Onkyo TX DS696 A/V Receivers

Onkyo TX DS696 A/V Receivers

DESCRIPTION

This premium quality powerhouse might seem expensive - until you find out what's inside. It's endowed with a host of audiophile-pleasing features not found on many receivers, such as a high-end, equal power amplifier design, heavy-gauge internal wiring and bus bars, a thick copper absolute-ground plate that links the power supply to the output devices to provide extremely low ground impedance and higher instantaneous current capability, and the precision-engineered Optimum Gain Volume circuit that delivers an improved signal-to-noise ratio and better dynamic response. The TX-DS696 also gives you professional-quality component video switching, which, unlike many other component-video switches, has enough bandwidth to handle HDTV and progressive signals without losing image quality. Other rare features are Dolby Pro Logic II for quasi-5.1-channel sound from your stereo music recordings & Dolby Surround-encoded movie soundtracks, composite to S-video conversion to simplify video connection, A-Form to remember your source-mode settings, and powered Zone-2 capability - so you don't need an external amplifier to enjoy a different stereo source in another room. Top it off with a powerful backlit preprogrammed/learning remote, and you've got a centerpiece that's clearly a cut - or two - above all others in this category.

Strength:

The user interface cetainly enough the best I've seen, solid built and elegantly contoured, huge continuous high current power, delivers true 100W RMS, smooth velvet sound with an extraordinarily precision for thunderous volumes.

Weakness:

The bass is only boosted 6db at 50Hz regular for me, not so for bass lovers. Tuner preset inconvenience, if you power down with the master button presets will re-set to only 30. Will have to reprogram again.

Finally Onkyo blended in one piece all of it's knowledge and well acclaimed technologies and designs. This is a masterpiece of electronics, bulky enough to satisfy your worries about light units, massive in the audio capacity and extraordinarily accurate in the digital. I am an engineer in electronics and can't be convinced so easy but this is an exception. I know it's a hard task to buy a unit having all sorts of options, but, look no more this is the one.
- The best all around construction compared only to high scale Marantz'
- Intelligent interface, easy to use controls and huge display
- The best clean and undistorted mids and highs ever heard before, just neat!
- This unit has mamooth muscle power, I tested it and I am sure it delivers total 100W RMS
- The most usefull softwares for audio and video, Dolby Pro II is wonderful that's a real stepup in technology.

I recommend to you this brilliant and bold unit certainly THE BEST under $900.00. Matches extremely well with RT25i's from Polk in a Sub/Sat config. And it's the perfect blend if matched with Klisch's Synergy SF-2 Towers, SC-1 Center & SS-1 Sats.

Strength:

Sound, DPLII, Remote, Connectivity options, Component Switching, BASS response, On Screen Display, Late night mode

Weakness:

No way to use standard DPL to compare the difference! No THX (but for the price who cares!). Gets a little warm.

Price is in AUS$. What a receiver. I was about to buy a Denon 2801 and then I heard about DPLII. Amazing stuff. Enhances TV shows and old VHS movies huge amounts. Absolutely love this receiver. The power is perfect. As is the sound. The back-lit learning remote does the job perfectly and is SO MUCH better then the *&^(& Denon ones.

Weakness:

None at this price point

I got this on a CC website goof. It didn't last for long! Even at full price, you are getting quite a bit of flexibility and long term value. One thing I haven't heard anyone here mention is the Pre Outs. Very important if you ever want to utilize seperate power amps or even hook up a quasi Dolby Digital EX system.
The on screen display is very easy to navigate and quite intuitive. The remote is one awesome tool! The backlighting is invaluable - you don't what you are missing until you have it. I wouldn't go without it again. You can program it to do almost anything that has an IR sensor. The Manual is well laid out and answers almost any basic questions that you can have as a new user.
For more advanced users, I highly recommend AVIA Guide To Home Theater or Video Essentials to tweak your whole system, but particularly to balance your speakers and get them even to reference levels. To spend more than $300 on your home theater and NOT have one of these discs is purely a sin and one should be thoroughly flogged :) Seriously , though - pick up AVIA when you bring home your disc. I also recommend bringing home banana plugs for all of your outputs on the back as well. You will thank me later when the wife makes you move the reciever or speakers for the tenth time.
I can't say enough about my reciever. I had contemplated swapping it for the 797, but I'm just too happy with it to consider. The movie playback is flawless and extremely detailed. I've really begun to love DTS and normally prefer it on this unit. The clarity, or lack of distortion, is awesome and the high level detail comes out with every nuance - think of the shell casing from The Matrix each making their own noise and resonance and actually being able to hear it.
My recommendation is to always listen to what you want before you buy, as I did on this, but take my word on one thing - if you like the sound in a demo, you'll love the usability and long term value when it's permanently in your house.
