off after I played it with CD for 20 minutes. Astonishingly, second one I got had the same problem. The third one was fine finally.
The sound quality was good. It had enough details and clear levels.

The attenuator of volume control generated some "hiss" noise. This is the main reason I decided to returned it and got Yamaha DSP A1.

The DSP processing is far behind from Yamaha DSP A1. There was no any surprise when watching movie. It was a hassel to change DSP mode. DSP mode was not impressive at all. Most time, I listened music with stereo mode(DSP off).

The microphone supposedly to setup speaker level automatically was inaccurate.

Tuner was good.

Apparance and finish was well done and beautiful.

The manual was not informative.

The removal control was well designed and easy to learn.

Specifications and price tag mean nothing! This product has no equal without going to discretes. Don't worry about DTS or 6.1 decoding, this unit will blow you away with just AC-3. At ANY volume (including whisper quite) the sound is crystal clear with dynamics I can't begin to describe. Anybody considering investing in a theatre, owe themselves a visit to the following website...
http://www.onkyo.co.jp/www_e/thingsyoushould/thingsyoushould.htm

This site also has a very technical section on the construction of the Onkyo products.

Just for reference I also own (and absolutely love) the following:

Hitachi ??? (old 31" TV)
Onkyo DX-C340 (6 CD carousel player)
Panasonic A110 (DVD player)
Panamax 1000+ (surge suppressor)
JVC SR5400U (Super VHS)
RCA DSS (3rd generation)
Velodyne VA1215 (amazing SUBWOOFER)
Polk Audio CS350 (center speaker)
Polk Audio RT800 (left & right fronts)
Polk Audio LS/fx (left & right rears)

All this connected exclusively with Monster Cabling. My favorite demo DVD is Super Speedway.

I have owned my Onkyo 939 for 2 years and have enjoyed every minute of it.It is the best home theater money can buy. Many people are hesitant to buy this receiver because it lacks DTS processing. Please don't let this alter your decision. DTS is not taking off like AC3 with the public or manufacturers and never will. Yes DTS is a great format but AC3 Dolby Digital is the standard for DSS and the up and coming HDTV transmission. I have spoken with a company that makes after market processors and they said that they will make a DTS processor that is backwards compatible for any receiver if DTS becomes popular. Back to the receiver... Appearance, performance, and versatility are superior. The DSP modes are crisp and well balanced provided that you have the right mode with the proper mover or event. THX is awesome!!! In a nut shell, THX makes any movie sound close...very close to dolby digital. At least with laser discs. It seperates the rear surrounds into two channels instead of one. This is excellent if you're listening to a non AC3 movie. The power handling is almost too much. I can't turn the dial more than half way without shattering the windows or getting the wife in an uproar. The test mike is nice but your speakers must be positioned perfectly. I prefer setting up the speakers manually. The only negative is the tuner. You can't scan your stations and the reception seems week. Also, there is a delay when switching DSP modes which makes it difficult to compare to each other. Over all, it's a best buy. I still keep my eye out for new receivers but there has yet to be a valid competitor. My advice, go buy one today. If you ever have any questions about this receiver or anything pertaining to home theater, email me anytime. Also, look for my future review on the Mirage 595i's and the Mirage OM-10's which will be posted in about 90 days. I haven't received them yet but they're enroute and I'll need time to give them a thorough test for both music and home theater. "Life is good"

hi jack
i think that you did the right thing.
the 939 is much better receiver than the dsp-a1,and
much more better then the onkyo 777.
i think that maybe the denon 5700 is little better or
equal to the 939.
i don't know why people spend so much money for the
dts . i have some movies in dts and i think that
ac-3 is a better system for movies(i herd those movies in dts and ac-3 in the denon and the yamaha and have the same resolt ac-3 sounded better in movies).
about dts cd's the 939 sound is fabulous.but there is so little selection and it's so hard to find the dts cd's that i dont know if it's worth it.
about why you don't like the sound of dts movies it's because you have to install the data to the dsp mode,
read the menu and intall all the data like the menu to
all the prologic modes and all the others dsp mode.
i want to add now power amplifier to my main speakers
to increase the sound quality in stereo.
maybe you can recommend on any good power but it must be in
champagne.

thanks
ehud
