Weakness:

Hum in center and subwoofer channel

I got my receiver three days ago, and i spend all weekend in front for it. The sound quality is very good for a product in this pricerange. The build quality is amasing, and the remote is ok.

The bad thing about it is the humming in the center and subewoofer channel at all volumes but 0. The humming gets worse when the TV is turned on. If anybody has a solution to the problem please mail me at rej@kom.auc.dk

If there is no solution to the problem im going to have to return the receiver, and I would hate that, because except for the hum I love the receiver. As for the hiss that has been mentioned, on my receiver there are hiss but so little that I can only hear it with the ear right by the speaker.

awesome sound quality, solid bass, cool looks, big daddy remote

wish i could have one upstairs as well

This is simply one othe best receivers for the money. I've been in the business of selling audio equipment for seven years and I have to say that Onkyo is one of the best product lines I've ever had dealings with. I have Sound Dynamics speakers all around and this thing makes them rock! I have a dvps7000 sony dvd, a 36890 JVC tv, Proscan PSVR75 vcr, sony md recorder and the Onkyo remote works all of it!

Amazing powerful and dynamic sound in stereo

I recently upgraded my onkyo 575 to the 676. I use monitor silver 9i speakers , and they really rock with this recirver (yet the 575 doesnt really tickle them) . The 5 ch. stereo is hypnotizing although it loses the focal point of the sound. In stero mode i compared this reciever with dedicated amlifiers which cost twice the price but they dont sound dramatically much better.
there is no hiss at all! (unless you turn the volume to maximum and stick youre ear to one of the speakers!)

just hooked up surround speakers in the last month...and yes i quickly found out i had one of the dreaded 99 model
hisser's.After calling onkyo they told me that i would have to take it to my local repair center for "the fix"
Ofcourse i was not happy with this,i wanted a replacement.
called circuit city and told them about the whole recall story--onkyo has admitted there was a problem with the 99
models--there solution was bring it in for repair
i really don't see why i have to inconveniance myself
wait two weeks then get my receiver back and hope that it was repaired to my satisfaction. For a problem that onkyo was and is aware of!!!!!
i really like the 676...it rocks..but when i'm watching braveheart on dvd and during the dialogue i can hear hiss from 10 - 12 feet away it makes you concentrate on the hiss,
not the way to watch a movie
i made the mistake of not setting up my whole system right away....then i could have exchanged this receiver for the 2000 model, but i couldn't afford the speakers altogether
well..tommorow i take it to have the groundloop put in ...
i just hope it does the job...

Strength:

I absolutely love the sound that comes out of this unit! It made my 20+ year old Jamo speakers sound brand new. I also love the substantial inouts and outputs available on the back. Manual could have been clearer regarding proper AV connections - ended up relying on Monster Cable's web site for the proper wiring reference.

Weakness:

I've been told that the Onkyo unit doesn't work well with Klipsch speakers.

Excellent!

Weakness:

Bass a little bit week

The unit was delivered with a loud opperating noise that needed to be fixed. The Problem was not with Onkyo, but with the company I bought it through. U-BID SUCKS, I bought a total of 3 recievers from them and everyone was delivered defective. The first two reciviers were the Newcastle R945, and I was actually happy they were deffective because they sucked. The Onkyo TX DS676 is a great machine. The unit noise was just because there was a loose board, probably because all of the shipping it went through. If your looking to buy this unit there is no better one out there on the market. If your looking to buy from U-Bid, you'll probably get a killer deal, but expect to get the unit serviced when you get it because they sell alot of defective products.

PS, if your looking at this product and are wondering why it is such a high price for the wattage REMEMBER this is high current power, not that big brand (IE SONY, KENWOOD) power ratings. Big brands are scandalous with there power ratings. Ever wonder why the $200 Sony reciever has the same wattage as the $1000 dollar one!!!!

Weakness:

Hiss, Subwoofer bleed through in stereo when "B" speakers only are selected.

Bought it in late 99, got it home, hooked it up and was absolutely elated at the quality of sound this unit produced. Like a dummy I checked this review board after I had bought it. I read all the horror stories about the center channel hiss. Naturally I was curious if it was doing it and I had not noticed. I selected the surround mode, selected DVD (with no DVD in) and listened, no hiss, I turned the volume up, no hiss, I turned it to max, no hiss. I repeated the same process with 5 channel stereo with CD selected (no CD playing) same results. It was so clean. I was so relieved.

3 months later the infamous hiss began. I could hear it from 9 feet away. Adjustment of volume did not increase or decrease the hiss, there was also a slight hiss from the other channels. Before returning to HH Gregg for support I did the following in order to isolate the receiver to make sure some other component was not causing the problem, I disconnected and unplugged the TV, CD, VCR, DVD, subwoofer, security camera and turned all other breakers off in the house. I even ran a dedicated ciruit, checking the polarity to be certain there were no problems. All to no avail.

I returned to HH Gregg, explained all that I had done and wanted to see if they would just replace it, "NO", that was not store policy. I was able to show that I had purchased from them in the last 6 months, the Onkyo, a 200 CD player. center channel speaker, subwoofer, VCR, DVD, 36" TV, 25" TV, and a top of the line Microwave. I wanted to avoid the estimated 5 week turn around. I was a good customer. I was told that it didn't matter if I spent a $100 or a million, policy was policy unless of course I had purchased their extended service plan. I did not even get an apology for my trouble.

Anyway, with no choice I sent it in for repair, 5 weeks later it was returned. Set it up, the hiss is diminished but it also increases with volume. I can now hear it only from 4 feet away at 25% volume. Also it now has the subwoofer bleed over when my deck speakers (the "B"s) are the only speakers selected. Kind of distracting if someone is trying to read in the living room. Also without question the quality of sound is not as bright.

I contacted Onkyo direct this time by email, on a Sat., got a response on that Sun., on a holiday weekend. this was promising. I spoke to Don in parts, he seemed interested in my problem but suggested the initial repair should have greatly diminished the hiss. It did, but I am looking for zero hiss as the unit initially provided. Anyway he arranged for UPS to pick it up and it has been gone for 3 weeks. I don't believe they will solve this problem to my satisfaction. If they do, despite the problems, I will rate this unit at 5, which it deserves. If not considering the cost of $750.00 I'll rate it at 2.5. I am a service manager and believe if you stand behind your product and correct it to your customer's satisfaction that warrants high praise. By the way I will never ever buy from HH Gregg again. I guess Reba doesn't have problems with her equipment. I have already diverted several friends to purchase from Circuit City and that will be my life long mission. Finally, I just received a mailing from HH Gregg stating that I am a preferred customer inviting me to a sale.....give me a break.

Strength:

Clarity, musical ambience, 145W per channel power, value,Universal remote,OSD system config,DTS reproduction

Weakness:

Unit has a very deep body which is too big for some cabinets

The previous problems of centre channel humming / noise has been DEFINITELY fixed. Any distortion noise will occur only if people set their channel level too high when setting up the system using the test tones (i.e. those who don't know how to follow clear instructions). Onkyo has also confirmed that there was a problem with TV interference and earthing. All 2000 models no longer has that problem.
I have watched Matrix DVD with the 676, the sound reproduction was better than at the cinemas. My system has a front pair of MS207, Center Wharfedale Modus, JamoSW1008 sub and Aiwa virtual surround speakers.
Customer service with Onkyo Australia was responsive and outstanding. I think those complaining about service at the US was a localised problem.
