This is a follow-up to my Jan 2000 post...
My unit is still kicking maximum butt, but has exposed a few flaws in my sys. This is a good, win-win thing.

Unit is sensitive to any imperfecions or damage in cable used. I wonder how many people having problems with this model have damaged cables? Just because the cable looks okay, doesn't mean it isn't internally damaged. High-end audio stuff
( and this is coming from 25 years of music biz experience), is very sensitve to the integrity of the cables used. As a matter of fact, my Onkyo does exhibit a hum with FM, and it's cause of a crappy coax from my outdoor antenna. This I know to be fact.
I am not saying there haven't been any problms on ONKYO's
end, but I want to caution you as to first blaming the reciever for any nasty noises you may experience out of it when you first hook it up. Just how old are your interconnects? Have they been pinched or damaged in any way? Okay, the old stuff sounded fine before-great! But your old reciever may have masked some of these flaws, whereas the Onkyo will MAGNIFY them. Especially if you are "stepping up" in audio quality, from your previous sys.
I would suggest when upgrading a system, epecially where your old one is 10 or years older; to buy all new cables. This way you start fresh. Moving, redecorating, spring cleaning, etc, all give the cables an opportunity to be damaged, pinched, etc., and just because the cable looks good, means absolutely nothing about the condition of the conductors on the inside.
Hope this helps! Happy listening!

Strength:

great sound quality, 5 ch stereo is amazing, remote control, price

Weakness:

none at all

i actually was going to buy the avr 3300 at 800 dollars but im glad i didnt. in almost all senses, the 777 and the 3300 are exactly the same, except onkyo's remote is much better, and its interface is much easier to use. it also has thx certification which is always a plus. I am using energy e:xl 28p, an audiosource 15 inch 200 watt sub, and energy e:xl c center channel, and boston acoustics rears. the sound is unbelievable, my old jvc 778 would overload at higher volumes, but not this baby, at a volume of 70/100 the receiver is cold to touch. its absolutely amazing, also, if u do decide to get this recevier, i recommend buying it from www.bestpriceaudiovideo.com, i got mine refurbished for 650 dollars, no cosmetic defects, and no hiss whatsoever. this is a great buy, and if ur deciding between the 3300 and the 777, go for the 777.

Strength:

Wonderful build quality

Weakness:

"Learning remote"
Shoddy Manual

First and foremost, no hiss, hum, sizzle, or crackle coming out of this unit. (Sounds to me like the guy in the earlier post was eating rice krispies when he was watching his movie :-)
The receiver is a wonderful piece of machinery! The sound is crystal clear in digital video format, but the audio I must say could be better.
I hear all about the Denon 3600 dts, but let me tell you that for the money there is no way I would buy the denon over my 777. Even if they were the same price!
Onkyo has struck gold once again!!!!!!!!

Strength:

accurate sound, features you actually need! (concept) THX is
cute. build quality is awesome, reciever is a rock. 6 ohm certification sets your heart at rest running speakers AB simultaneously.

Weakness:

tad dry on 2-channel stereo, but aren't all recievers?
he'll it's clean and I bi-wired the fronts and it widened the sound stage, with a good sub this weakness was easily overcome. annoying hum in center channel out of box

I did note a slight hum in the center, disappointing yes
but good wire and interconects along with an optional power
conditioner will make it disappear.

power is very clean. it is perhaps not as lively and rich
of sound as a Harman/Kardon unit but features and design fit
my needs better.

paired with a pair of speakers to compliment this will be
one of the BEST recievers YOU can BUY!!!

build quality is exceptional, it feels like you get what you
paid for, not a cheap unit. the japanese did this one right.

Strength:

Power, features and amount of ins and outs. Great remote once you learn to use it.

Weakness:

An audible hiss/hum in center channel.

I recently purchased a new Onkyo TX-DS777.I had anticipated nothing but good stuff to come from such a costly receiver. I did do my homework before the purchase and also did see the reviews many others have shared.(incl. Onkyo usa) I want to say the reciever is nothing short of a power house. The availiable hook ups on back and options this unit has are second to none. A truely first class reciever in many respects. But when playing any mode which requires the center channel I hear the dreeded hiss/hum (coming only from the c-channel). I tried everything to insure it wasn't anything I could have done relative to setup. I didn't want to face it but. Process of elimination pointed to my new receiver. I can't believe it! THX certified WHAT? Lucas couldn't have pass this? A simple quality check could have saved me trouble and Onkyo FACE! OH and my serial number starts with 39700 which is suposed to be out side the recall serial window. Go figure! Depsite all this I will return it for a new one and try once more. My rating is loud but not nearly as loud as the hiss/hum coming from my THX certified receiver's center channel! 2 stars

Strength:

Great Power, Great Sound, THX Certification, Great Remote

Weakness:

Manual could be clearer for the average or non audio enthusiast

I just recently purchased this receiver. I was really impressed with all the features that this receiver has to offer: THX select certification, DTS and AC-3 decoder, 105x5 watts, 26 DSP modes, fantastic remote, S-Video, and optical out, and a great powerful soud.

This has been a major upgrade from my older Yamaha RX-V1050
receiver. I hope to enjoy many years of great surround and listening with this new receiver.

Strength:

Solid, high-current amplification, low-impedance capabilities, great features and a mulitbrand learning remote that works...and don't forget the THX certification!!

Weakness:

Absolutely none, except for the ratings on this site

As a person experienced in electronics (I work in the industry), I have seen and demonstrated many products. I only purchased this receiver after much research and comparisons. The settings on this baby work wonderfully, especially movies on THX cinema, and 5-channel stereo for music is great! I would recommend this receiver to anyone.
Your speakers will love you for this solid diet of full-bandwidth, high-current power....

And of course, the learning remote was easy to program, and controls all the functions for my components with ease. Highly recommended.

Strength:

Too many strengths to fully list. The most important advantage of this receiver over a slightly cheaper model is that Onkyo has an amp for each channel (which is one reason why their receivers are so heavy). This means that when they say you get 105 watts per channel, you actually get all 105 watts for each channel. When a lower end stereo says you get 105 watts, that's actually what you get if you turn all the channels off but one and crank it. When runnign all channels you get about 70 watts or so. Conclusion: MORE POWER! This doesn't just mean louder, this means crisper and clearer sound with stronger bass.
...and if that much power isn't enough, this receiver has pre-amps for every channel. This means you can add amps later on for more power using the same receiver.
The 777 is THX Select Certified by Lucas Arts to produce excellent sound at even the lowest volume. The remote is better than the many All-In-One remotes I've collected over the years. This model has the on-screen configuration that lower models do not as well as Intelli-Volume which lets you balance each input level (ie. make your CD player the same volume as your VCR so you don't have to constantly adjust your volume when changing sources). My roomate is EXTREMELY jeleous since he's got the TX DS-575.

Weakness:

Can't use headphones in multi-channel input. It's odd, but I guess it makes sense. You're probably only going to use multi-channel for dolby and such which woudln't work well over headphones.

All around the best receiver you can buy IMHO. You can get these mail order for under $600 and you're getting a $1200 receiver with all the bells and whistles (unless you need dual room...then you're in the high dollars *grin*)

Strength:

Gobs of power, nice sound on music as well as HT, great learning remote (backlit), plenty of various inputs and outputs, ALL the bells and whistles

Weakness:

None as of yet.

First let me say that, No, I have never heard the slightest bit of hiss or hum out of this machine. As a matter of fact, this is the second one I've had, and neither displayed any of this (the first receiver was returned due to MY error, no fault of the product). RTFM!!
Having said that, I am very pleased with the performance and features of this unit. The power just keeps on coming if you want it to. The quality of the sound is very good also. I am bypassing the dacs in my cd player and using the 777s dacs, and this sounds MUCH better than using the CDP itself. I really like the 5 channel stereo mode for music listening. The DD 5.1 performance is awesome. Make sure all pictures and wall hangings are properly secured. I have this thing running 2 Paradigm Ref 60 v.2 fronts, reference cc center, and a pair of Boston acoustic bookshelfs for rears at this point, and the walls shake in movies. I can't wait to see what this will do with a sub.
The remote is great also. I have replaced remotes for my TV, VCR, CDP, DVD, and TV with this bad boy. What a relief!! It also lights up for use in the darkness, a key feature.

All in all, I am very happy with this purchase. The same goes for the Paradigm reference speakers, BTW.

Strength:

Power, sound is crisp, all the inputs you could possibly want.

Weakness:

The remote has way too many buttons, and the on-screen programming is a little cumbersome, but who spends hours in that anyway.

I was able to find this awesome unit at Crutchfield with a tiny little scratch on the BACK of it that saved me about $200. You can't go wrong with this baby! I use it primarily for movies. I've got it hooked to a six piece POLK RM6600 system. The surround effects are perfection, the highs are ear tingling, and the bass knocks you in the nuts, (in a nice way though :> ). If you can still find one of these (they've gone to the 787 now), get one.
